I can not talk up quality surge protectors enough after what happened to me yesterday.  Long story short, my apartment complex came in to fix a switch yesterday and somehow crossed 2 circuits pushing a sustained 240 volts to regular 120 volt circuits.
The circuit that got over volted, had on it:

My office:
  • My desktop (see signature)
  • 3 monitors
  • Color laser multi function printer
  • Rack mount server
  • My wife's desktop
  • 4P Supermicro folding board
  • 24 port rackmount gigabit switch
  • 8 port rack mount KVM
  • various other computer hardware
Living Room
  • 50" Samsung 3D TV
  • Media center computer
  • All in one home theater box
  • AT&T Uverse box
Bedroom
  • 32" Samsung Smart TV
  • Media center computer
  • various other minor electronics

All of this equipment was protected by 5 surge protectors and 2 UPSs.  4 of the 5 surge protectors where office grade Belkin surge protectors.  The 5th one was an off brand one that I bought on clearance when I use to work for PC Club.  The 2 UPSs are Belkin 1500VA tower UPSs.

Everything behind a Belkin surge protector or Belkin UPS is working great after the electrical issues were resolved.
My printer which was behind the off brand surge protector, is dead.

Moral of the story.  Dont skimp on surge protectors.  You will regret it later.

Now I get to fight with the property management over replacement of the surge protectors and printer.  They asked me to price everything out and they wanted to know what my insurance deductible was for my renter's insurance.  If they just want to pay me my deductible, I'm going to be pissed and will fight it.  That will hit my insurance and I will pay more for the premium increases than if I just walked away from it all.

You should also look into a line conditioner. My Computer doesn't crash anymore when all three of my video cards go to 100%.

The way it's supposed to work is that you either collect the damage directly from the property management or go through insurance.  You aren't obligated to go through insurance for their benefit, unless it happens to be in your renter's agreement.  If you do go through insurance, you're still entitled to collect all the damage claimed from the property management, although that amount must go back to pay your insurance.  In other words, no double-dipping.  You may also want to talk to your insurance company, as they may prefer to collect the amount directly from the property management, rather than have you act as a middle-man after the fact.

The fact that you have insurance doesn't give the property management a pass on liability for the damage to your property.  Ultimately, the property management owes you for the full cost of your damage; it's just a matter whether you get it directly from the property management, or if you go through insurance and then have the property management pay your insurance back for the cost of the damage.

Almost all respectable desktop power supplies are rated for 120v OR 240v. You could probably plug your computer directly into a 240v line and have no problem. Your monitor and other stuff? Well that's a different story.
