Windows 7's lifespan is almost over, with the OS' extended security support coming to an end on January 14th, 2020. After this date, all but a minority of Professional users will stop receiving security updates for the OS, with updates being exclusive to those who purchase "Extended Security Update" (ESU) coverage.

This change means that Windows 7 users will need to transition to Windows 10 to retain security support for their systems, and Microsoft plans to do whatever it can to ensure that Windows 7 users update their systems. That's right, Microsoft plans to update Windows 7 with a "full-screen notification" that will ask Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10.

Microsoft's Windows 7 notifications will describe to users the "risk of continuing to use Windows 7 Service Pack 1 after it reaches end of support on January 14, 2020". Basically, Microsoft plans to scare Windows 7 users into upgrading their systems, except for Windows 7 Professional users with ESU coverage. These notifications will impact Windows 7 Starter Edition, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional (non-ESU) and Ultimate users, giving notifications to practically all consumer-grade Windows 7 systems.

When it comes to security, Windows 7 users should consider moving to Windows 10 in the near future, as after January 14th, Microsoft is leaving their legacy Windows 7 OS open to exploitation. If hackers discover an exploit, Microsoft won't patch their OS to mitigate it, making systems forever insecure.

Time to upgrade if you're on Windows 7

Why rely on MS for security ... they built the OS with all the holes & are usually slow to patch ... 3rd party security can keep Win 7 alive for Years

Unlikely to happen, any updates for win 7 after then will be private to paying customers only unless they are extremely critical (like windows xp update from a little while ago).  Security companies aren't in the business of losing money to "customers" that are not even willing to fork out nothing to upgrade lol.

Yes but updates for DirectX won't be available either. That means that any new DirectX ray tracing APIs won't be available.

For the past two weeks I've been upgrading a lot of Windows 7 systems to 10 due to Microsoft's nag screens in the shop. Nevertheless it's good for business, including upgrading some customers to SSDs.

I have win10 on most of my systems except 3.
I still use Windows media center. If MS brings it to w10 I will upgrade those boxes to it.

I wonder if I should be glad I upgraded to windows 10 on day one, before anyone had time to start hating it? People talking about it has made me hate it far more than using it ever did.
Still if something works well, that's what counts I think, regardless of if it's windows 10, windows 7, QDOS, or a potato powered abacus.

Since the Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 still works I don't think it's really that hard of a sell. Only bad thing is a lot of people don't really realize they can so easily upgrade as that and often will buy the software to do it.

It was the privacy concerns that kept everyone from upgrading, rightfully so but there are ways to work around the telemetry nonsense.  The other issues were being forced to Windows Update and ruining your machine.

Overall, it's been a decent OS to me.  Not as great as Win 7, XP and 2000 which are my top 3 favs.

Microsoft has a compulsion to force software as a service corporate culture on us all with Windows 10 revolving door updates every 6 months. If they would only freeze features and actually address performance and bug issues, that would be enough. They have the sickness of being incapable of leaving well enough alone. It's change for change sake to force IT business on a regular schedule. What is good for some businesses is bad for others. This is parasitic business practice by forcing us to always update forever in the future. Not a fan of forced obsolescence. It guarantees things will break every 6 months, and forces software developers to perpetually adjust their software for an ever expanding number of Windows 10 patch versions. What a crappy way of doing business.

Dualboot here on my build, I just wish Microsoft would stop forcing crap drivers and breaking crap every six month. Made the wifes Laptop useless for a few week till the following update came out. Pure horsecrap.................

Although, I did switch the wifes laptop to Metered-Data like my own build, seem to help alot!!!
