I have a new X299 Dark motherboard that will not boot. Post error code is dF with 3 beeps. No video, no USB ports and a PS/2 keyboard is not recognized.

I pulled the board out of the case for troubleshooting. Replaced the CMOS battery which was low when tested (I learned that here looking for some tips). RAM looks good. LEDs all show fine according to what I have read here and in the manual. I removed the CPU and reseated while the board was out and checked for bent pins on the socket and it looks good to my old eyes.

I tried the RAM in singles one at a time and tried another single stick just to see if I could get in to the BIOS with no joy. I have tried a spare video card also. All results lead to the dF error code. I also cleared the CMOS and tried the other CMOS options... same results.

Open to suggestions at this point. All parts are new ordered just for this build. The only questionable item is the G.Skill RAM was not on the QVL list for a 64GB kit, but I did find a similar part number for a 32GB kit.

Specs are:
X299 Dark
Intel 10900X CPU
64 GB G.Skill Trident Z quad kit of p/n # F4-3600C17Q-64GTZSW
EVGA GTX1080ti Hybrid
EVGA Supernova 1600 T2 power supply
Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB - M.2 NVMe (MZ-V7S1T0B/AM)

The dF post code shows as a reserved for future use, so not sure what to do with that.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I had the same error with a 10980xe.

If you bought a x299 Dark motherboard last month, those boards typically came with an outdated BIOS that won't work with the new cpus. The ones shipping now are supposedly up to date.

Call customer service and explain your issue. They will send you a new BIOS chip with 1.20 on it through USPS.

Thanks for the reply. I did contact customer service and a new BIOS chip will be here today. I will update the results in case it might help others.

I do have another question. When I flash a new BIOS, do I need to repeat that process for the other two backup BIOS options? And if so, how does that process work exactly? Can I just move the switch to BIOS #2 after the system has booted and then repeat the flash process? My concern is if the backup BIOS is a version older than 1.20 that I will not be able to boot from that to flash.

And kudos to EVGA for getting the new BIOS shipped out the same day I called (on the New Years eve holiday)! That shaved a week off delivery time :)

Thanks!

Re: X299 Dark will not post - error code dF 2020/01/03 08:26:00 (permalink)
That's affirmative.

If you flash it in Windows, boot into Windows first and then move the switch to another BIOS and run the update.bat file.

If you flash in BIOS using a USB flash drive, boot into first BIOS, then move the switch to another BIOS and flash the .bin file.

BIOS Version 1.20

I received the new BIOS chip with ver 1.20 on it and that did indeed resolve the dF post code error.

All has been reassembled and is running as it should. Now the tweaking begins... OK maybe tomorrow :)

Thanks for the support EVGA!

Glad to hear it

On a side note, one thing that swung me over to Asus is the USB BIOS Flashback feature their boards have had for a while..The only thing you need to flash the BIOS is power to the board, no CPU, no RAM, no nothing..Good to see that EVGA features that on some of their boards now.

Have fun.

Can confirm....  booting into windows with the 1.20 BIOS chip EVGA sent me, then moving slider, running the bios update batch allowed me to update all three BIOS to 1.20 and all is good.

Bummer!  I just experienced the same thing.  They are mailing me a new bios chip.  I wonder why EVGA said it would post and enable us to update the bios to the latest when using the i9-109xx if it doesn't, infact, post at all without the new bios.  Maybe some older bios versions will allow it and others won't?

Ordered the board from EVGA on Tuesday... received it today... dF post code trying to boot with a 10900X.  Before ordering I called customer support and they said the bios should be updated prior to shipping, but oh well... guess I'll need to get the new bios sent in the mail.  I'm just glad I did a bench test before taking apart my current system to upgrade!

UPDATE: Remembering that there's a BIOS selector switch, I figured I'd see if maybe one of the other pre-loaded BIOS would work... sure enough version 1.20 was loaded onto the right most switch (came in the center position).  Very happy to be able to get my upgrades installed!

Hey guys i ordered the board about a week ago with the i9-10900x. You think I probably have the older bios? It was shipped with the switch to rightmost position.

If you bought the board directly from the EVGA Store, it should have the latest BIOS installed at the time of shipment.

If you bought the board from a retailer such as Newegg or wherever, then it's hard to tell.

It needs at least BIOS Version 1.19 to run an i9-10900X..The installed BIOS version is like shown here at the bottom-right in the BIOS..Version 1.21 is latest BIOS version as of now.

Thanks. Just like OP I can't get it to post. I did purchase it from Newegg so I'm going to call tomorrow and have them ship out a new chip.

I heard EVGA was pretty quick at shipping out those BIOS chips

If you want to when you get it, what you can do is replace the BIOS chip with the new one per the instructions in your motherboard manual..Grab the latest (1.21) BIOS for the Windows Installation method..Then while your PC is running, carefully hot-swap the old chip back in..Then flash to update all the BIOS' with the Windows Method by running the update.bat file..Just move the BIOS selector switch to the desired position to flash that BIOS which you'll need to do to BIOS 2 and 3..Only BIOS 1 is on the removeable chip from what I understand from reading reviews.

Or, you could flash BIOS 2 and 3 with the new chip installed..Then turn off your PC and put the old chip back in..Then boot from updated BIOS 2 or 3..Then slide the switch to BIOS 1 and flash/update it..Then put the new chip back in..However you wanna do it.

That way you'll have two updated/working chips

Hey guys so I just got the updated BIOS chip and it is in the board. Unfortunately now I'm running in to a new problem where I'm still getting no power to the mouse/keyboard and no signal to the monitor, however, the 3 beeps are gone and there is no code dF. No code at all actually its completely blank. The d8 led is red. Any suggestions?

Did you do a cmos reset after you installed the new chip?

I just got a board back from RMA yesterday. Will it have the new BIOS for Cascade Lake-X? I don't want to disassemble my current system only to have to wait for a BIOS chip.

Thanks guys.  Did you guys get it to work?  Im pretty sure I did all 3 bios settings last night and it didnt boot right but now it does.  I cant remember if I just switched to the far right a few mins ago or not.  Thats what it is.  Im not using the i9 10900x like all of you its the i9 9940 (lame how its on newegg now cheaper too after I bought the 9940 IM NOT OVERCLOCKING going with stock speeds I will switch processors with you) and I have the same issues.

Im probably going to put this off for another day to see if it will post right not in the mood to hooking everything up.

For a min I thought it was the RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards I was like no way this is happening.  The board wont even show a error code with a graphics card in a slot but it will when theres no graphics card.  I hooked a different graphics card one of my older ones in to make sure it wasnt the cards and it did the samething.

Reviving this because I have a similar issue,
I will probably make a thread but hopefully we can find a solution.
2 days ago I booted up an got no beeps/no picture, looked at the MB and saw a C in the postcodes. After that I could not get post codes to show anything and I'm getting D8 on the leds plus the cpu_error leds.
Iv tried everything based on the info from multiple forums on x299 dark.
Iv replaced the PSU, cmos battery reset/replaced, tested individual ram, removed the cpu an reapplied thermal paste, bios 1,2,3 and still have no luck on getting a boot.
