Client -> Add a new client
Location: <Enter the location that the virtual machine shows you on startup, just above the login>
Check "Client is on a Virtual Machine"
 
The virtual machine will tell you what to enter for the location including the IP address.

looks like mr. murphy found his way to croatia, after changing faulty biostar mobo with new gigabyte ex58 extreme (unfortunatly, evga has no longer distrybuter in croatia) hoping that all will work ok, my gtx260 died (luckily rma it another day and got replaced), but new one won't work stable at 1566 mhz shader as old :(
also got two bsods today and still no bigadv wu's for me :(((

i hate you mr. murphy, go back where you come from :)))

i didn't even look, to angry, just pressed reset button :D maybe i juiced cpu little bit to much with voltage :) now trying at lover values, if by morning all works ok, that's it, if bsod i will take a photo of it :)

anywayz, thx for tutorial, been using this kind of folding ever since you posted virtualbox setup, now switched to vmware, i rised my avg ppd for cca 2000 on cpu folding vs. 3 notfreds :)

Excellent LR, Ill make a routine for my HP 11c That will do the calculation by just  inputing the TPF. In fact you practically spelled out the routine Steps almost perfectly, for HP Calculator Programming Language.

 
Sounds good. I may eventually look at setting up a small Javascript web page for the calculation.


A distributable Java script Would be a Big hit!!

Hey LR. Just wanted to say thanks for the guide. It took me a little longer to get it all up and running. I had to learn how to overclock first(never done it before)....I got my 920 to 4.0ghz stable after a few days. Took care of my 10 wu's and now i'm 27% through my first -bigadv. I'm getting 33:30 tpf and my temps average 70c...74c max.

If you go to Kakao stats and look at our teams average points per wu. Its gone up considerably since you posted this thread. Our old average never really went above the 500's. The other day we hit 865 in an update! And we seem to hit the 600's easily. That just goes to show you how many people have followed your thread.

Yeah it does need a good part of available resources to run. The memory usage is high when you combine VMWare with the memory the host Windows OS and applications uses. On the CPU-side, one core is left unused which helps some.

Thanks. Glad you are up and running and that you got your i7 to 4.0 GHz. 33:30 is excellent TPF. That is close to what some get in native Linux with the i7 and 8-cores. Hopefully the trend for the points per wu will continue.

I like to fold from bash mainly to save memory. X-Windows and a window manager uses up some memory and maybe even a bit of CPU resources. I keep my native Linux folders running in bash shell as well since I am running CPU only folding. Total memory usage from other processes aside from folding is fairly low at around 23MB on average.

I been folding from x-window since I went -bigadv
But Let me see how the performace is plus see how the performace is for you image
Cause I'm still waiting on Win 7 to come in and I'm just not waiting any longer people are gaining on me
since I haven't been folding to my full potential
Plus I been like working 60 hours haha no time to check on the rigs

Which I been trying to get for a while.
I down clock my system to 3.8
but I'm going to be bumping it back to the 3.96-4.0 range again
I will be folding in command line now :)

Gees, this transition is really putting a hurt on communication right now. Any way just an update. I finished and picked up a new -bigadv WU yesterday but it was stuck at the command line Entering M.D. run. I had to restart it I think 2 times before it would actually start processing the WU although the processor usage was showing 96% even when it was stuck. I am still running the original disk image. I am planning on getting another i7 920 for my Rig 2 and put the second version of the -bigadv on it and see if it runs with less intervention on my part. Iwill keep yo updated. 


Sometimes the client will not post an update until it gets done with the first 1 or 2 percent. I have seen this on my native Linux folders before.
 
How many have you gotten done so far?
 
v1 and 2 have the same client. The main thing I added in v2 is the web configuration for simplified setup.

Just an FYI
For you new -bigadv guys (me especially)
after the VM finished and picked up a new 25400 unit it did not post untill 2% into the new WU or 76 minutes.
But the core use % was at 100 the whole time....so I knew it was doing something
Was comtemplating restarting, but glad I didn't.

I'm having a little problem with one of my GPU's it dowmclocks every once in a while, I can fix it by doing a restart BUT I lose my progress with vmware when I restart.  It wasn't a big deal today because I was only 2% on a 1920 (trying to finish my 10). However, it will be an issue when I'm running the bigadv. Is there a way for me to save my progress before I restart?

i had same problem with all newer drivers than 186.x when video driver crashes, it locks gpu to 2d clocks
try 186.18 gpu driver, with them when my gpu crashes, it does not go into 2d mode

Most of the time you can hit CTRL+C and then shutdown the VM (shutdown -h now). Upon starting up again, the folding client will start from where it left off. On occasion a file will become corrupted and a new unit will be downloaded. I found that most of the time this does not happen though at least in VM.
 
Otherwise something like this might work for backing up the data. I have not tested this so I do not know how well it will work.
 
ALT+F2
Login again with the same login info shown in the guide
cp -a work work.bak
ALT+F1
CTRL+C (to exit the folding client)
Wait 20 seconds and shutdown -h now
 
When you get the VM started again and logged in, you can copy the backup work directory back to the main one.
 
cp -a work.bak work
rm -R work.bak
./fah6 -bigadv -smp 7

Ok I finally got this setup. Had to drop my oc from 4.2Ghz to 4 to lower my voltage due to temps. Luckily I have my water cooling gear here, just need to modify my case.

29 min TPF is great. Is that native or in VM?

That is native on the custom kernel that I downloaded a while back I never gotten that before
Now I finally get some bonus on cause I only run my system for 8 hours a day ahh

Over at folding forum, I got info from brentpresley that the reason 8-core bigadv crashes is because there was not enough memory allocated. I started another test run this time with 4600MB allocated to the virtual machine. So far the unit has been running stable with 8-cores. I do not have much run time yet, but in the past when I tried it, the client crashed almost instantly so it is an improvement over what I have seen in the past.



For those limited on memory or needing the memory for other apps, it may still be best to stick with 7-cores. I only have around 620MB of free memory in Windows running 8-cores bigadv.

That could work with having a large enough swap file or Ready boost.
 
I actually did not notice much performance difference in the host operating while running the folding client with 8-cores in a virtual machine. My GPU client also did okay while running the CPU client.

I lost 33% of a new bigadv this morning because I can't leave well enough alone.

Messing around with memory allocation trying to get the 8 core to run instead of 7.

Corrupted the file and it started over...so I understand chumbucket

bigadv just hates me so much. on linux i never got credit for my WU's, my comp crashed and deleted a 70% done WU and now it wont load your image and i am restoring it from earlier and will see if it works. wish me luck:X
edit: same problem. the pic might take some time to load. 



If I had to guess, I would say there is probably a lock file that was left in place after the system crashed. Can you show me a listing of the files in your FAH directory that has the VMX file?
