A friend of mine got EVGA GTX 980 Ti SCs which have ASIC quality of 86.2% and 83.7% respectively but I have GTX titan X which has ASIC qulity of only 61.3%. Should I return my GTX Titan X and grab GTX 980 Ti?

If you don't need 12Gb of vram, the 980 TI is a better option for gaming (and much cheaper).

I hate to be unhelpful but it could just be probability. That being said, the Titan Xs seem to run at a slightly higher temperate, probably due to the full GM200, but I've seen them comfortably clocked to the same frequencies as 980Tis under sufficient cooling.

My Titan X does run really hot unless I set the fan profile to aggresive mode.

Cost-to-performance wise, obviously the 980Ti is the clear choice. But if you require >6GB VRAM, or are simply willing to spend the additional money for a few extra fps, then the Titan X is the card to choose.

From what I've read the whole asic = better chip really isn't all that true. Correct me if I'm wrong.

How much VRAM is actually necessary has been debated in several threads over the past couple of months. For the vast majority of currently available games you will not require >6GB of VRAM for 4K. But there are a handful of titles that come relatively close to 6GB (as shown in benchmarks) and a couple that surpass it. So I would say it depends how long you want to keep the Titan X/980Ti. If you're going to upgrade when Pascal is released in Q2 2016 then you may as well save the money by buying the 980Ti instead. But if you want to keep the card you choose until late 2016/early 2017, I personally believe an increasing number of titles are going to surpass that 6GB threshold and therefore the 12GB will be useful. DX12 WILL inevitably be mentioned by someone but it will not help previously released games and it will only be supported by the AAA developers in 2015/2016, so VRAM stacking (if you were to consider SLI 980Tis in the future) isn't a magical solution for VRAM.

You could consider a Hybrid cooler for it, in which case the voltage would be the limiting factor rather than the temperature and you could push the card as far as it'll go. The additional temperature is mainly due to the Titan X's 24 SMX clusters instead of the 980Tis 22.

Because we are limited by voltage it does. In my experience a lower ASIC does not overclock as good. Out of the box if you set your power target to max and don't overclock, a card with a higher ASIC will boost naturally higher also.

So...many...arguments :p. I've read quite a few heated discussions concerning ASIC and I believe it does indicate lower voltage requirements and therefore probably is a measure of overclocking potential, but I'm not an electronic engineer ;).

Anything over 70% is really good, IMHO.

Yeah the ASIC... From my personal experience I can agree that a higher ASIC is better for OC. Currently I'm using an G1 Gaming 980 with a low ASIC of 66 and this card overclocks like ****. Can't get 1500 core stable no matter how much volt (through bios mod up to 1275 mV). Bevor i bought the card I read a lot in different forum about the cards and just everyone got the card over 1500 core. Most of them with just a bit of additional voltage, and when you ask them about there asic's they are all over 70 close to 80. So yes it does matter how high your asic is, in case of the voltage limit we have.

That's not how it works. The ASIC bin is the voltage profile the card is binned for. It a rough estimate at best and lower voltage requirements only affect overclocking if the card is heat or power bottlenecked. Since you say that changing the voltage has no effect, ASIC is not your issue.

My 980 Ti asic is 64%. I have it running stable at 1400/7800 +30mv. Stock fan profile. Heat seems to be the limiting factor. I'm going to put a Kraken G10 on it and see what happens.

Lower ASIC doesn't necessarily mean the card will overclock less, although that was the case for me w/ my former 780 Classifieds --- based solely on the fact that I didn't add a ton more voltage to them. ---  In my experience with 680's, 780's, vanilla Titan, and 780 Ti, the higher ASIC score meant that I needed less voltage to attain a certain clock speed / over clock. You can look at the Kingpin cards that have low ASIC as an example. They overclock great but need more voltage to do it, which is why many people have them under water. Unless I am mistaken about the Kingpins. That's been my experience.

Some anecdotes now that I have two cards. I have a very tight microATX setup so the cards are right next to each other.

06G-P4-4990-KR (in top slot, intake fan blocked by lower card): 62% asic score. Default voltage is 25mv higher. At 1400 boost/3758 memory, 1.218v, 75 °C, it is volt limited.
06G-P4-4992-KR (in lower slot, intake fan not blocked): 68% asic score. At 1400 boost/3758 memory, 1.187v, 72 °C, it is limited by the other card.

If I put the 4992 in the other slot the temperature delta swings the other way by 12 °C. From this I conclude that the 4990 is the better card since it runs 6-7 °C cooler, even though it has a lower asic score and uses more power. I may try increasing the voltage further.

I would stick with the 12gb... but then again you don't need the logical processing cores of a Titanx, the TitanX is more geared towards game developers. But when push comes to shove A TitanX is faster regardless. This is something you have to ask yourself really. For me and for now on it will be Titan only only because I do 3d modeling and gaming at home.

This is my first post but second card from EVGA. I have a Evga sc gtx 980 acx 2.0 purchased in march through cyberpower with a 68% asic and a Evga sc gtx 980 ti acx 2.0 purchased directly from Evga in brea, ca also with the exact same 68% asic score. I think that Nvidia takes any GPU chips that score 90% and up for those none gaming cards that end up in high end servers. EVGA gets ones from Nvidia that are 90% - 80% for the Kingpin card, 80%-70% classified, and so on.. Its rare to get a high scoring chip on the "lower end" PCB. They probably had a few more high scoring chips than they needed for kingpin and classified cards and so goes the lottery.

72.8% for my reference 980Ti with ACX2.0+, I don't consider it all that important. Correct air and cooling management in a case is far more important for me.

Yea I can only clock my core to 150 while i play witcher 3 or I get artafacting and I can do all other games at 220 stable with a 73% asic score. Also I have a 980ti sc then put the hybrid kit on it my self.

Mine from step up got 73% and i am pretty happy with it seeing this is the first time a got one over 70%.

Currently running it with core +210 core and +300 mem with stock voltage. Could probably go higher of course but this will do just fine for now.
