had an old board that didn't work so I put it in the oven for a while. All the plastic parts melted (cmos battery holder thing, and cpu mount), whoops. It was an old compaq that my parents had. Surprisingly, it now works again and is pictured complete with allen-wrench-power-button.

idk if you would consider this ghetto, but my case fans were...none existent... so I found a fan I bought when I was in Korea that computer lasted me from...5th grade till...well...it's my back up's backup... still runs, still has that stupid fan after 5 moves cross country




I was made a cannibal to fix problems like you

Ghetto for computers?  Like Nate said, it's necessity to make it work!

Here's a recent one.

I had a power supply going out on me - the 12v lead that tells the mobo the power supply passed all of its tests wasn't passing the right voltage.  I guess that indicated my power supply actually was failing.

Anyways - I took two AA batteries and supplied the voltage to that lead to jump start the computer.  Once it turned on, you could remove the voltage and it would stay running.  It was fine as long as I didn't turn it off, until I got a new power supply.

I thought that was ghetto, but I don't think ghetto enough to beat the best here!

Dude you were lucky it did not destroy something... Either the mobo could have fried or the AA could explode, if done wrong.

But obviously you got it to work so good for you!

lol, I had nothing to lose :)  I knew the voltage the mobo was looking for, and had a multimeter that told me it wasn't supplying the correct voltage to boot up.  The gray wire tells the motherboard that the power supply is OK to power up.  Like I said, besides that lead, the rest were supplying good steady voltage when powered on, I'm still not sure what the deal is with it.

It was just annoying because my PC was running 24/7, then I had to shut it down to move it and it wouldn't turn on.
