Hey everyone! It's been a long time since I built another computer. I have a new job and live back home in Dallas now! (Newegg NO TAX!!!) For the last year or so, I've been running a Sager notebook, but with new demanding titles likes Crysis 3 and M:LL, she's showing her age. First, I had to decide if I was going to buy another notebook or build a new desktop. It was an easy choice since 90% of my notebook's life was spent relaxing next to my computer desk. My previous desktop was a MASSIVE 800D (Can't even believe there's a 900D now lol) that was a pain to move around. So with that in mind, I first set out to find a case. It took me a week and a half to finally make my choice. First, I was set on the SilverStone Fortress FT03 Mini. I almost bought the Fractal Design Node 304, but I didn't like the fact that the front is plastic and not aluminum. It's also extremely cramped. As for the Prodigy, I looked at one in person and it looked great, but it's very common. I was just about to give up on my search for the perfect case and just buy a Corsair when a friend showed me the CaseLabs Mercury S3. Wow.. It's perfect. That's all there is to say about it. The price for one of these is between $199-$290. After looking at my friend's S3, it's worth it.

UPDATE 02.21.2014
I am migrating to the CaseLabs Mercury S5 mATX case in white. Once my remaining parts arrive, I'll try to post some really nice pics of the build process and finished look. One of my main goals this time around (after spending a lot of time sifting through other people's build logs) is to make it my own somehow and customize it in a unique way. One idea I have is to line the inside of the Classified's fans with red LEDs. I think it will turn out really nice.

Thanks man.. the waiting part is hard right now. Also, I feel kind of dumb. I completely forgot to look at EVGA's store for the 780. I paid 672.99 shipped for the SC version. :|

Since the chassis is mini-itx it should be interesting to see when completed.

Since the waiting is killing me.. here is a picture of what it could potentially look like when done. Did I mention this waiting is killing me?

Do y'all think EVGA might let me send in my unopened 780 SC for a 780 FTW/Classified if I pay the difference? I really wish I had remembered the check evga's prices on their cards before buying from newegg.

Sent a PM and the answer would be a negative! Lol was worth a shot.

While I continue to wait for my parts, I've started creating a list of what I plan to add to it.

I want to stick with a red, black, and white theme. Unfortunately, the vandal power switch it comes with is blue by default. I will be purchasing these to remedy that.
16mm momentary vandal reset switch and a 22mm latching vandal power switch

I had planned on sleeving my own cables, but just don't see myself having the time or patience to do it. With that said, Corsair makes a great looking white set of sleeved cables that should be perfect! And it comes with the 24 pin power connector!

Lastly, I would like a fan controller. I've never owned one and always hated having to go inside my case to manually change fan speeds. Lamptron seems like the most obvious choice. I just need to decide between the FC5v2 or the FC5v3.

    Re:Thomas The Tank | T3 | Build Log 09.31.2013 2013/09/04 02:05:34 (permalink)
Well, I managed to get everything but the Corsair H100i hooked up and running. No codes at all, either. This is unheard of with my luck. Oh and I even installed Home Premium and tested out the Asus Impact's built in Wireless AC module and the SupremeFX card.

The wireless AC module is top notch. Was even connecting just fine without the antennas connected. I compared the speeds against my external Lynksys AE3000-NP wireless adapter. Both were maxing out at 18mbps. This tells me my AT&T U-Verse was limiting the test. Oh well!

The Supreme FX sound card is amazing. I usually use my DreamBass usb plug in, but while it sounds good, the volume gets distorted really quickly if I turn it up too much. The Asus Supreme FX had no such issue and the bass representation was a lot more punchy. I love it.

The G.Skill memory(1866MHz) booted right up at 1600MHz before setting the XMP profile. Tested both sticks separately, and 0 issues. I would HIGHLY recommend these bad boys to anyone. Especially when they're less than $70 for 8GB.

    The 4770K.. hmm.. We'll see.

As for the AX760 I used to power everything. I'll be watching it like a hawk. First, I noticed a small rattle noise. Barely noticeable, however I kept putting my ear to the fan to listen. If it's not audible in my S3 case, then I won't care. However, there was another issue. As I was picking it up to put it back in its box to store while I wait for my case(sigh) I heard what sounds like a loose piece of metal or plastic. This is a big red flag for me. Once again.. I will keep a very close eye on it and RMA is need be.

Lastly.. the GTX 780 ACX SC!!! Okay, so people have been complaining a lot on here about the fan not going lower than 43% and sometimes making weird noises. I compared both fans and they are really nice and quiet. The sound they do make is not an annoying type of sound. It's almost like a constant cool breeze sound. However, one of the fans does make a very very small hum pitch while the other is dead silent except for the fan breeze. Also, the ACX cooler is so sexy looking! I had been contemplating trading it in for the Asus Direct CU2 780, but not anymore. I like the industrial yet subtle look of it and I feel it will match my squarish case much better than the Asus DC2 which is a lot more angular.

See that mouse right there                                                                       ^    It's the Logitech MX310. One of the most durable and best mice ever, in my opinion. Going strong now for over 10 years when I first bought it. If anyone here has owned it, they know what I'm talking about!

Looks like Dell wants to compete with their own Alienware line. Check out the new Dell Inspiron featuring an EVGA GTX 780 and externally mounted PSU. With Dell's competitive pricing, it only costs $9,999!

Got bored and decided to run some Heaven benchmarks.
Didn't do too bad considering the CPU is an E5700, only 4gb of memory, and a really loud 5400rpm hdd.

Done for now! Cable management is pretty awesome in this case, too!

Very nice looking build.  I bet you are loving that board, right?

It has a few issues, like not working with my TactX keyboard, but that might be Alienware's side of things and I think it's time for me to finally get a taste of mechanical keyboards anyways.

    10.05.13 Update:
I finally purchased some fans for my rig. The reason I took so long is because there's way too many fans to choose from out there! After doing all the research I could, I felt confident with the Enermax Vegas Duo(Red/Blue) 120MM fans for the front intake and a Corsair AF Quiet Edition 140mm fan in the rear exhaust. I highly, highly recommend these Enermax fans if you want quiet/high cfm! I'm not sure why they aren't very popular on Newegg, but wow are they awesome. They each come with 11 different LED effects and a small thumb screw shaped knob for adjusting fan speed.

^ Little buttons routed outside so I can easily change which LED mode I want the fans to be in.
I also purchased the NZXT Hue RBG Controller. It comes with a 2 meter LED strip that you stick on your case. It's a pain routing and installing for the best configuration, but once done.. it looks great.

And lastly, I used some double sided foam tape to install a custom made fan filter. It does distract from the clean square lines of the case, but installing it inside was not going to work and this way I can keep dust out of my baby. Well worth the compromise.

A few shots outside for better clarity!

    UPDATE: 2/21/14

Unfortunately, the Asus Maximus VI Impact motherboard I'd chosen died on me. However, at the same time, I had been kind of wanting to move to an mATX build. So I guess it was fate, lol.

I ended up giving my brother the Mercury S3 as a gift and after saving up some money, I've just recently purchased the CaseLabs Mercury S5 mATX case in white. I also picked up the mATX MSI Z87M Gaming motherboard as a replacement after reading a lot of great reviews for it. This is my first motherboard that isn't made by Asus. I am very impressed so far. The board allows me to easily overclock my 4770K to 4.4GHz with zero effort and idle temps in the 11-20c range with load temps never hitting 55c

I sold my Asus GTX 780 DCUII because I wanted to get the "K|NGP|N" Classified. As most of you know, that card goes out of stock so fast it's not even funny! While waiting for it to come in stock again, I  scoured the web reading reviews on that card as well as the regular Ti Classified. In the end, the regular one seemed like the best choice for me. I know I will be keeping it on air and the K|NGP|N is meant for Water/LN2 builds.

Right now, I'm waiting in pure agony for my card, case, and misc. stuff for the build to arrive. I will take a lot of pics once it all comes in and I begin swapping everything from my Define R4(temporary) into the S5.

My case fans and LED lights arrived today. The fans have this one setting called "sparkle mode" that just looks amazing. The Logisys Sunsticks are nice and bright. They don't come with any kind of switch, though. So when I want them off, I'll have to open the case and unplug the molex connector.

Got a lot of parts in and completed the case swap. I think it looks great. I may eventually move to a custom loop, but that could be pretty far down the road. I'm done for now and I'll be enjoying some gaming at 1270MHz daily. The Ti Classified is a beast even on air.
