woot so ocz freeze was a decent purchase from compusa (it was either that or the generic crap)

It's a candidate for the best.  Performs slightly better than AC MX-2 from my testing (therefore better than AS5 which I have also tested), very easy to spread like MX-2, not capacitive like MX-2, no curing time like MX-2.  I'm trying MX-3 next.

it could be that you did not put enough. if u put a PC amount (even adjusted for size of die) it may not be enough as the heatsinks are not even at all so you are filling the gap where with cpu ones ur just trying to fill microscopic holes/imperfections etc

what if i think its too much, it covers the die and theres a ton on the heatsink when i pull it off

hard to say in these situations with uneven heatsinks. and unknown gaps. :(

It COULD be that the grooves in the heatsink aren't being filled. If you power down, remove the card, and get the shroud and heatsink off, and take a look at the underside of the heatsink, what you should see is that the GPU is still covered in the arctic silver 5, but the heatsink would also have a decent amount on it and in the grooves above where the GPU would be. If those grooves aren't filled, you didn't put enough.

ok when i opened it up again the heatsink fell out without a tug. and it didnt fill in any gaps i aded more in and now itsmax at 93-95 on furmark

how long would you run furmark to tell what max temps are? and would the max temps go down because of the breakin period?

Re:TIM Replacement - GTX 480s - DIY How To Saturday, May 01, 2010 3:31 AM (permalink)
what are your idles?

That sounds about right? Remember, with AS5, there's a chance you may not see any improvement at all until it cures, so you need to wait a bit for it to maximize its effectiveness. I've heard that can be SEVERAL hours, so patience is important.

Keep in mind that Furmark is designed to push your card to the limit. If you're only getting 93-95 C, that's a heck of a lot better than most people were getting with the default TIM. Either way, at this point I think it's best to wait and see what happens when the AS5 cures.

Here's a question. Was it the standard sized arctic silver 5 tube? No bigger than your pinkie? How much of it did you use, ie how far down did you press the syringe?

I didn't use AS5, I used AS Ceramique, but it's the same company and the same size tube. Hard to say exactly how much I used on one card, but for two cards and my motherboard south bridge, I ended up using about a tube and a quarter. I'd say given that, under half a little tube would work fine per card.

Now when you take it off, does the heatsink have AS5 in the nooks and crannies?

yes it covers most of it and the nooks, i will use ceramique next time since its cheaper. I am using OCCT to stress test it and it wont get past 92C

hombre is right. At this point I'd probably just start all over and document everything you do with pictures. Unfortunately, he's also right that you're using a lot of paste at this point so really it's up to you.

If you want to experiment, keep adding more and see what effect it has on temperatures. There is such a thing as having too much, however, and again, the stuff needs to cure.

Not sure about that temp with fan speed. Is that on furmark? Not too familiar with furmark.

yeah at this point your probably talking 1-5C AT MOST  difference if most of the block is making contact, is it worth the cost in paste time and headach

I'd go ceramique. That's the stuff I used and I idle at 41-44 and I've had it in less than 48 hours.

System Specs:
Corsair
HX1000W PSU
EVGA e760 CLASSIFIED X58 3x SLI
Intel i7 920 2.66 GHz @ 4.2 GHz (D0)
Cogage True Spirit CPU Heatsink/Fan
Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB
6 GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600
2x EVGA GTX 480 SC in SLI
Thermaltake Armor Plus Full Tower Case
Samsung Syncmaster 2253BW @ 1680x1050
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Logitech G500 Gaming Laser Mouse
