I'm so lazy I don't even want to power down my computer to update the master bios xD
When it arrives I'll probably apply both - Until then I'm going to take a break from reading anything but the OP.
It's annoying to dissect page after page of drama and whine while trying to find some useful information or legitimate "gripe".
Whine level 99 achieved. Congrats.

So if I replaced my 1070 FTW would I be receiving a new card with the thermal pads and VBIOS update? Or am I getting a refurbished card that someone else sent in and you guys slapped the pads on? I'm sure this has been answered but I've only read through a few pages and it is difficult to sort through anything.

I'm probably worrying more about this than I should, but I'd rather not have a short-lifespan card or have any other issues arise in the couple of years I plan to stick with this card. I'm also not very comfortable with opening it up.

Ran the utility on my 08G-P4-6276-KR. Looks like it was a success.

Will install the pads as soon as I get them.

Every bios update requires the driver to be shut off for the update, so that was why everything went all crazy scaling on you. That is normal, and when you are doing your own flash, you have to disable the driver in the device manager window yourself. This just does all the work, minus a press of the Y button.

How do I disable the driver.

You don't have to do it manually. Just follow the guide in the first page.

They claim the pads are optional after the new vbios.
But keep this in mind. The new fan curve in the new bios dropped the VRM temps from 114c to 95c in some tests on a GTX 1080 FTW. The thermal pads alone dropped the VRM temps to 85c. Get the pads is my recomendation. Those thermal pads were supposed to be there from the start.

I have GTX 1080 classy and i don't have any problems so far classy models has much better designed PCB than FTW and has 7 Celsius degree less than FTW model without any modifications. But I'm waiting for thermal pads and new bios and I'm gonna upgrade all necessary so my card time life is gonna be better.

So I see all these bios part numbers end with KR, does that mean BR part number people need to wait for a new bios specifically for them?

  • 08G-P4-6286-KR - EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW ACX 3.0 - Primary BIOS (86.04.3b.00.84) | Secondary BIOS Coming Soon
  • This doesn't work.

Checked this s/n against that on the side of the box... yes. Set BIOS to Primary... yes. Ran the update... yes. Rebooted... yes. Check bios revision in NV Control Panel and GPU Z... yes. Everything checks out.

Except the fans don't spin. Nada, Zilch. Nothing. Dead still. Not a damn thing. Had to switch to the Slave BIOS to get the fans spinning at all. Afterburner was the only thing stopping the card from dying a fiery death.

What a bloody shambles. If you think I'm going to brick the secondary bios too when it comes out you've got another thing coming!

If you see any hardware problems with your 1080 ftw, artifacts, black screen, anything, start rma don't lose time to found out whats wrong...Life is to short to found out what is wrong with somebody problems. Evga make bad mistakes on project ACX 3.0 now they have to pay for it, or lose they reputations. I always buy EVGA products and i loved how the service works.

I've already had a black screen lasted about 5 seconds thats what prompted me to update the bios. I'm already out of DSR returns time I have wait for the card to explode into flames before I can RMA it as I understand it.

No you don't have wait until card explode. Contact EVGA service tell them what is the problem .

Alright, got it, cheers buddy. I think I'm going to go down that route.

Im aware that the new fan curve provided by the new VBIOS' varies depending on card but generally seems to have increased the RPM from 1600 to 2000 correct? If someone was to set up a custom fan curve however instead of using the VBIOS version when should the fan reach this 2000 RPM for the 08G-P4-6173-KR (1070 SC)? Would this occur at 65C which ive heard was where the fans kicked on for 1600RPM? Or were they lower at 65C and gradually increased to 1600RPM over the course of temperature increase? Just curious as there seems to be literally zero information concerning the prior fan curve outside of it turns on at 65C or so and maxes out at 1600RPM or something. Thanks.

Since people were asking I did a quick, non-scientific comparison of the fan profile for my 1080 SC. Keep in mind polling times, so the numbers won't be exact. And if the overall RPM was also increased with the BIOS these percentages won't be apples to apples. But here you go:

My custom profile was basically 1'C = 1% fan after 65-70'C.. so even this new profile is far less aggressive then what I chose myself.

As far as I know they will give a re-certified/refurbished card. Which I am not satisfied with. I'm dealing with EVGA at the moment and fight for new cards. Also they will not send me cards with the added VRM pads on....

Awesome, thanks for this. While like you said many factors skew accuracy here, this is still very helpful. Im assuming you didn't happen to notice if your RPM's matched at a given percentage between the two given "And if the overall RPM was also increased with the BIOS these percentages won't be apples to apples.". Though I wouldn't assume they would have changed the max given there is still so much room in the original profile and even this slightly more aggressive one. Either way, thanks again.

EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070/1060 BIOS Update

  • Yet most of us with the identical card are running the bios without issue. It's not like you received something different or there's something specific about your card.

When you say the fans don't spin is that at idle or what? Do you have a custom fan curve setup?
