What is going on with EVGA's 3080's tempatures?

I am reading user reviews and the few reviews by actual websites out there:

Users are saying it runs mid 70's at like 70-80% fan speed.  FTW3 that is. XC3's are hitting the 80's. I gotta ask...what is happening? After the Teardown by Gamers Nexus and his review pending...the thing scores and clocks well, but not insanely more than other 3080's.

Take the ASUS Tuf. It's a 699$ card VS the FTW3 Ultra which is 810$. 110$ USD more. It runs within 1% of the TUF...but is between 12 and 15c hotter. The ASUS 3080 TUF hits like 60-62c maximum under load with 60-70% fan speed and is dead silent. Like 30dB.

We're seeing all the low end 699 and what not cards match and go blow for blow or beat the EVGA's 3080 lineup so far.  Zotac, MSI, Gigabyte Eagle ect - are all cooling as good or better and are significantly cheaper. I love EVGA and as you can see signed up here in 2007, been a big fan and always recommend them to folks, but this is looking disappointing.

I'm worried about it too. The good thing is that if you get your card and it doesn't live up to expectations, just return it after you've secured a better card.

Someone speculated that evgas design would have higher gpu temps as a trade off of better cooling on other components but I don't know if that's true or not. I plan on throwing a water block on my ftw 3 anyway so I'm fine with the temps right now.

My FTW3 hits in the 80's on the stock fan curve, which was obnoxiously loud for me.

My testing from a previous thread:
    masterkaj
    Steps taken on my end:
    1. After round one of emails with EVGA, they said I could try to re-paste.  I did so using Arctic MX-4, temps MAYBE dropped 1*C.  So the paste job they did was really good already.
    2. Turned my case fans to 100%, temps didn't budge.
    3. Opened side panel in case, case fans set to 100%, temps dropped from 86C to 84-85C... so not much
    4. Side panel still off, put a 12" house fan pointed directly at the GPU area, turned GPU fans manually to 100%, temps dropped to 80*C.  This is ridiculous for normal use cause its comically loud but it still was super warm.  This was just ran for diagnostic purposes
    5. Swapped to the OC bios to confirm no bios issue, temps hit 84*C using stock fan curve (Precision X1 closed).

After all those steps they recommended I RMA the card.  If it really just an issue with my card I'm happy to RMA and try again.  I was hoping for max temps around 72-73C with no OC and stock fan curve.  Lower is obviously better due to fan noise...

I’m also disappointed with my ftw3 temps. I had a gigabyte gaming oc 3080 that I sold when I got this card and it ran much cooler. I never heard the gigabyte and it never broke 70c. My ftw3 on the other hand has gotten as high as 78 with a very aggressive fan curve hitting 100% at 70c. It sounds like a jet engine or something, it’s so loud that I can hear it through my headphones... I already ordered thermal paste and pads and I will be replacing the paste and adding pads between the back of the pcb and backplate. I’ll post my results on the forums. It’s unfortunate because the card looks amazing and has in my opinion the best rgb implementation of this generation.

EVGA's cooler has a base plate extending from the gpu to the surrounding vram. Since it is all connected, this may be the cause of the higher temps on the GPU itself? I mean, the vram always (usually, see below) contacts the main cooler also, but this base plate links it to the GPU contact as well which would raise temps. I know this is definitely the case with the EVGA hybrid cards (which the GPU runs a few degrees more than the competition, but the vram runs cooler), but not completely sure on the air cooled cards. Gamer nexus tested the hybrid cards without this base plate extension and the EVGA hybrid GPU temps lowered to about what you would expect a hybrid gpu to be.

It seems the tuf RTX 3080 has only the GPU and VRMs contacting the main cooler and the vram has it's own separate cooling fins. This would account for the lower temps since the main cooler doesn't have to deal with as much heat output.

Yeah, I'm definitely not going to run a card that requires 100% fan speed at all times. That's insane.
My 2080Ti Gaming X Trio never saw higher than 65-70c under load with fans at 50%.

Wouldn't compare 420W to 320W TDP cards or 3x8 vs 2x8 pin cards in general, especially since from all the benchmarks, it's pretty clear that increasing power by 20% does not increase performance by 20% but that would certainly increase temps.

Wouldn't the 3080 with more transistors and cudacores are going to generate more heat than a 1080ti?

Lets not get side tracked talking about other cards. What is concerning though is all the numbers we are seeing from other manufacturers. Why is it taking reviewers so long to put out reviews for this card and comparing it with other cards. Temps seem to be way 10C over other cards.

His power usage is sub 80% in that video, of course his temps are going to be lower.  Also that sounds like a wind tunnel to me.

My 3080xc runs 65c underload in low end games like Kenshin Impact, but if I boot up CoD or Destiny 2 its hits 80c+, I think heaven is a bit antiquated for testing such a powerful card.

It's a light load, he's riding the end of the voltage/frequency curve like a pony.  At 75% power with the strix bios he's pulling about 275w.

What I'd like to see is a comparison with the stock bios on Heaven, if it can be clocked as high with similar power use.

I just got my 3080 ftw3 ultra and will post my temps, but my gigabyte g1 gtx 970 stays at 55-60 with max overclock on stock bios and fans at 100%(210watts with voltage and power slider maxed), on evga 2080 super xc3 ultra with mild overclock and power and temp sliders maxed out i was able to get it just under 55c, ambient temp is 20-21c, case is define r5 with 2 140mm at the front at 100%, one 140 mm on the bottom at 100%, 140mm on the back at 100%, and 2 120mm on top on my cpu aio at 100% as well

3090 FTW3 temps in games/bench with default fan curve, usually around low 70's. 3080 is a few degrees lower. Chassis airflow will be the biggest factor for temps.

1080ti cooler compare to this...this gen is garbage.

This is a bit unfair comparison, 3090 TDP is almost 100W more, not to mention nearly double the perf.

    How about a private link to buy a 3080 ftw3? 😅

Look at his temps. That's strix bios? Power limit is higher then 107.

His power usage is sub 80% in that video, of course his temps are going to be lower.  Also that sounds like a wind tunnel to me.

         a Couple things remember it's  80% of the 450W Strix Bios so  that's 360W  and it's a 98% load and holding 2115MHz for over 15mins

It's a light load, he's riding the end of the voltage/frequency curve like a pony.

My 2080 Ti XC gaming with the stock 2-slot cooler and 260w PL, stock settings, ran Heaven at 56C.

Run FURMARK at 2560x1920 0x MSAA.  Card should clock horribly and it should ride the power limit.

LOL What man Port Royal not good enough now whatever

Port Royal is great.  Your score is great.

But this thread is about Temps, so figuring out what temp the card goes to when actually on the power limit is helpful.
