Trying to install Windows. I followed the tutorial and the BIOS doesn't see the M.2 drive. I'm using BIOS v2.03.
Am I missing a setting somewhere?

With the original SSD plugged in Windows does see it, but as a SCSI drive?

Make sure you follow the instructions to allow the detection of M.2 in the BIOS of the board.

Bios will not show the M.2 Drive until there is an MBR associated with it.

Is your boot set to UEFI? Does the M.2 show in the windows install manager?

The drive may also not appear in the Windows installation prompt until you have loaded the RST driver so make sure to have that ready as well once you have confirmed the settings to be correct in BIOS.

Man...this is almost like retro install issues with SSDs. I'm sure with time this will be equivalent to using an SSD.

Even if it is detected as SCSi device it'll work properly. Unless you want to use that drive as boot drive don't worry that BIOS can't see it. Windows Protected Mode is much more advanced device-detection-wise than any BIOS or UEFI.

On PC (W7) from which I write this all NVMe devices are "SCSI" devices. Normal SSDs too but these are connected to RAID controller and by default are labelled SCSI. Unfortunately installing 7 on NVMe is a bit iffy at best.

Out of curiosity - what system you trying to install? For W7 Samsung didn't released any new drivers - 1.4.7.17 is last which you can use during system installation (F6 style - 'I have disk'). After that all drivers are delivered in solid package (exe) which you have to run from system already installed.

Ohhhh....What OS wasn't in his post. I had to go look and see in another thread he's installing Win 7. Yeah...not really sure why with a shiny new system, with new features and an OS to take advantage of  it...but...that is just me.

I'm installing Windows 7 Pro 64bit retail, to clear up any confusion. I could install Windows 10 but I want 7. Windows 10 and Linux will be VM's.

I did everything the FAQ pointed out.

    http://forums.evga.com/X99-M2-Getting-it-to-work-STEP-BY-STEP-m2476830.aspx

When I get to the install. Windows doesn't see any drives. I click on load driver and then my thumb drive. All the drivers I found for this drive are .exe files so it doesn't work. Where is the actual driver?
With everything set to UEFI as shown in the link above, I can see my DVD drive, network boot and the thumb drive under "UEFI Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities", but no M.2 or "windows boot manager" in "boot option one". I'm not sure of the differences between my motherboard (X99 Classified) and a X99 Micro 2 (which is what the tutorial shows).

I'm going to try again, this time capturing screenshots of my settings in BIOS so I can show what I'm actually seeing.

You could found inf drivers at this link http://www.win-raid.com/t29f25-Recommended-AHCI-RAID-and-NVMe-Drivers.html
Expand Spoiler under Samsung NVMe Drivers and you will found links to 32 and 64 bit inf drivers for Windows 7

Does anybody else have any ideas? I saved the driver that Lazy posted to a thumb drive. I followed both the FAQ and tutorial on this site. There must be a setting I'm missing, have set incorrectly or there is a step that's out of order for my motherboard/M.2 drive combo. I know the drive and M.2 port both work. Should I try again using an older BIOS?

    Hi Harry.

I stumble over this guide how to install Windows 7 on a NVMe drive and hope that will help you.
You could skip the part of how to get USB 3 support during installation from USB thumb drive.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/guide-installing-windows-7-on-an-nvme-ssd-from-a-usb-3-0-thumbdrive.783921/

It is for notebook but could give you a clue how to do this unsupported installation of Windows 7.

On a side note as I forgot about that earlier. On my 2 X99 Classifieds, 512G 950 Pro are detected just fine (using this adapter for all my NVME M.2s - https://www.aquatuning.de/water-cooling/hdd-ram-cooler/hdd-water-blocks/20878/aquacomputer-kryom.2-pcie-3.0-x4-adapter-fuer-m.2-ngff-pcie-ssd-m-key-mit-passivkuehler) in the BIOS and in the system. Just pure P&P, never had to set anything in the UEFI. Using it as data drive but never had any issues with detection.

I think it's easier configuring them as storage drives versus main OS drives.  From my experience to get the M.2 to work, was a big hassle.

Nonetheless, these are the steps I followed to get it to work.  Of course this is for a Samsung XP941.  Not sure if these same steps would work but why not try.

Thanks GTXJack. One more thing for me to add to my tutorial list. One of these should allow me to install Windows.

If it doesn't see it in BIOS or during drive selection while installing Windows, would clicking on "have driver" have any effect or will it say no drives present or something like that?

If your BIOS does Not see the M2 - time to reinstall it and confirm it is fully seated if the option is On in BIOS

Only Win 8.1 & 10 have native support, so even after the MB sees the M2, you have an uphill battle

Technically your problem may be right there. 950Pro is a device which requires Gen.3 connectivity for full compatibility. By placing it in Gen.2 slot by definition you may run into issues. From what I gather since obtaining first Classy, M.2 slot on the board is very quirky entity - main reason why I don't use it.

Problem with not detected drive is that even if OS installation (have a disk) is successful, you can't pick Windows Boot Manager in the boot order. Something that doesn't matter for a data drive which is handled later by WPM.

Bottom line..... Get a new Motherboard if you want full M.2 SSD support! This board just doesn't have it! I am looking at the new Asus, MSI and Gigabyte boards right now.

It seems more like a Samsung Proprietary issue then a Motherboard issued.

Why is the drive seen in Windows just fine?

Not sure, I can see the drive as a secondary drive after the OS is installed.
But with a Clean Drive no mater how or on what computer I have I could not get Window 7 to see the 960/950 Pro Drives.
I have read Posts over on ASUS Forum as well.
This may be a Support Ticket Call into Samsung but once you say Windows 7 they just stop.

Both my rigs are Intel(R) Xeon(R) v3/4th Gen Core processor PCI Express x16 Controller
Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Series PCI Express or Intel C610 series and Intel C620 series
Who knows at this point other then they do not support MBR form what I can tell.
And because we want Windows 7 that add a hole new realm.
I think we are going to see more and more issues with Windows 7 as we go forward.
I have tried to install Windows 98SE on new hardware and ended up giving up.

I have Friday off so that gives me three days to try and get this working.
If I can't get it to work, maybe a 960 Pro or 850 Evo will work?

I'm definitely not buying another motherboard. I'll buy another M.2 drive and use the 950 Pro in my HTPC.

The BIOS now sees my Samsung 950 Pro 512GB M.2 SSD.
I just installed a new HP printer. I made sure it worked and then updated the firmware. I then thought about the M.2 drive. I opened Samsung Magician and saw that the firmware needed updating on both of my SSD's. I did the M.2 first because that's the one I was most concerned about. I rebooted the computer, and messed around with BIOS settings.

"Launch Storage Op-Rom" has to be set to Legacy.

Here is the old firmware for my M.2 SSD

Wow congrats.  Now, is this the OS drive or a storage drive?  My guess you made it storage to go through all of that.
