Please see below message:

“The test used in the referenced review from Toms Hardware (Germany) is running under Furmark, an extreme usage case, as most overclockers know. We believe this is a good approach to have some idea about the graphics card limit, and the thermal performance under the worst case scenario. EVGA has performed a similar qualification test during the design process, at a higher ambient temperature (30C in chamber) with a thermal coupler probe directly contacting the key components and after the Toms Hardware (Germany) review, we have retested this again. The results in both tests show the temperature of PWM and memory is within the spec tolerance under the same stress test, and is working as originally designed with no issues.

With this being said, EVGA understands that lower temperatures are preferred by reviewers and customers.

During our recent testing, we have applied additional thermal pads between the backplate and the PCB and between the baseplate and the heatsink fins, with the results shown below. We will offer these optional thermal pads free of charge to EVGA owners who want to have a lower temperature. These thermal pads will be ready soon; and customers can request them on Monday, October 24th, 2016.  Also, we will work with Toms Hardware to do a retest.”

Thanks,
EVGA

EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW running Furmark with thermal pad mod (30C Ambient in Chamber) – October 21st, 2016

I received my 1080 FTW from RMA due to the 100%BS issue earlier this month. Does my card have the thermal strip?

With this issue being found recently and brought to the attention of EVGA, I would assume that your card would not have been adjusted since EVGA just tested this out.

I have a SC 1080, however have since replaced it with GTX Hybrid kit. How is that cooler set for cooling of that section of VRM's?

I certainly don't wish to take it apart again to inspect, so could someone from EVGA please comment.

The hybrid utilizes a base plate for the VRM just like the Founders Edition has.

Cheers, that's good to know and bit peace of mind. I will possibly still order the thermal solution for the ACX cooler though, in the event that I require to re-fit stock cooler. (for sale etc.)

Can you run a test on the 1070 SCs and make a statement on them? There were tests done and reports that showed they were overheating, as well. I just received mine, but I'd rather return and not have to deal with potential heat issues if there isn't a definitive test and statement.

The 1070 pcb is the exact same layout as the 1080. The results should be nearly the same.

A. Are these for the FTW models only or normal PCB models as well, (SC edition)

B. There will obviously be a shipping fee, so can they be shipped in combination with the powerlink(s) when that program goes live on November 1st?

Well really there shouldnt be a shipping fee if this is a fix imo, and tbh if we have to take our cards apart and install our powerlinks should be shipped free as compensation

Any indication on how long shipping will take to the Netherlands, seeing EVGA is based in the US.

It doesn't look like the card in the tomshardware.de test has its backplate on, while in the EVGA test there is still a backplate. Does this make a big difference (if any at all)? I don't know much about thermal imaging. Its just something that crossed my mind

Will I have to take apart my card to install these? I would rather not - my card shipped 8/10 and is a 1070 ftw so it is definitely effected by this hardware design failure - can I send this in for a replacement card? Am I eligible for an advance RMA so Ican still play the skyrim release next Friday?

The only question I can answer at this time is that any user ordering just the thermal tape will have to take the card apart to install the tape. This will also require a small amount of thermal paste so that they core can be retimmed as well.

Will the mod be available for 1070 SC owners as well? Since the PCB is the same? Time to order some GC Extreme. Sorry for late questions, I was at the hospital all day while this was unfolding.

When Ford determines there is a defect in one of their car models they do not send the parts to the buyer and tell them to fix it themselves.
I didn't pay $1000 to make repairs. Repairs I don't have the tools or the skills for.
I want my card replaced.

Yup, just wanted to make sure there arent any "surprises" like some non standard torx screws anywhere. Had one annoying experience with apple hardware and their non standard pentalobe screws, thats why haha

I happened to see a post on reddit where they were saying it would be for the 1070 FTWs also. The SCs use the reference PCB so they shouldn't be affected.

that is a good news. very appreciated.

however as i am using ftw 1070 with arctic aio installed (i really want to apply evga hybrid kit but it just not yet be available and i cant wait for it anymore).
installing other aio needs the cooling plate of vrm and vram to be removed as this cooling plate blocks the aio mounting...

since tomhardware and guru3d both have concluded the same about evga ftw vrm temps, i am willing to pay for the evga independent vrm heatsink in 1080 ftw hybrid (with screws of course) ... may i buy this heatsink from evga?? i really worry about my card now.

Will there be a step by step guide on how to perform this mod for those of us who have never taken apart a GPU before? Will we need to buy thermal paste? Will this void the warranty? (I'm assuming not)

when i got my ftw i already added thermal pads on the back of the pcb for better cooling.
i was using 2.5mm thermal pads from 3m but 2.5mm is a little bit too thick as the back plate got slightly bended. 2mm should fit better.

taking off the back plate is easy, just remove all those screws behind the pcb except the four screws for gpu socket.

Yes what about the classified as this does not have the thermal pads between them either??

there are certainly thermal pads between the cooling plate and the front of pcb.
but there are no thermal pads between the back plate and the back of the pcb.

Can anyone tell me how serious of an issue this is? EVGA says it's not serious, but are still offering a solution so I'm confused how necessary this is.

Do I really need to have these thermal pads installed? I don't have my 2x 1080 FTWs overclocked at all and I only use them for gaming. I think I have a 3 year warranty so I suppose I could just RMA if this becomes a problem, right? I don't really want to believe the people talking about sparks/flames shooting out of their EVGA GFX cards. It's stuff like that, that keeps me up at night

It's only as serious of an issue as you want it to be. I'm not the least bit concerned. Then again, mine are going under water as soon as Watercool makes the blocks for them.
Even if I wasn't, I would still get the thermal pads, but install them when I got around to it.
