KB5031445 preview update released Oct 26 for W10

No issues post update, post update.

If you use bitLocker, read the details for a known Error

Microsoft -  October 26, 2023—KB5031445 (OS Build 19045.3636) Preview
(excerpt)
 Highlights
  • This update addresses an issue that affects touchscreens. They do not work properly when you use more than one display.
ImprovementsImportant: Use EKB KB5015684 to update to Windows 10, version 22H2.
This non-security update includes quality improvements. When you install this KB:
  • This update supports daylight saving time (DST) changes in Syria. To learn more, see Interim guidance for Syria DST changes 2022.
  • This update addresses a memory leak in ctfmon.exe.
  • This update addresses a memory leak in TextInputHost.exe.
  • This update addresses an error that occurs when you print using v4 print drivers.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects Outlook. It stops responding. This occurs when you print to an Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) printer that has a slow response time.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects connectivity. It is lost. This occurs when you add a second network interface card (NIC) that has no default gateway.
  • This update makes Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) profiles up to date for certain mobile operators.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC). Its “allow” policies might block some binaries from running.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects robocopy. The /efsraw switch stops it from copying data properly.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

 BleepingComputer.com - Windows 10 KB5031445 preview update fixes ctfmon.exe memory leak, 9 issues
(excerpts)
Microsoft has released the optional KB5031445 Preview cumulative update for Windows 10 22H2 with nine improvements or fixes, including a fix for a memory leak in ctfmon.exe.
The KB5031445 cumulative update preview is part of Microsoft's "optional non-security preview updates" schedule, which are typically released on the fourth Tuesday of every month. This update allows Windows admins to test upcoming fixes and features that will be released in the upcoming November Patch Tuesday.

The only known issue in this update causes BitLocker errors:
"Using the FixedDrivesEncryptionType or SystemDrivesEncryptionType policy settings in the BitLocker configuration service provider (CSP) node in mobile device management (MDM) apps might incorrectly show a 65000 error in the "Require Device Encryption" setting for some devices in your environment," explains the release notes.
"Affected environments are those with the "Enforce drive encryption type on operating system drives" or "Enforce drive encryption on fixed drives" policies set to enabled and selecting either "full encryption" or 'used space only'."
"Microsoft Intune is affected by this issue but third-party MDMs might also pe affected."
Microsoft says this is only a reporting issue, not a BitLocker drive encryption problem. Redmond says they are working on a fix and will release it when it's ready.

Typical MS update shortcoming, needed an additional scan after the last update yesterday, before it found another update ".NET" to install

Both update were posted by MS on 26 October, yet only the first one showed up, until after the first was installed & an additional manual scan was run

Did MS push the update to you via Windows Update, or did you manually run/install it?  I see it was released 10/31, but must be incrementely pushing it out to users I'm thinking.

Thanks for the info.  I saw the .iso on a site, but decided to just wait for MS to push it to me.

2 new Windows 11 updates with reported issue's installing.  KB5034123 Cumulative update & KB5033920 cumulative update for .Net framework.  I originally tried installing them together which failed.  I then updated just KB5033920 which installed fine after reboot.  I then tried to install KB5034123 again and it failed.

I haven't attempted any of the fixes mentioned in this video yet, but here it is ->  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZsgJIWUC2s

I tried a few things this morning and attempted to install that update again with no luck.  It's unclear how wide spread this issue is, but good to hear both updates installed as they should for you.

Re: Windows Updates successes and/or problems thread 2024/01/11 08:55:08 (permalink)
I guess no one here is running into "Windows 10 KB5034441 security update fails with 0x80070643 errors" "Microsoft KB5034441 Windows 10 security patch for BitLocker bypass is leading to errors and has a complicated fix".
I myself have not of the systems I have updated, and I checked the size of the WinRE partition and my system has a 1000 MB with another that was 827 MB … unsure how they got to that size?

Edit: Found this interesting,
The disk partition for Windows RE tools must be at least 300 megabytes (MB). Typically, between 500-700 MB is allocated for the Windows RE tools image (Winre.wim), depending on base language and added customizations.
The allocation for Windows RE must also include sufficient free space for backup utilities to capture the partition. Follow these guidelines to create the partition:
  • For Windows operating systems prior to Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows Server 2022:
    • If the partition is smaller than 500 MB, it must have at least 50 MB of free space.
    • If the partition is 500 MB or larger, it must have at least 320 MB of free space.
    • If the partition is larger than 1 gigabyte (GB), it must have at least 1 GB of free space.
  • For Windows operating systems later than Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows Server 2022, the partition must have at least 200 MB of free space.
  • The partition must use the following Type ID:
    DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC
  • The Windows RE tools should be in a partition that's separate from the Windows partition. This separation supports automatic failover and the startup of partitions that are encrypted by using Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption.

The December update for W11 killed my old CAD program.  I hope a future Windows update will fix whatever broke or I may have to finally update it.

The December update for W11 killed my old CAD program.  I hope a future Windows update will fix whatever broke or I may have to finally update it.

If you haven't tried yet, you can try running your CAD program in "Compatibility Mode".

Open your File Explorer > locate the folder your CAD program is in and open it > right click on the .exe file that runs the program > Click on the Compatibilty tab > Put a check mark in the box to "Run this program in Compatibilty mode for..."  select the last OS from the list where CAD ran well.  Probably Windows 7 or 8/8.1, click apply/Ok and see how it works out.
