I hope EVGA doesn't run into this problem when they release their new boards.

Basically you have your four DIMM sockets (A1, A2, B1 and B2). With 2 RAM sticks installed in socket A2 and B2, the motherboard will automatically set the DDR5 RAM at 4800mhz (JEDEC timings) and everying runs without any issues. However, when you populate all 4 sockets, the Asus motherboards automatically downclock the RAM to 4000mhz (below JEDEC values). And if you try to manually set the timings to 4800mhz while all 4 DIMMs are installed, games and benchmarks crash and users are being plagued with BSODs.

seems like a simple bios bug. I seen this same bug is some older boards witch tend to be patch out.

...its called new tech and BIOS update and there have been many already..did you check out Shamino's BIOS Updates page?

btw that Thread has 5 or 6 people complaining:
- one is using Asus AI OC (no enthusiasts I know uses it to OC)
 - did they try XMP II ?
- Of course there going to have to re-set there OC's as they updated the BIOS (thats normal)
- One of em is complaining he is isnt stable anymore on "Auto" with XMP and 64G (16*4G sticks)..hhhmm, maybe push your vDIMM and SA up a bit...just a thought.
- 4 DIMMS is going to be a bit more finicky (yes even running XMP) with "daisy chain" topology....probably coming from T-topology whereby it was the opposite.
- One flashed back to previous BIOS and said it was ok.

Its all new tech man,,,of course there will be bugs that will be addressed with BIOS updates.
One thing with Asus (especially having Shamino onboard), he provides almost daily / weekly BIOS updates for all there ROG Boards.
Thats what makes Asus Boards pretty darn good (the BIOS support).

My Z390 Maximus Extreme Board is how many chipset generations old and I believe I had 3 BIOS updates this past year alone...a few of them for both W11 compatibility, as well as Rebar...one other for addressing some minor issues that popped up after the initial rebar BIOS update.

I'm sure there will be lots of bugs n BIOS updates with Evga Boards when they make there debut, there were I recall on the Evga Classified Boards I owned.

That's the Intel supported specification is to downclock with two dimms per channel so it's supposed to do that by default, it's not a bug.

XMP with 4 sticks though, best of luck.

Exactly !!! In most cases even enabling XMP usually requires a certain amount of tweaking....whether it be to boot (in some cases) or to ensure stability.....from my experience its generally bumping up vDIMM and sometimes VCCSA....the DDR5 is a bit more complex with its onboard PMIC...likely be a bit more tweaking.
For myself its rare with any higher performance kits I pretty much always bump up vDIMM a little while Im in BIOS loading XMP and really XMP is just a base line.

good stuff thanks for posting, I'm very familiar with this thread and currently in the midst of a Z690 Maximus Extreme build myself

That's some solid info right there dude, thanks. I had forgotten that the Z690 chipset only supports Dual Channel Memory. For the last few generations (X99 and X299) we've been blessed with Quad Channel memory. Seems a shame to not have Quad Channel DDR5. I guess for the Z690 generation, it might be prudent to just get 2 sticks of 32GB instead of 4 sticks of 16GB DDR5 RAM.

That is absolutely it...2 Sticks not 4 Sticks....2 Sticks will be optimal for daisy chain topology and OC'ing results will shine over 4 sticks.....the Z390 Chipset was just the opposite (as in better of to go with 4 sticks vs 2 sticks).

Its the main reason I went with Z690 Apex vs Extreme this go around....also the price ;)

If you want to know what Memory will work best with a Mobo (as in 4 sticks or 2 sticks), simply go to the Mobo QVL and have a look at how many 2 stick or 4 stick kits are listed....if a ton of 2 stick kits listed, then go with 2 sticks, if hardly any 2 stick kits listed but lots of 4 stick kits, go with the 4 sticks .....

....not sure what topology Evga Z690 Boards will be.....

As for Quad Channel, yes only native to HEDT, whuch has been pretty much dead since X299 and Mainstream Z290 took over the reigns as "Best Gaming Platform" due to high Clock speeds.
My last HEDT build was 3930K on an Asus Rampage IV Extreme, but really my X79 was able to tie me over and skip X99 and by the time I was looking to replace it, didnt make any sense at all to go with HEDT X299 vs Z390 9900K....
The big advantage of HEDT was all the PCI-E Lanes, but now that multi GPU's (SLi) is a thing of the past, simply not really required any more for most, as in a single RTX 30xx series Card can run at X16 with a couple of onboard NVMe Drives running at X4 on Z690.

So for Z690 (Asus Boards) and daisy chain topology, should be easier to "post" 2*16G 5200 C38/40 vs 4*8G/16G same CAS.
And for sure, the first adopters at ROG are muscling there way thru growing pains, but at least there is lots of BIOS support there ...
I figure by the time I get my DDR5 kit the worst of the pains will be less....

This feature is unrelated to the Rog Hero fires correct? Interested in the root cause to that one.
