I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions about VSync and how it can reduce screen tearing but also increases input delay and I’m not sure whether it’s better to have on or off, so what do y’all think?

For casual demanding singleplayer games I'd use vsync. For competitive high refresh rate games I wouldn't use it. Also screentearing is less noticeable at higher frame rates afaik for instance if a frame on a 144hz screen doesn't sync it's only 144th of a second. If a frame doesn't sync up on a 60hz monitor it's more noticeable

Yeah its really going to matter what game and how well vsync is implemented because it introduced input lag. But honestly ever since Nvidia put a frame rate limited in their control panel I see no real point in Vsync unless you just can't eliminate tearing in a certain game.

Depends on the game. Vsync can help some games that are poorly optimized. Outer World comes to mind. Other games like competitive shooters, you want Vsync off and instead use G-sync or Freesync due to input lag.

Good for single player or casual games, maybe not a good idea for competitive esports.

So have it on for a 60hz monitor but off for 144h monitor is what you're saying?

I never turn it on. If you're doing anything competitive it's bad. It can help smooth things out in single player games though.

I've always had the mantra of making sure my hardware is 'good enough' to never have to turn it on. I may be more fortunate than most though.

Doesn't having vsync off cause your gpu to basically run at close to 100% and send your temps through the roof (just pumping out as many frames as it possibly can, even if it's like double your refresh rate ... ie- not needed)?

Yeah but they're built to do that, the best way to stop that is to cap your FPS or underclock the gpu, but my main concern with VSync is screen tearing and input delay

I always use it but I rarely play any competitive multiplayer games and screen tearing drives me nuts.

I've got a G-sync compatible TV but I found out after I bought that my 1070 doesn't support VRR over its HDMI sockets, just its display ports. So until I upgrade that I'll be sticking with v-sync for a little while longer

I personally always turn it off, but I will say that there are games with well implemented v-sync that actually works well and doesn't come with an annoying amount of input lag, so honestly just check the game out online and see what people have to say about a game's v-sync implementation.

I usually have it off most of the time, I grew out of the habit of always turning V-sync on, but I never knew why some games it was recommended to have it on/off before.

There is no right answer. Depends on the games, your hardware, and play style. I still use it on slower panels especially, but I'm not playing many FPS games nowadays.

I Never use it in any competitive game, but always use it in single player story games, and I crank the settings up max.

Because I'm playing only FPS online I leave it off all the time. If you can use Freesync or Gsync that is the best option. Cap your FPS in-game to match your monitors refresh rate.

If your monitor has g-sync or free-sync, then definitely use that.  If you are getting less than 60 FPS because you can't find a modern parts at an affordable price, then turning vsync off should improve things quite a bit.  On my non-gaming laptop (integrated IBM trash), I see a 25% improvement by turning off vsync.  If you have a proper gaming card, then turning on vsync might not even be noticeable.

VSync limit your FPS to your Monitor-Refreshrate. I don't use it because I dont like the limitation. My friends also don't use this option and if somebody use it of them, they are disappointed. So I would say theres no difference and more FPS are better then the capped 60 or 120 or whatever

Depends on your monitor and genre. No for FPS games, no for g/free sync for me.

The only effect VSync will have is potentially worsening your frame rate and causing input lag. In this case, it's best to keep it off. When used correctly, VSync can help smooth out issues and keep your graphics processor from running red-hot
