VBIOS updated on 08G-P4-6173-KR/KB - 1070 SC, my first VBIOS flash, quick and easy so far so good. Just wanted to say thanks to EVGA for their efforts in correcting this issue amongst all the drama and thanks to those who've kept a level head and worked as a community to try and aid others situations. Thermal pads awaiting shipment. Will update if I run into any issues on the new VBIOS in the meantime.

Oh well...tried three times to update bios...first time, the Command prompt just closed immediately. Then made sure all programs were closed and ran in Administrator mode...command prompt opened...recognized my card and then closed. Never given an option to type Y. Then tried in safe mode...nada. Guess I will keep using Afterburner and keep my aggressive fan profile.

akteni Thank you, regarding #3, I was asking distance between parts not the pad thickness because I suspect that it is less than pad thickness because pads are very soft and manufacturers are relying flexibility to squeeze pads for better contact. If I use glued pad (0.15mm) + copper plate (0.5mm) + glued pad (0.15mm), actual distance matters. I am sensitive about these due to my r&d job in automotive company as engine cooling engineer.
In that case being an engineer you probably have access to a micrometer. I install copper shims in tablets etc alot but i do not have one on me or i would help. The termal pads they send look like EK ones so i guess it's 3,0-5,0 W/mK wich is fine with copper plates.
Micrometer will not fit in between vrm and heatsink but can measure distance to backplate.

No fan noise here at all after updating VBios. You are just guessing/hoping. Negative thoughts......Get a job and a life.

EVGA_JacobF EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070/1060 BIOS Update
- 08G-P4-6286-KR - EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW ACX 3.0 - Primary BIOS (86.04.3b.00.84) | Secondary BIOS Coming Soon
This doesn't work. Checked this s/n against that on the side of the box... yes. Set BIOS to Primary... yes. Ran the update... yes. Rebooted... yes. Check bios revision in NV Control Panel and GPU Z... yes. Everything checks out. Except the fans don't spin. Nada, Zilch. Nothing. Dead still. Not a damn thing. Had to switch to the Slave BIOS to get the fans spinning at all. Afterburner was the only thing stopping the card from dying a fiery death. What a bloody shambles. If you think I'm going to brick the secondary bios too when it comes out you've got another thing coming!
Primary has a 0db mode so fans will not spin unless you put a custom fan curve or switch it to slave. This is nothing new.

I'm actually worried about fan noise. What exactly is changed with this vbios? Could I try the newfan curve settings with PrecisionX software before installing the vbios update?

AdamInk I really hope you are right... because if I really need them with no overclocking and an agressive curve fan, I think those pads are definitively not an option... If you and i or someone else really need them or everyone EVGA would said that you have to do it, you have to aply the pads. However they said in the statement its an -option- for thoose who wants additional cooling :)
They can't say something else. "Oversigh"t and "optional" don't go together. The lack of thermal pads between the VRAM and VRM components and the heatsink was an "oversight" and the thermal pads must be/place there from the beginning (the correct statement, and then you see a massive recalls/refunds)

Shift209 So if I replaced my 1070 FTW would I be receiving a new card with the thermal pads and VBIOS update? Or am I getting a refurbished card that someone else sent in and you guys slapped the pads on? I'm sure this has been answered but I've only read through a few pages and it is difficult to sort through anything. I'm probably worrying more about this than I should, but I'd rather not have a short-lifespan card or have any other issues arise in the couple of years I plan to stick with this card. I'm also not very comfortable with opening it up.
As far as I know they will give a re-certified/refurbished card. Which I am not satisfied with. I'm dealing with EVGA at the moment and fight for new cards. Also they will not send me cards with the added VRM pads on....
That's extremely disappointing. Guess I'll just request the thermal pads if that's the case and look elsewhere for my next big video card purchases.

I'm not a GPU speciallist, and I feel very uncomfortable with those thermal issues. Where do I must look to check if my VRAM is correctly protected with thermal pads (no gaps)? Is EVGA going to make another tutorial to help people like me to change pads on VRAM? For now I' a little bit disappointed with my purchase... Buzzing noise from the gpu (fps capped), howling noise from the fans, thermal issues, it makes a lot of problem IMO.

Have you tried downloading the VBIOS update again? Perhaps it got corrupted during download? I know its unlikely considering how short the download is, but just trying to think of what it could be. Sorry you are having problems.

I dont like the bios update, its a good first step but seriously the sound level will be terrible. Watch this (around 6:30) [tube]https://youtube.com/watch?v=qZ0eAylzl0o[/tube] Using the thermal pad the card will be much cooler without the fan going crazy. EVGA should do RMA and also apply the thermal pads. I dont want to do that myself. I have already made a RMA request. If this is such a great company as people use to say it will be accepted. I did not pay this much for a loud card like the video shows. With the pads the card is what it should have been from the start. Its up to proof now if EVGA has a good customer service.

From what I heard a moderator point out earlier in the thread you need to use tube not youtube to embed the video you are attempting to embed

Jesus, this thing is starting to look like a huge mess. So much information/miss-information in this thread. EVGA, all I wanted was an awesome card. Instead my 1080 classified is starting to look like a $750 liability. While I am technically capable to perform the bios update and thermal pad fixes EVGA is asking, I feel that I should not have do mess with this after paying for such a premium product. With that, I requested an RMA with a completely new card. I am still within my 30 days of purchase from MC. I am monitoring how this thread is developing today/tomorrow and weighing my options. Right now, I am fairly close to just returning my card and getting something else from another manufacturer.

Luta Wicasa Bob...you're bios isn't even up yet......
I realized it when I double checked my part number. I did a step up and originally EVGA offered me the upgrade to 6183, so I had the PN stuck in my head. With the wait going on three months, I backtracked to the original step up to 6181. When I saw the bios upgrade...I kept thinking 6183...my mistake.

vampyren I dont like the bios update, its a good first step but seriously the sound level will be terrible. Watch this (around 6:30) www. youtube.com/watch?v=qZ0eAylzl0o Using the thermal pad the card will be much cooler without the fan going crazy.

What is tube? is it not allowed to put youtube link? (if so sorry for that, that was just a great video with facts i think people would have interest in).

I really hope you are right... because if I really need them with no overclocking and an agressive curve fan, I think those pads are definitively not an option...
If you and i or someone else really need them or everyone EVGA would said that you have to do it, you have to aply the pads. However they said in the statement its an -option- for thoose who wants additional cooling :)
If it is an option, EVGA will be fine, If a user don't apply any BIOS nor install the pads, nor send it back to apply both. One is untitled to not take any if they are OPTIONS. (Also do you see the word "need" when they say "* Founders Edition, Blower type, HYBRID, and HYDRO COPPER cards do not need these updates."...meaning the others DO NEED.) My little finger tells me that EVGA is not comfortable AT ALL with this scenario, knowing that the card WILL burn down in few months, that's a lot of RMA to come.

@:ivadjon I totally agree, bios update is fine but for such a premium card i should not have to take it appart and do what they ask us to do even if they claim its optional. All the videos i seen shows that the thermal pads make a huge difference keeping the heat down and without the fan going extremly loud. The whole point when i selected this card was the quiet fans. Now with this bios it can go up to 2200rpm which is crazy. Normally i goes to 1600RPM and with the pads it will be around 86 degree which is totally fine. Hopefully my RMA will also be approved so i can swap this for a new card with the thermal pads. Otherwise its going back to the shop.
