Hmmm. I wonder if this has anything to do with the Ryzen 1700x being priced at the same amount

To be honest I would not give my CPU + 100$ for him now.
Because anyway my i7-5820K OC is closer to i7-5960X default than i7-6850K.

If I hit some bad sample result after OC could be very similar as mine now.
    I look more for i7-7820X and X299.
I have memory and I could afford one thing, motherboard or CPU for other thing I need to wait more.
I must beat 1800X as soon as possible, I can't sleep because he is faster than my CPU.
But I would like to beat him with same number of cores, because that's fair, or AMD fans could say Yes but you have 2 cores more.

Would this be a good upgrade from a 4770k? Or should I wait and grab the newest CPU deal?

I have to rebuild my entire rig soon but I want to wait for the GTX1100 (?) series.

I've got a 4790k and I'm content for quite awhile. If anything I MAY upgrade to threadripper if the performance is truly there.  To be honest there is very little need to upgrade from a 4770k to a 6850k considering its a dead chipset now at this point.

No, that would be upgrade but not so good upgrade compare to improvements on CPU market today.
You should wait to market settle down. That mean to Intel X299 platform mature and AMD to launch Threadripper.
They will influence on prices between self and prices of Ryzen 7.
Or you should wait 8th Gen. Now no more worries for 4 cores only and new information say premium model will be 15% faster than i7-7700K.
That's not much for owners of Z170 and Z270 but for people with previous chipset is importand information and good to know. Special if improvements is 15% per core. I doubt they think 6 cores vs 4 cores 15% improvement. That would be tragic.
But if improvement is per core Coffee Lake will be great compare to Kaby Lake because more cores will bring new far better multi threaded performace.
Dual Channel memory and 4 DIMMs only could be problem for very limited number of people and they choose completely different type of computers.
Improvements in memory benchmarks are not so visible in real work.
    Rumors say 3.5GHz to 4.2GHz Turbo. 6C/12T.
As processor that will be gaming beast, as platform ...???
I think Intel should seriously to think to prolongue time between two chipsets.
Customers will lose nothing if they wait 6-8 months more for some innovation, new controller or new Intels feature.
Intel 8th generation will outperform and all Intels Xtreme processors and all AMD's Ryzen and Threadripper models in gaming performance.
Only i7-7700K overclocked will be very close.

CPUs are usually a 4 year cycle for me anyway. Or complete rebuilds If I wait 5 years.

CPUs just don't get bottlenecked so easily, especially if I can get a new one in tandem with a new console generation. My first i7 was the 920 D0 step. Was great.

Upgraded to the 4770k after my 920 died. Either a dead PSU or dirty power I have no idea. I don't have many extra parts to benchtest. So I took the opportunity to just buy a new CPU/Mobo. Now I have money, and I kind of want to just upgrade for the heck of it. Next build is gonna be i7 8800k, GTX1180 TIs SLI, 64GB RAM,

    Itll be glorious.
