Try renaming the BIOS file to EVGAE690.bin and try again.

Gumby88 I updated my sig for you Bee_Dee_3_Dee hope that helps solve my issue.
cool ty The problem your having is: "Can't complete Flashing the BIOS Without a CPU". Now that u have a proper Sig with the Hardware ur using and ^^ problem description; it should be easier for others to also chime-in/contribute to this thread and help solve ur prob. Starting point for a solution is always, information. Even though your Sig seems fine now, for all to see, let's be certain. k so, if we open the manual... Manual for EVGA Z690 DARK K|NGP|N (121-AL-E699) (URL to it is at: https://www.evga.com/support/manuals/) and if we search in the PDF for "flash the BIOS without picture", the 1st page we're taken to is, Page -147-. On Page -147-, we see two pics. The Pic of the BIOS UPDATE port that is directly on the Motherboard can also be seen in the Pic on Page -10-, towards the upper right --- it can also bee seen on Page -14-. So obviously ur using the correct USB port. Just remember the Pic shows: "BIOS Update" above it. But on Page 141, it is referred to as: the "USB 2.0 to SPI header". And the the Component Legend on Page 14 (entry 31) calls it: "USB to SPI for BIOS Flash". So the USB "BIOS Update" port, the "USB 2.0 to SPI header", and "USB to SPI for BIOS Flash", are all three the same thing. lol i noticed all the ^^ last February when i bought my Classified z690. I read every page of the manual three times before opening the Motherboard's box. So enough blah blah blah... sry Gumby88! But it also says in table of contents on Page 40, under Internal Headers: "USB to SPI Header (for flashing BIOS)". omg! Sry again, but "SPI" doesn't ring a bell. OK cool... Wikipedia says... " Serial Peripheral Interface". And that make total sense. I kind of like "USB to SPI Header (for flashing BIOS)" now. Go ahead and change 2nd line in ur Sig from: non working bios (attempted 2.03 using USB port for bios update) TO: Non-working BIOS: v2.03 using the "USB to SPI Header (for flashing BIOS)" That way ^^ makes it clear to anyone reading ur Sig, that ur using the correct port. Back to ur problem Gumby88... 1. What all is connected to ur PC? Of course just the bare minimum is advisable -- even though, Page 147, is talking about a problem different then urs, it still does apply. It's an example of a PC that used to work just fine, but it's no longer working properly. But the "no picture protocol" applies to ur problem too -- just with the exception of don't have things other than the bare minimum connected. Be sure only to have physically connected: a Video Card, a Keyboard and a mouse too if ur not used to getting around a BIOS' menu without a mouse.) I know from experience that having SSD's connected could possibly cause a problem with getting to see a picture displayed. And it could be hindering the completion of Flashing the BIOS Without a CPU. So don't have them connected. Edit: Oh, and we need to see ur Video Card's Brand/Make/and Model Number in ur Sig. That's important now and in the future because u have a "KF" CPU -- one without Onboard Video. And after you read this post, in addition to continuing here, calling EVGA's phone support may prove to be a very efficient way to cross all T's and dot all I's. We only need to find additional checks and make some additional attempts at the same protocol u have attempted. And hopefully the said checks will lead to something that had been overlooked and result in u successfully "Flashing the BIOS Without a CPU". GL

Really wanna thank you Bee_Dee_3_Dee for your help firstly. All that is connected now to the board is a keyboard, and the monitor. Inside the 3080Ti and my Ram nothing else. I did what was suggested and changed the bin file name (Bios v 2.03) to EVGAE690.bin as suggested above by EVGATech_LeeM. Did not work Post LED said 1.5 frozen didn't even try to cycle I then took out all SSds same exact result Post LED 1.5. Reformatted the supplied EVGA flash drive and change the name to EVGAE699.bin and the post LED began to cycle like it was working. Result ended with the post LED reporting 1.2 so still fail. I'm gonna have to do as you suggested "calling EVGA's phone support may prove to be a very efficient way to cross all T's and dot all I's" Just nothings working. Thanks again.

Gumby88 Ok thank you very much !
You said the POST cycled with the file named E690.bin. Did it seem like roughly 7 minutes or so? Just to check, are you holding down the BIOS Update button long enough? I'd hold it down for at least 10 seconds given the issues you're having. After, did you try installing the CPU?

Yeah, at this point you're going to need to install the CPU. It won't further POST without the CPU and everything else hooked up in the system.

E3 means the USB disk is not in FAT32 format.
Much appreciated Lee! The USB is already FAT32 but I'll re-format using the long method and try again. Edit: USB drive was incompatible with the BIOS Update port. Swapped it out with a different USB, good to go.

Thank you very much for looking into it for me, I feel better proceeding. Thanks for everyone's help on this. Hopefully the rest of the build goes smooth for me. np but TY! because I needed a new PC case -- because my current case isn't big enough for a 4090 -- turns out u have the one I picked while doing case research the past four days... the Lian LI Lancool III. Based on many Youtube vids, reviews, and articles, the Lian LI Lancool III rules for me. It's no wonder u installed so many SSDs... that was a prerequisite for me too. i have 7 of them in my current case -- i've used it ( Cooler Master HAF X (942)) for 11 years -- and i have 9 hot swap drive bays in it. So choosing the Lian LI Lancool III as my next case, was strongly influenced by being able to easily install/swap SSDs in it. Did you see Lian Li LAN2-3X Hot-swappable Back Plate? I'm going to get two of them after i confirm they also work with the Lian LI Lancool III. I'll call Lian LI, or use their online chat. Don't know if they have forum. Oh, I can also try and confirm by reading the reviews on Amazon or I bet NewEgg has them and their reviews would say. And because I like the wheels so much on my Cooler Master HAF X (942) case. (The case is on my desktop, and it's easy to work on by rolling it around on top of the desk when I need to.) Therefore, I'm also going to be getting, as a compliment, for the the Lian LI Lancool III case: Seloom Adjustable Stand with Rolling Caster wheels. Oh and i almost forgot. For over two years I've used: Sabrent USB 3.2 5-Bay (DAS -- Direct Access Storage). It is simply the best thing ever for managing HDDs. There's a 10-Bay version if u want to go nuts.lol But 5-Bays is awesome! For what it does, the 5-Bay's price is perfect. After all, it has 10,000 mbps speeds! Edit: And the least expensive 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter for the DAS: ORICO 2.5 SSD SATA to 3.5 Hard Drive Adapter. GL on ur software.

redcloudsk77 hello, i just got my evga z690 classified and waiting to get 13th gen cpu. im looking at the manual regarding bios update section (bios update without cpu) and the instruction #4 and #5 are not clear to me. /////4. When ready, flip your power supply switch to the “On” position and hold down the “BIOS UPDATE” BUTTON, which can be found on the I/O Panel.//// /////5. Continue holding down the reset key, as the POST LED counts down from 2. //// #4 says i need to hold down 'bios update button' and #5 says continue holding down the 'reset key' ----> it means the 'reset button' right next to 'bios update' button? so i am supposed to hold down 2 buttons at same time? or they just talking about the just 1 button which is 'bios update button'. this is so confusing.. someone plz help!!!!
#5 is a typo. Thanks for catching it. Reset should say the BIOS UPDATE button to be consistent with #4. Previously, the reset button (as in power and reset buttons) was used to trigger the CPU-less flash. Seems that it was missed while proofreading.
Please put this in a sticky so it is not so hard to find.

Hi guys, Please help me with same issue. I've purchased Z690 classified motherboard and intel core i5 13600k. I tried to perform bios flashback without CPU and every time I get error code E6 and cannot proceed (nor do I understand what this exact code means). I used the supplied usb stick with mobo. Downloaded the latest bios 2.06. Connected the PSU to mobo, renamed the bios file to EVGAE698.bin. Inserted the USB stick into dedicated port for bios flashback on mobo, pressed and hold "Bios Update" button until the LED starts to rotate clockwise and then I get E6 error code. Please help me with this issue. Thanks in advance!

Hi, you can try to install bios 2.03, as it worked for me first try on my less than 1 week old z690 classified. This is the link to the thread including the bios file.
If it works, you can install bios 2.06 from windows
I had to add a detail, that probably doesn't matter, but when I updated my bios, the cpu was installed with power included. Even though it didn't post at first try/test, it worked after updating. I did that because someone said that the bios recognized the 13th gen cpu, but still let it use the bios interface with an old bios.
Also, I only had the usb with the bios file connected to the MB, and power cord to PSU.
Best luck with the update!

You are a life real saver! It worked like a charm first time (even though I forgot to plug in CPU power ). I connected the CPU power, turned it on and it started to restart itself with different codes, I guessed it was searching for RAM, so I installed it and voila I entered the BIOS after next boot! Important to note that after bios flash (without CPU power) it showed code 11. I think it should be addressed with EVGA community and the BIOS 2.03 should be available for download with a note to use it for installation of 13th gen CPU. It was not mentioned anywhere. Thank you again for your lifesaving advice!

I am glad it worked for you :D, there's some details the manual needs to clarify that should be added, but for now the forum can be helpful in a lot of situations, have a nice day & best regards!

I agree with you. One small question (probably not the right thread). Which m.2 slot to use for boot drive? I assume that the top one of three shares lanes with CPU (13600k) ?

Acording to the manual, the top one should be the one that shares lanes directly with the CPU as you said.
This is info was copied from the manual
"M.2 Key-M (110mm, Top, M.2_1) – Gen4 x4 from CPU This slot supports PCIe M.2 SSDs / Intel® Optane. M.2 Key-M (110mm, Middle, M.2_2) – Gen4 x4 from Z690 PCH This slot supports PCIe M.2 SSDs / Intel® Optane M.2 Key-M (110mm, Bottom, M.2_3) – Gen4 x4 from Z690 PCH This slot supports PCIe M.2 SSDs / Intel® Optane M.2 Key-E (32mm) – Gen1 x1 from Z690 PCH This slot is pre-installed with the EVGA Wi-Fi/BT Module"
I hope this help you, I am using that top m.2 port for my nvme at the moment with nice performance.
Regards :)!

Thank you again for your guidance. The manual was a bit unclear for me as I thought I will loose PCI slot performance to x8 on my GPU if use top m.2 slot. Thanks again!

Gumby88 The POST did cycle with the file named EVGAE690.bin Yes I have had to hold it down for about 10 seconds yes. It did cycle for around 7 minutes too. Yes I did not try to install the CPU.
Hey, I have the same trouble. Same thing with 1.5 post code. Then I disassembled the finished build and put the mobo on the carton box and started experimenting with different versions of bios, different usb sticks and different hardware installed. And finally the 1.5 post went away! But then another problem appeared. When I tried to update bios with different file versions renamed to evgae699.bin e1 post appeared no matter what stick i was using. And when i read your posts and renamed to evgae690.bin it gave me e4 post code. Wanted to know what stick did u use and what bios version. And if anyone knows any information that can help I will appreciate it!

Guys, I’ve tried to flash all the ‘1, 2, 3’ with 2.01 2.02 2.03 2.04 2.05 and 2.06 naming both evgae699.bin and evgae690.bin. Evgae699.bin post e1, evgae690.bin post e4 after cycling. On the evgae690.bin after a few seconds of cycling there is always 3 flashes of power switch button on every version of bios before post. Nothing else happens. Second day after unboxing my brand new z690 Dark and no result.
- have 13700kf installed with a contact frame (didnt over torque, know about this issue) - 24pin connected - 2 cpu power connected - aio waterblock installed with pump control pluged in (incase the mb starts not to overheat the cpu)
Read all the related posts. Tried all the methods mentioned. Nothing.
I‘m so upset having this issue. Please help!

I’ve just found some useful information in the net. Luumi says that the 1st thing before flashing bios is to find a very old usb 2.0 stick so the system could recognise it (not to have e1 post).
Ok, I will try to find it, but i really don’t get it. How the hell it could be in 2023 on a board that is only 1 year after release needs an old usb drive to have success flashing the bios. This doesn’t make sense. What were they thinking (Evga engineers) making this special usb slot unable to recognise modern equipment. Can’t get this thing out of my head.
I’ve already tried 3 usb sticks including the one that was in the box. All formatted as fat32. Size downgraded to 1024 mb. And back to its normal size (8 and 16). The board doesn’t want to read it in any scenario.
What do you think? Does anyone checked this hypothesis?

I won this game.
The problem was the psu. It was brand new Phanteks Revolt Pro 1000w. Just took the 2 year old deepcool and everything went like it should be - nice and smooth. So, for everyone who the same issues - check ur psu too.
