HAF-X cases are amazing. With my upcoming build, I don't plan on switching it out. The only thing that might tempt me is a sound dampening case, but those make for hit and miss heat solutions.

the only thing that drives me nuts is the back panel is slightly bowed out so when I go to screw in the video card for instance I have to pull on it a bit to get the holes to line up.  Maybe I should should try to bend it a bit.  On my previous build I had in it, the panel was so off on the lower slots where I had some cards that I literally used a zip tied through there to hold down the card instead of a screw because I didn't want the bowing panel to put too much stress on the card/socket connection or risk it causing the card to creep out and short.

Get the coolermaster Mastercase 5. It's a complete beast and has all of the newest features. Probably one of the best full height cases ever made imo.

I'm confused, CM lists it as a mid tower not a full tower?

I like Corsair cases. I have a 780T Corsair case.

I like Corsair as well. Traded in my HAF-X case for the obsidian 900d. The more space for me the better. Plus couldnt find anywhere to mount two hybrid rads with an aio cpu cooler mounted up top in the HAF-X. Loved that case for my previous setup tho its a great case.

If you really like it, chose the next version of the HAF. I personally grew tired of the HAF case, they are often too loud because of the airflow and the lack of noise dampener.

Ok necro'ing my own thread.  I'm looking again at potentially replacing my HAF-X still.  Was thinking maybe one of the EVGA cases but that was just a random though.  Anyway the reason is I just built a new L shaped corner desk for my office and I want to get the PC off the floor and into the back corner or similar on the desk.  The HAF with the PSU on the bottom is always sucking dust into that filter.  I know that will be improved getting it up on the desk but I wonder if it will be too big on the desk.  The only requirements really are good airflow (ACX3.0 cooled 1070) and room for a Noctua NH-D14 cooler which as you probably know is massive and tall.  Room for modest water cooling in the future would be nice though in case I ever go that route.  Front panel audio is no longer a must because I could just route my mic to the rear input on the motherboard, my headphones now use a USB DAC, but I do need at least 3-4 USB ports.

Wow nice, I hadn't thought about a cube before.  That's also attractive with the horizontal mobo mounting.  No more motherboard stress from the massive cooler hanging on it in a vertical config.  Price seems right too.  Is the tempered glass version worth it?

Anyone have an opinon on the Corsair carbide 540 or 740?  The 540 is interesting to me cause it keeps in the external drive bay for use with my DVD writer, but then it's put vertical (the thermaltake cube cases have them too but they're the traditional horizontal).

Revisiting this a bit.  I've narrowed down things a bit.  Looking for some feedback on the following.  I'm going to be using it more for a new build but if I get the case first I may move the current stuff into it as well.  I realize many of these I'll lose the external bay but I'll just adjust and get an external DVD-RW.  These are listed in my current preference.  For the new build I'm planning on ditching the Noctua NH-D14 I've been using since 2010 and going either AIO or custom water this time.

Re: what to replace a HAF-X with? 2019/01/18 10:33:25 (permalink)
I'm in a similar situation. I'd like to replace my HAF X with something with better cable management and SSD support with more modern design, but I've found that there really isn't anything that's substantially better. When it comes to GPU cooling on air, that gigantic 200mm side panel fan does wonders for your GPU. Even more if you're like me and have 2 1080 Ti's with fan on heatsink coolers (not blower/liquid). The bottom line is the removal of a side panel intake for cooling your GPU makes a measurable difference in cooling. With tempered glass being all the craze right now, you can't find new high end cases that have side panel fans.

You should check out this updated review GamersNexus did on the HAF X for 2018
EDIT: Looks like I can't post a link, but search GamersNexus HAF X 2018 and you'll find their written and video review.

It still holds as king for air cooled GPUs and one of the best for CPUs. I actually "modded" mine by drilling in mounts at the top for a 280mm radiator using the Corsair H115i AIO. It fits in perfectly with 4 fans in push/pull, plus I still have the space to keep one 200mm fan directly above the 5.25" bays as exhaust.

The sad thing is that Cooler Master has discontinued the HAF X as of a few months ago, and there's no word on if they're going to bring the series back. I've had my HAF X for almost 10 years now and unless I find a case that has better GPU (on air) cooling with similar features, I'm sticking with it.

Re: what to replace a HAF-X with? 2019/01/18 15:46:08 (permalink)
I like the Thor 2 MUCH better than my 2 HAF-X cases.
SO much more room, options, and the airflow is better.
The only thing I dont like is that it doesnt have wheels, and it is still taller than the HAF-X.
Other than that, probaly THE only case I will never ever get rid of. (I got my own fans for it, to make it better cfm airflow).

Oh, and those glass cases? I have one of those also, and in order to get good airflow I have had to remove the front glass and the top glass. Otherwise my 2080's (not even TI) overheated. They look awesome, but they cant dissipate enough heat with all the glass on them.

Another case I have been eyeing is that open air case by (TT is it?). That looks like a good case. But, even though its open, you STILL need fans in some places or you get overheating, and just sticking some fans on with double sided tape or something would look too funky.
So, thats why I said Thor 2.

CM MasterCase H500M

Is a nice case, I just finish a build in one of these for someone.
The stock exhaust 140 fan is Not RGB

It was hard to stuff a 360 AIO cooler in the top of the case.  I'd recommend the 280 AIO coolers

I used the RGB headers on the MB, not the ones that came with the case

I did not install the front glass & cooling was very good.  EVGA 1070Ti FTW2 mounted sideways on the Case mounts.*

* 1) The Case Does Not come with a Cable riser
* 2) The case's vertical mounting location is Not pushed back like the PCIe slots on back of case; this was a challenge making the riser cable work
* 3) used CM Vertical Graphics Card Holder Kit -- Only for the cable -- the included bracket would have fixed the step-back issue, however would have blocked  All PCIe covers on the rear of the case, Stopping you from using the other slots on the MB
* 4) The CM riser cable Does Not lock/ latch onto the video card's PCIe mount fingers --- I would look elsewhere for a riser cable with a latch
* 5) The Case's "Adjustable Graphics Card Support Arm" Does Not reach if you use the case's vertical mount position

I was able to OC the EVGA 1070 Ti FTW2 on the riser cable

EVGA 1000W PSU was a tight fit in this case. - case has that slanted front wall sealing the PSU compartment

Thanks for the info!  This is still one of the cases I've been considering.  It's been tough too because I actually like the looks of the Phanteks cases better, BUT the H500M having 4xUSB 3.x and a USB 3 C type on the front panel is really attractive.

Yeah I've really been eyeing that Lian Li O11 Dynamic.  My only problem is it seems like a good deal until you realize it comes with zero fans pre-installed so by the time you deal with that it bumps the price back up a bit.  I suspect I'm probably going to end up with an Evolv X depending on the actual size specs of the upcoming Luxe 2 from Phanteks (and its release date).

Still that H500M is really trying to tempt me by having almost twice the front panel USB ports of other stuff.  Most of what I'd plug in though is stuff that would be permanent so it would be better to just have a board with enough onboard ports instead.

If I go with the O11, I'm definitely forced into watercooling or a new CPU air cooler because it has that raised motherboard tray area that reduces the height of the CPU coolers you can use.  It can't use the big stuff like the Noctua D14 I have.  I'm probably going with a loop kit from modmymods though.  Not an AIO but a kit that comes with the rad, block, res, etc. all the parts needed to build a custom loop.

Hmm good point I'll have to see what the motherboards I'm eyeing have.  Gigabyte Aorus Ultra, MSI Meg Ace, ASRock Taichi, or maybe a Maximus XI Hero but that's pushing the price range to features ratio vs the others.  Not sure if I updated this thread properly but at this point I'm basically looking to replace the HAF-X with a new case for a new build and keep remaining parts in the HAF-X as a second PC for a fileserver or something.  Depending on timing I could still move the current parts into it but that also depends on being able to keep using my Noctua D14 if I do, and the Lian Li case definitely won't allow that.  I think I'm good on the rest though.

Almost forgot, that build above you mentioned that an AIO 360 you didn't think would fit the H500M on top, what about a standalone rad like this?  https://modmymods.com/alphacool-nexxxos-xt45-full-copper-360mm-radiator-14166.html  I think it's part of one of the kits I was thinking about (though I'm probably doing the 280 kit instead).

The customer wanted a Cooler Master ML360R RGB

I did shoehorn that puppy into the case

I put the fans on the outside (on top) of the case to improve clearance inside the case with the I/O & RAM

Huh, interesting cause CM says it's supposed to support a 360 in front and up top.  That cooler the radiator looks similar in shape to the others I've seen, and it's only like 30mm vs I'm looking at 45's.  The fans aren't that thick either.

Lian Li makes some GOOD cases.

Seriously dude, THE best case I have ever owned.
And, I have owned everything except a mountainmods case.

The O11 from Lian Li or one of the others I was mentioning?

Well, no, I havent owned the Lian Li.
But looking at it, it doesnt seem to be able to do triple radiators, and wasnt that one of the things you wanted to do?
Also, you can do a single rad out the back, there is enough room.
Heck, you could even mod the front and side panel to accept any water cooling you want.
But, like I said, it is BIG. But, its nice to be able to build in a case you dont have to contort your body, hands, fingers, etc just to get 1 screw in.
Good luck with your build.

Oh I guess I'm confused, up above you replied that it was the best case you'd ever owned.  Hmm no I wasn't planning on doing triple radiators unless you mean a 360 i.e. triple fan.  My understanding on the O11 though is it actually can fit triple rads if someone want.  Side, top, bottom. Yeah I just double checked their site specifically calls out 3x360mm rads being possible.  No idea why someone would need that unless they're trying to build a super silent rig though using low rpm fans.  I think at this point it's down to......
