So... my E758-TR has a hot-headed VReg and it makes OCing my i7 930 anywhere over 3.6GHz impossible due to the heat generated from the voltages needed. Are there any fan coolers that I can buy for the E758 Vreg heatsink? I have a few 40-60mm fans laying around but need a safe way to mount those securely, any ideas on that part? Once VReg temperatures go above 120ºC the PC will decide "enough is enough" and flash its "middle finger" BSOD and quit on me...

Get some cable ties and secure one of those fans to the VREG heat sink.

Ah, cool... as in put the fan on top of the heatsink and wrap a cable tie all the way around the whole thing? Always looked kinda risky to me

I always zip tie fans. I've done it on heat sinks and currently I have three fans zip tied in my case.

boredgunner I always zip tie fans. I've done it on heat sinks and currently I have three fans zip tied in my case. Interesting... here's a picture of my VReg with its surroundings... not much space from what I can tell... The cable left of the VReg is the CPU power connector... obnoxiously in the way. The 120mm fan on the left (rear fan) is actually an intake, i've installed the H50 radiator and push pull fans on the top of the case as an exhaust. Would you recommend fitting a fan on top of the VReg heatsink blowing down, or vertically next to the heatsink, blowing across? It'd be interesting to see how zip ties work to secure a fan in this situation... thanks!!

Hm yeah not a lot of space. Whatever fits right? If you can make it blow across the VREG heat sink, going with the flow of your rear fan, I say that's the way to go.

Last week I did a little revamp of fan placement after a trip to micro-center. Picked up 2 Sythe 120 fans @ 110 cfm 1900 rpm and added them to my H50 in push pull and mounted them to exhaust out the top of the 932 case. I didnt really like how the setup blocked the Vreg when mounted to exhaust out rear of case. in this pic there are three fan layouts with comments all taken @ 72F ambient and at idle/no load Note the 3rd pic vreg temps drop. I cut up the plastic case 1 of the fans came in and made a shroud to funnel approx 50% of the rear fan air directly through the vreg. Couldnt get a good pic so mah paint skillz will have to suffice Overview (kinda) I also added 2 more 120's exhusting out the top to replace the big stock fan that came in the 932. Last pic / drawing shows the rear fan arrows as exhaust by mistake. I did purchase 2 50mm mini-kaze fans to mount directly onto the vreg but wanted to see if anything else could be done without adding noise or extra load on my psu. Will get around to mounting them when I find the lost bundle of zip ties I have......somewhere.

Damn that's some low ass temperatures strider, same CPU? My ambient temps hover around 80 - 85 degrees so that could be a factor. I'm constantly sweating in the room so I can only imagine it for the PC My CPU core temps idle around the high 40s to low 50s, depending on if my room fan is on LOL. That's with a 3.6GHz overclock too... Ever since I installed a Cosmos S side panel with a 200mm 142CFM intake fan, my VReg dropped an average 10ºC so instead of being 85C idle it'd be around 75C idle now... tried a 60mm fan but it's too big to fit... now I gotta hunt around for those damn 40mm fans again... sigh~~

Got me a 50mm fan and installed it today, noticed an average of 10ºC temperature drop on the VReg, from 75 idle to 65! Keep in mind the ambient temperatures are high as hell, low 80F...

I've got the same issue. What I did was keep a 120mm fan blowing on the entire vreg. The temps don't go above 55c. I just bought the 70mm fan and thought it would do the trick. But it does not have the pushing force that the larger fan does. Give it a shot if you have an extra 120mm fan.

my VReg dropped an average 10ºC so instead of being 85C idle it'd be around 75C idle now... Your Vregs were idling at 85c? Poor motherboard!! I can't see any good reason why the Vregs should idle that hot. Something else is up. Have you removed the Vreg heatsink and looked at the thermal tape and checked to see if some of the voltage regulator modules aren't already burnt up? 85c is the max you want to let the Vregs reach. The fact that they were idling at 85c scares me alot; how hot were they getting under load? My Vregs idle at around 60c (which is still alot higher than I would like). Vregs can cook and fail around 85c and higher. If a voltage regulator modulator fails (without you realizing it), it will cause the remaining operating voltage regulators to absorb the added load which will cause them to run even hotter. The more that fail, the faster the remaining working ones will fail.

To add: Tell me if you have heard these symptoms before: My (video card or motherboard) started to smoke a little and stink. I turned off my computer, but couldn't see anything obviously wrong. I turned my computer on again and it seemed to work fine. But then, I started playing a game (or stress testing), and then my computer crashed. Now it won't turn on any more. What I just described is a pretty accurate summarization of a complaint I have read from time to time. The cause of the complaint is burning voltage regulator modules. The voltage regulator modules work in parallel with eachother. As one fails, the others take up the load; this causes them to fail at an accelerated rate a short term later.

I hate to say, the biggest problem you have is the EVGA heatsink. I have yet to see a single quality heatsink on anything they make. That "sexy" coating on whatever material they are using doesn't help much to cool it down. If its not naked copper, it ain't right. I should make a VR heatsink for that board out of pure copper. Consider me inspired...

Yeah, the vanilla X58's Vreg heatsink is awful. I have looked for aftermarket heatsinks before; no luck. Why can't I find an aftermarket one?

Wow, revived an old post LOL But to update I have a HAF X case now and plan on going air cooling, so VRM temps can drop a bit more (same board, E758). I always replace the default thermal pad with some EK thermal pad and that seems to help a bit. Me thinks that those X58 VRMs are also designed to withstand 100C

nateman_doo your getting rid of your H50 for an air cooler? I read too many reviews on how the Megahalem can beat the H50 at higher overclocks and with the right push pull fans. Besides, with an H50 there is no airflow around the CPU area causing my VReg temps to skyrocket. Krony I have a Megahalems for sale, depends where u live tho as shipping could be more expensive than buying a new one if ur in the US Let's talk! PM me a for sale post just like you would do in the marketplace

Would like to offer my solution for cooling the VREG... For a cost of less than $20. You can purchase a Thermaltake Cyclo Memory Cooling Kit. It's a rather large clear plastic, clip on memory cooler. simply disassemble the unit and take the fan housing strip (which holds 2 very low profile small fans). I attached the strip with zip ties to the retaining ring from the H70/50 and on the top to the radiator itself. Sorry no pics, but you should be able to improvise to make it work. The fans have plenty of room between the H70/50 pump and the VREG heatsink. It is attached blowing directly into the side of the VREG heatsink towards the rear of the case. Added bonus are several blue led lights already on the fan strip... My reuslts may not be typical because of the large number of fans in my case but my temps average 40 C or less for VREG temp. Good luck, hope this helps...
