I'm about to embark on the triple screen journey for the first time. I currently have an ASUS VG248QE, and I have a couple of questions:

1. Would it be fine to purchase a different model monitor for the two screens I'm adding to the one I already have? I'm looking at the ASUS MG248Q?
2. I have a GTX 1080 Strix, what would be the best way to connect the three monitors? One DVI, and two DisplayPorts I'm assuming?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Your goal is a surround setup ?

That's a neat find! I guess my question is - is there a benefit to any certain configuration? Would HDMI be better than using DisplayPort or vice versa?

Mostly depends on your hardware - Monitor and cables

Make sure you buy certified DP cable -- yes it really matters, and certified does not mean they have to be expensive

DP has the ability to move more data and has a small fitting on the end, easy to pull around obstacles

I'm using: Accell B142C-010B UltraAV DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 Cable with Latches - 10 Feet (3 Meters) < $20.00 USD

    Amazon LINK

All products in the database bearing the DisplayPort logo have been tested against strict guidelines to ensure they will work as advertised. Only products that undergo testing are permitted to carry the DP logo.

    Thanks for the link!

As far as using different monitors (the MG248Q seems very similar to my VG248QE) for the 2 additional monitors, would there be any issues other than aesthetics?

Are you still expecting to have higher than 60Hz for your surround setup? I am afraid if you have mix of monitors you may not get the higher frequency. Is this strictly for gaming? I am running 3x 27" 2560x1440 monitors and some games support it, some don't. For productivity it is awesome. However, for gaming the experience is, well, different.

I am actually thinking of switching to 1x27" and 1x 34" monitor.

Best to connect all three with displayport. If you use DVI, that will be the primary display when booting (Bios screen).

My 1080 only has 2 DisplayPort ports - so I guess I can get a DisplayPort to DVI, or HDMI?

That is an odd 1080 as I thought they all come with 3 DP, 1 HDMI and 1 DVI-D. Anyway, use HDMI first if not available then DVI-D as either is fine.

Yeah, the ASUS STRIX version comes with 2 HDMI, and 2 DisplayPort inputs. Would it be feasible to get something like this for a splitter?

Why do you need to do that? VG248QE comes with HDMI. Just use it. A splitter will give you more problems to troubleshoot.

I just didn't know if I would notice any abnormalities using two DPs and one HDMI. I'm actually not sticking with the VG248QE, I bought 3 Asus - ROG SWIFT PG248Q. I'm selling my VG248QE to a friend of mine.

So, I guess I'll use DP for two of the monitors and one HDMI.
