Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070 PWM Operating Temperature Update 2016/11/03 14:31:56 (permalink)
Just an FYI. I ran the bios update for the primary bios on my 08G-P4-6276-KR GTX 1070 card and ran into a weird issue.

I ran the update, everything went fine. No errors. The command prompt disappeared. I wait a few minutes for everything to settle down and make sure that there wasn't anything else about to happen. Nothing did after about a minute.

As the instructions stated, I rebooted. Upon coming back up, everything was defaulted back to an abysmal resolution. PrecisionX stated that there was no hardware detected, and no Nvidia Control Panel. I attempted to run the BIOS update again and it hung for a while and dropped a few errors, which I neglected to get a screenshot thinking the primary BIOS had been pooched.

I shut my PC down and did a cold boot. Everything recovered fine at that point.

Not sure if this was the intended "restart" mentioned in the instructions, but if a cold boot is necessary, you might want to clarify that.

EDIT - clarification here as well, after the cold boot (and now warm boot), things have remained stable. The BIOS shown in the Nvidia Control Panel indicates the proper one.

2nd EDIT - Using a single GTX 1070 with dual displays (one via HDMI, one via DVI). When doing the update, and the "blank screen" mentioned, only my HDMI connected monitor came back. When I rebooted the first time after the update, my DVI was the only one connected and it was at a basic default resolution. After the cold boot, I got both monitors back. I keep thinking of details that might matter.

3rd EDIT - just went back a page or two and noticed one of the moderators mentioning disabling the driver before doing the update. If the driver causes issues with resolution and such when doing a BIOS update, it might be worth adding that into the instructions on HOW to disable that so n00bz like me don't freak out when stuff happens. :-P

Well i ran the update.exe didnt work the 1st time, couldnt find GPU to update. Closed it, ran it a 2nd time, this time it detected a GPU. Next a prompt of what to expect to happen applying the update. Couldnt read it fast enough, because within 2-4 seconds my screen just went blank. I didnt even get to type "y" or anything to approve the update, now im just sitting at a blank no signal monitor screen, afraid to turn off my pc.

EDIT**

Okay, so after sitting at no signal screen for about 3-5 minutes, i just blindingly hit the letter "y" on my keyboard, about 5 seconds later, my signal returned, and i check GPU-Z to see it did update the BIOs. That was a scary and strange process.

I hope you chose the correct update file.

That's what has been said. It also includes the previous bios fix, the Micron issue one.

Did you close all running Programs?
Did you Right Click on the file and select Run as administrator?
After it runs you need to restart the computer to see the new bios.

Yes, ran as admin. It updated with hitting "Y" on my keyboard at a no signal screen for a few minutes and within seconds my signal returned and bios was updated.

Correct me if I am wrong, but where I come from changing something(BIOS-Fan Operation) with the card that contradicts what is on the box -is called false advertising. Even if it fixes the issues on the box it says 1 "400% longer life" 2 "Quieter operation" 3 "Cooler GPU" 4 "Increased airflow and cooler looks".

The only thing this changes in >some circumstances< is the "Quieter operation". The rest is still the same. I can live with 200 rpm+- change.

Ok, I'm sick of this crap. You all sound like a bunch of whiney, hungry, spoiled babies. Sorry to everyone that has experienced misfortune, cards sparking, blown cards(I don't mean you!). Everyone except a few are rude, entitled, and some aren't very intelligent. If you are unhappy, return the card for a full refund if you can, otherwise shush.....eVGA is not obligated to give us anything. They are doing it because they are committed to customer satisfaction. They could have told us all to eff off and left us high and dry without bios updates/ and / or FREE thermal pads. Once and for all, this has to stop! Be grateful they are trying to help us because we are staying loyal to them as customers. If you don't like it, get your money back and buy from another AIB vendor. Every other post is someone wanting a free backplate or free hybrid kit, etc. "Please sir, may I have some more?"
Enough is enough, this is getting ridiculous already.
To the mods: I apologize but I've had enough! I accept full responsibility for any infractions I may receive.

I admit that the increased noise is incredibly frustrating for me. I really go out of my way to choose quiet components. The latest tests are showing 47dB when under load...that's really loud for a computer fan.

Also, this is going to decrease fan life over time. I've already had fans fail on other cards after a couple of years and this is going to speed that along.

47db on what load?
Fans are rated for 3k rpm. It'll maybe hit 2k for few games. Besides, these fans shut down when not in use. They will outlive your card's usage.

I actually suspect that if they did nothing, there may have been a class action suit as more cards failed. Or a full recall if it became unprofitable for them to keep replacing cards.

I'm glad to see EVGA taking action, and I agree that most other companies would not have been so quick to do it, but I understand the frustration on the consumer side.

My card shot fire out of it and died. I now have a refurb as a replacement and I still have to put pads on it and update a BIOS that's going to make it twice as loud...

The very test that EVGA themselves linked shows the noise was 38dB with the old BIOS and 47dB with the new.

Yeah, I get it about being frustrated. The whole forum is over-run by frustrated people ATM. Rightly so. This isn't going away any time soon. I'm happy to see eVGA working so hard to make things right. Then again, you can't please everyone.

Yeah i've been checking my email constantly, get emails pushed anyway so... But I just dont get why they're flat out ignoring me about my RMA and other issues too.. It's been weeks since i heard anything from them. I might just have to buy thermal pads myself and live with the coil whine and high core temps i guess..

Would it be a good idea to run the BIOS update in Windows Safe Mode? That way no other processes can mistakenly affect the update.

Safe mode is fine, I used to do that when flashing custom 970 bios.

Two. Currently only the primary is available.

If you have no intentions of ever running the secondary BIOS than you only need to flash one.

If you have more than one card, do you need to make sure only one GPU is installed at a time when flashing the bios? I'm guessing that's best even if it might not be required per say, but I'd like to know.
