Dark Chronos
So is the difference between the icx and ACX3.0 the inclusion of thermal pads or what lol?

edit - the backplate looks thicker, but I can't spot any other differences

The backplate is also much more attractive with the "Lucas Arts" style slots.

Hmmm, very interesting indeed.
Not sure I am too happy with this, dropping a bunch of money on my 1080 FTW just a few months ago.

First was the vrm cooling/thermal pad issue, which I decided I would just live with as I have advanced RMA option if needed. Now this redesigned/better cooled FTW, perhaps a result of this issue.

Unless a free RMA is offered this will unfortunately be my last EVGA product ever.

I've been on board with these guys for quite some time now and after the whole cooling fiasco this has just left an even saltier bitter taste in my mouth.

Clearly the cards cooling design needed some tweaking and this is a perfect example. It's obvious the back plate has been redesigned to dissipate more heat and I wouldn't be surprised if the HS has either had a cold plate added or tweaked slightly.

Even if the changes are purely cosmetic I now have the "old" version of the card because I was a loyal customer a jumped on board early.

Being in Australia the warranty doesn't mean anything to me, it costs me upwards of $70 to send the card back to Taiwan. I'd rather give my hard earned dollars to another vendor who also offers local warranty and doesn't shaft their customers over and over with the excuse that everythings "optional".

I can appreciate that some of you now think that your FTW is outdated.

Just remember a little piece of advice from me - keeping up with the Jones's is a great recipe for winding up broke and with maxed out credit. You won't really be happy, and there will always be newer, marginally better things to get for the rest of your life.

Take it from me - Try to be grateful for what you have, you will feel much better.

If that's the case where are the inlets and outlets for the water? I can't see any unless they are on the back of the card which would make absolutely no sense at all for multiple reasons.

it would render the powerlink devices useless I'd assume and having barbs+hoses on the rear of the card would only introduce space issue.

I also can't see any pipes running from the middle of the card towards the back in any of those pics or a hint of what you are suggesting.

I surely hope you are right I honestly do and if you have any further info or links it'd be nice if you could share them.

Because atm with all the BS that happened previously you'd think EVGA would have learnt about keeping things behind doors, especially when it suggests a simple tweaking of and already released GPU.

Again I surely hope you are right.

Doubt it can beat water cooling so just put a water block on your ftw and be happy.

Yes I think they should of waited for the next round of nvidia cards then no one would of been upset.

Interesting, I wonder if this is just the inclusion of the Thermal Mod with a fancy new name and the "piece of mind" slogan to reassure new buyers that they're not getting an old FTW or whether that's a more substantial redesign of the cooler.

If the former, smart PR. If the latter, I can't help but feel a bit miffed after with the "it's perfectly safe but our new product is safer!" message combined with the extra fan noise from the BIOS update. But we don't know yet.

Waiting for people to get a good look at the iCX at CES, that will hopefully clear it up.

I already have a custom loop. But for those who don't what you are suggesting is a costly exercise.

GPU block - ~$130AU
Pump - ~$100AU
Radiator - ~$100AU
Reservoir - ~$60AU

Give or take a few dollars depending on your location but the initial outlay for a loop isn't cheap.

I blasted everyone here because I thought this was one those water block cards with fans attached to it like Asus has done previously. You know the thing where you can do water cooling or air cooling on the same GPU but excels at neither. People asking for a free upgrade to that was ridiculous i'd be like asking for a free hybrid or hydro copper kit but this really does just look like a FTW v 2.0 so now I can see where the uproar is coming from. I was looking from my cell phone so I thought the power link was the inlets/outlets for the block portion.

I believe ICX is the disassociation from the disaster that was ACX 3.0.

Anyway, glad I went with ASUS. First I avoided the problem, then I avoided the increased fan speed and noise, followed by the DIY solution and now...I avoided the resentment.

If all this does is address the Thermal Pad debacle, then I don't care. I think that whole thing was way overblown anyway. I'm happy with how my card runs.

I think you've missed the point. I tend to resell my cards to I can upgrade. Now, potential buyers will be put off by the older design and issues. I could care less since the card is properly cooled on my end and works as fine. It's none of your business what people do with their money and you should not concerned yourself with it.

+1...

Also, adding to this, every piece of hardware you buy is outdated the day you bought it as something newer and better is right around the corner...

Makes me wonder, one would think EVGA had this cooler refresh in design faze or planned when we all received the MASKING VULGAR LANGUAGE IS NOT ALLOWED PER FORUM TERMS OF SERVICE. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM POSTING ANY VULGAR LANGUAGE, MASKED VULGAR LANGUAGE, OR ABBREVIATION OF VULGAR LANGUAGE. THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING AND ABIDING BY THE TERMS OF SERVICE thermal pad fix.

If nothing was wrong with the cards as EVGA have stated all along (only during extreme circumstances), why didn't they be upfront and say "look guys we've got a refresh design on the way hold tight and you can RMA your older cards for the new ones being released". Instead of shafting everyone with the easy way out via thermal pads then stiffing them again with a FTW2!

I'm sure 99% of us would have been more than happy to wait knowing a better designed cooler was coming to us along with a new or refurbished card via RMA.

Guess it's time to sell this before the refresh comes out and hold tight for the Ti series. And I can assure you I wont be sporting the EVGA brand.

Re: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 with iCX cooling !?!?!? 2017/01/06 07:46:01 (permalink)
I bought my 1080 FTW back in July.  It was approved for advanced RMA due to all the issues with no thermal pads, old bios, constant black screens ,etc.

I got my replacement a month or so ago with the thermal pads, bios updated, the black screen *mostly* gone, but I still get them occasionally along with a random complete computer shutdown in the middle of heavy gaming from time to time (something I never had before with my 970 SLI setup doing the exact same thing).  But the major annoying issue I'm having is the fans are full blast from the moment I load any game, and they are not all that quiet.

I'm not one to complain...but I did pay a slight premium back in July and I can say I'm not exactly satisfied with my purchase.  So I'm hoping there will be some sort of program to allow us to replace our current cards with something else.  Pretty please, EVGA?

Agreed. I was gearing up to do a full EVGA build too. EVGA case, motherboard, GPUs, the works...
Now I'm going to consider Asus instead.

Stop crying and pick up a Hybrid kit or a full blown waterblock. Pascal belongs under water anyway.

So after the 970FTW which got a FTW2 version, we now get the same for the 1080FTW. Seems like one is well advised to not buy an EVGA card near launch.

If one wants the best product for the cheapest price, one is not advised to buy any computer hardware of any type or brand near launch.

Had anyone ever bought a motherboard and then later had a new motherboard come out with better features and updates that people asked for? If you have, then this is the same exact thing. People wanted changes, and EVGA is providing them.

Rather than consistently assuming that EVGA is trying to break your trust, why don't you:

1) wait for details

2) stop assuming that we have answers that have not been even remotely addressed.

I've never purchased a motherboard where I had to apply my own apparent "optional" fix only to find out a refresh was released addressing the same issues. No no I haven't.

the new 1080 ftw versions that shipped after november 1st were an updated reversion that included the pads and bios applied. my very own bought brand new from amazon on november 27th came with the pads and bios already applied. i'm really ticked that they are releasing this icx and claiming "game with safety and peace of mind" when the whole bloody reason i waited to buy a 1080 ftw was to wait for the updated reversions from november 1st. which i got because evga SAID this was the fix for safety and peace of mind. i thought that was the end of it but now this???? really evga???

edit:
i also have to say, the slogan "game with safety and peace of mind" for the icx has to be one of the WORST slogans to market after the whole debacle. are you guys implying the pads and bios fix wasn't enough???
