Well, the 750i FTW mb got the C1 code, memory fault, non-boot issue and she is now dead and won't post. I tried everything and nothing worked. So, now since I have to get another mb anyway, now's the time to upgrade. I'm thinking I5 quad, P55 and ddr3. Thoughts?

Actually the fan noise is quite loud. Those four 80mm fans really purr.

Re:The Tool Box LAN Party Rig 2010/03/31 09:55:04 (permalink)
Here is the rebuild log.

The 750i-FTW board took a crap, see the above post for details.

I took the opportunity to update my gear to a i5-750, P55 mainboard,4GB of DDR3 RAM and Windows 7 64 bit. Everything else is the same.

I started with an affordable no brainer with the i5-750 quad core.

I searched for and found a great replacement board in the MSI P55 GD65. Here it is.

I traded my E8500 back to Joey for 4Gb of DDR3 RAM. He almost has that think to 6Ghz. Amazing.

Enjoy the pics

Ram clearance was a little close but it fit

On my 750i mainboard had SATA connections parallel to the board, so does this one but they are upside down when compared to the 750i board. The right ended SATA cable went down when connected to the 750i board but goes up when connected to the MSI board. Ya know, you’d think that this was some kind of standard in the MB industry.  I made a big deal about the direction of my SATA cable when I first built the TB but now I don’t care. It’s going up this time.

What’s cool about this board is that it is blue which matches my color scheme. I’ll get pics fully assembled later.

That was a big concern when I started to reassemble everything but luckily the 24 pin was long enough. That was a big sigh of relief. I have everything up and running and will get more pics soon.

This has to be the most innovative LAN case I've even seen. And probably doesn't weigh much more then a toolbox full of tools.

Case: NZXT S340
Mobo: MSI Z87 G45
Video: EVGA GTX 780ti SC
Proc: Intel i5 4670k @ 4ghz
Ram: 2x4GB G.skill TridentX 2400mhz
PSU: Antec 650w
Drive: 256GB Samsung 840 Pro

Looking real nice man, I especially like the blue theme.  If those sata cables do end up really bothering you, they do make cables that angle the other way.  I will see if I can find a link that shows the difference between right and left 90 degree sata cables.

With that new I5 750 we should be able to smash zombie face with frying pans at record speeds!

I forgot to add the list of games. We play L4d1 and L4d2, DOW 1, a little combat arms. We try new ones all the time.

I have right and left cables at home but I didn't feel like sleeving another right now. I may do it later but for now it's fine.

I do prefer the ninja sword right now but the baseball bat gets a nice thud sound. Although you cannot deny the ring of the frying pan.

What really made this mod worthy of a gaming rig was that 9.5" size of the GTS250s. If those card wouldn't have fit, it would have sucked. Nothing longer will fit.

thanks for the compliments.

Awesome Mod...

You said that the fans make a lot of noise. This could be from vibrations. You could always try picking up some fan vibration dampeners to try to get rid of some of that noise. They are very cheap and work pretty well.

I will look into it. It does sounds like wind noise tho. They are running at full speed. Have you had luck quieting fan with these? Just curious.

Hit or Miss... They seem to have made my older chassis with 80mm fans quieter. But a newer chassis with a friends rig with 120mm fans, I didn't notice a difference, granted I have no testing equipment and just went by ear. But they were cheap and the concept behind them would lead me to believe they should work.
