You know nvidia may say its alright but all I can think of is water boils at 100c when I see these temps you guys are getting on these cards.

Good thing they're not made of water...

Silicon won't melt until 1414*C.
Gold won't melt until 1064*C.
Copper won't melt until 1085*C.

It can be done just fine with the right engineering!

Okay followed tutorial down to the wire... even used artic silver 5 just as in tutorial.  So far temps are the same as before... maybe just 1 or 2 degrees cooler.  I'm getting lower 80's idle (dual monitors) and lower to mid 90's load at around ~89% fan speed.

Hey, I just saw this post -- missed it before -- how good is your air cooling? I know mine is solid and the stock paste was thick -- so once it was replaced I really noticed my temps drop.

Also, AS5 has a cure-in time. It has to go through a bunch of heat cycles before it reaches it's optimum.

Thanks for the nice write up.  I think I'm going to use shin etzu x23 on my card and see what happens.  When I get a second I'll do it before I install it in my system.

Yeah, that's stuff looks pretty nice. I sent the folks at Indigo Xtreme a tweet saying they needed to get their stuff straight for GPUs -- they'll need to rework their reflow characteristics for the HDT style heatsinks but that stuff would be golden.

In the absence of that -- your Shin Etzu x23 would be my go to if I had it on hand!

Ok so i did this and all i had was Prolimitech TIM from my megahalem.
Both done with Hulu on and 2 screens plugged in

dual Screen OEM TIM
-Idle 10% fan:74
Idle 100% Fan:52

Dual Screen PM TIM
Idle 10% Fan:72
Idle 100% Fan:49

so was it worth it. prob not. was it a learning experience? sure ;) I still need to do load temps later

First:  Woah - whatever camera you have takes really nice close up pictures.

Second:  Those temp differences are impressive, parrish.  This might become my weekend project.  Thanks for the post and the BR was well deserved.

Third:  I love the performance of the Shin Etsu stuff - if you can apply it well.  You wanna talk about play-dough?  That stuff is brutal.

1: Thanks! Samsung TL220 -- digital point and shoot -- on the macro setting with flash off -- about $200.00 -- has a ton of cool features without the big DSLR price and lenses and stuff. Perfect for non photog enthusiasts.

2: I think my temps were more impressive only because of the case airflow and the amount of goop piled high that had already gotten crusty. I suppose I'm very much on the high-end of normal results. But still, a few degrees with these cards is critical. Thanks again.

3: Yeah, I've heard it can be a beast!

see first. it could jsut be that the prolimitech TIM is nothing special but i only went down 2-3 deg so prob not worth it. maybe if you get some expensive tim it may matter. it probably also matters how the tim is on your card which i guess you really wont know till its off. Mine was not caked on too much

I'd only recommend it for users with verifiable temperature disparities (e.g. one of my 480s ran 12*C hotter than the other) and want their cards to run cooler.

Changing the TIM isn't rocket science either -- but not everyone is capable of doing the job right! Caveat emptor!

Just a thought, but wouldnt it be best to also apply a little paste between the heatsink 'gaps' ? If you dont, and you then re-attach the heatsink the pressure will suck up the paste into those spaces taking it away from the GPU.

Maybe I'm being over critical, but just thinking out loud.

Ya I'd agree with this, unless you are getting huge disparities in temps between two cards under load (not idle if you run multimonitor) there's probably not much reason to do this.  These heatsinks become so saturated with heat the TIM application and how efficiently it transfers to the heatsink aren't the problem, its how fast the fan can push air over the fins to dissipate that heat.

Tried it myself yesterday before I put the new SC in, if anything temps are a little bit worst.  The nice thing about this mod however is as stated, its much much much easier to get to the heatsink on GF100 than GT200, so its a pretty pain-free operation and certainly one worth doing if you're curious or unsure about your GPU temps.

Yeah it should work fine, just make sure to apply enough of it so that there's solid contact across the entire IHS and heatsink.

I'd only recommend it for users with verifiable temperature disparities (e.g. one of my 480s ran 12*C hotter than the other) and want their cards to run cooler.

Changing the TIM isn't rocket science either -- but not everyone is capable of doing the job right! Caveat emptor!

Yes, the only reason my TIM replacement helped as much as it did was that it actually allows better transfer at loads and removes build up goop blocking airflow at the most thermally conductive parts.

I also temp gunned my heat pipes. The pipes to the rear of the card were always 3-5*C hotter at load than the ones toward the front of the card.

They were around 45*C for the pipes and the top plate.

The PCB over the GPU was around 67-70*C while down near the chokes, MOSFETs, and VRMs they were around 58-61*C.

I did it with one of those $300 temp guns (borrowed it) that are extremely precise vs the $40.00 jobs that are within 2-3*C either way.

My goal was to determine how efficient the thermal conductivity was. I was pretty pleased with how much it was able to dissipate. Of course, the fans also run at 4000RPM @ 92% (92% is the applied max, not 100%).

Hey, mwparrish, I like the guide, but I was reading up on some other posts, and saw that you are RMAing your 480s or something along the lines of that? What happened? Just wondering.

Well, long story short... I bought 2x 480s. Once ran roughly 12*C hotter than the other and wouldn't OC worth a darn. The other was epic. I replaced the TIM on both and temperatures normalized. However, performance of one of the cards was still mediocre at best -- when I'd try to run OC Scanner on that card it would crash about 50% of the time while the other card would great.

So I thought maybe it was VRM temps, etc. I got the temp gun and the heat wasn't bad at all from the VRMs, memory, chokes, MOSFETs, etc.

Then I noticed when SLI is off the card having stability issues default to 1.038v while the great card defaults to 1.075v. Now, I assume default voltages are set/controlled by the BIOS. However, they have the exact same BIOS. So something appears to be up with this card. I don't know what it is that causes it to crash 50/50 in OC Scanner -- but I suspect it may have something to do with supplying power between the power plugs on the card and the chips themselves.

I'm sure EVGA will sort it out. The problem card vs the great card is like night and day. I realize vanilla cards are vanilla but there shouldn't be this huge stability/performance gap between them coupled with the evidences I'm seeing that this one probably passed QA -- but by the skin of it's teeth and once it was in real world use it started acting up once the bake-in time is over.

It's all gravy.
