I came into position of an EVGA X79 Classified board and am in the process of putting together a PC with it. It has the following:

i7 3820 (I am planning to put an i7 4930K in it)
8 GB of RAM (pair of G.Skill 4 GB modules rated at 2133 MT/s)
240 GB SSD
500 GB HDD
GTX 1050 Ti
500w PSU

I am running into a few problems and would really appreciate some help. In order for the board to use the processor, I need to update the BIOS. I have a preference for updating it through the BIOS itself. However, I think perhaps the BIOS links on EVGA’s website are dead. Whenever I click on the BIOS file link, it does not go anywhere.

It is worth noting that I do not have an OS installed on this system yet, but do plan to put Windows 10 Home on it. It’s also entirely possible that I am just a little confused with the process outlined in the link.

Also, when I have the 1050 Ti seated in the motherboard, it will not POST. A friend of mine suggested switching from Legacy BIOS to UEFI or vise versa. I forget which he said as it was a few months back. The problem is, I am not sure how to do this within the BIOS (or if it is even an option). So any help with it would be very appreciated.

Also, while I am at it, I recall just getting into the BIOS was untypical process compared to other manufacturers. I was able to get into it a few months ago, but I forgot how I did it. If I may also have anyone provide a quick list of steps to do that, it too would be really appreciated.

You can access the bios by hitting the del key at startup. To change legacy/uefi look under the boot menu. The latest bios is able to be downloaded here... https://cdn.evga.com/bios/X79/E779_flashtool_208.zip

Note: I was able to download the latest bios without issues, so the link isn't dead.

Thank you. I recall attempting to access the BIOS previously by mashing one of the F keys or Delete and it did not work, but I will give it another try. Regarding the link, based on my understanding from the page I was looking at, that would be for flashing the BIOS while within Windows and not while accessing the BIOS. Did I misunderstand the instructions perhaps? The links I was referring to were below the one you provided, granted we are looking at the same page. I would include a link to that page, but when I tried to initially in this topic, the link was removed.

Just now tried to access the BIOS via mashing the Delete key, but without success. It is worth noting that the board beeps at some point while mashing the Delete key, likely indicating that it is detecting that there is some input from the keyboard happening.

BIOS Installation

  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS
  • From the BIOS, navigate to the Save & Exit tab and open "Select BIOS File."
  • Select the .bin file you wish to flash.

Thank you again. I was not sure if that link you provided was a tool for flashing the BIOS within an OS or the BIOS update itself. However, that still seems to leave the issue of not being able to access the BIOS itself.

I just now tried that per your suggestion. It did not seem to work. In fact, all the F keys did not work.

If it helps, last time I had to do something along the lines of holding a red button on the motherboard itself for a predetermined amount of time, then a few other steps to get into the BIOS.

That is a cmos clear, which would get you into the bios, but you shouldn't have to do that every time to get in.

Thanks for clearing that up. That is strange. I certainly hope that does not mean the motherboard is faulty in that case.

No problem. What does the debug led readout say when trying to access the bios with del/f2?

With attempting to access the BIOS via mashing the delete key, the debug light shows 23.

With attempting to access the BIOS via mashing the F2 key, the debug light shows 25 and 26, alternating between them every few seconds.

Not sure if this helps, but it always goes to a black screen showing the following text:

Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected device and press a key_

That text is because you have no os loaded. Are you able to get into the bios after clearing the cmos?

Will do. Should I attempt it after using the onboard buttons, or just remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then put it back in? If the former, do you happen to know the exact steps? I recall it was a bit more than just holding the red button for a few seconds.

Simply pressing the red button while at the "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected device and press a key_" screen should do the trick.

I got a CMOS checksun error and can't seem to get past that page which includes the splash screen without restarting the whole system. I am going to try the other buttons on the board next and see what happens.

When you see the cmos checksum error it should say press F1 to continue to bios.

That is correct. It also gives an option to press F2 to continue as normal (I think, I forget the exact wording). However, pressing either of those did not do anything.

Sounds like your keyboard may not be working then. At the "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected device and press a key_" screen does pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL restart the system?

Oh that's right. I should have tried a different keyboard as part of the troubleshooting. In fact, I should also try another USB port while I am at it. I going to go back and try some of the things you suggested earlier with a different keyboard and USB port, so I might be a few minutes.

Pressing the Delete and F2 keys on separate attempts did not work after plugging in a different keyboard into another USB port.

Also attempted clearing the CMOS again via the red button the motherboard and pressing F1/F2, but that too did not go anywhere.

While displaying the Checksun error, BIOS LED on the board shows 64.

Well if your keyboard works on another computer then I'm thinking the issue is the board or the cpu. I'd suggest testing your keyboard, and cpu on another system to make sure they are working correctly, and if they are then it's a motherboard issue.

I was afraid of that. I am quite certain both keyboards work as I have at least tried the first one VERY recently. I do not have another motherboard to try the CPU on, and LGA 2011 boards that use the 4th gen i7s are not too common, so they are spendy, even used.

However, I did just now remove the existing RAM, which I can now see was a pair of G.Skill 4 GB modules running at 2133 MT/s and placed in a pair of 2 GB modules rated at 1333 MT/s. I also unplugged the drives via the SATA cables. Somehow this made the system automatically go into BIOS without any input. I can now confirm that the CPU in there now is an i7 3820.

That being said, I don't seem to be able to navigate within the BIOS with the keyboard. I recall last time I was able to access the BIOS, I was able to.

I am going to play around with it some more and see if I can get anywhere.

Further update; upon a second reboot, it went to the BIOS again by itself (no keyboard input from me). I currently suspect it had something to do with some wonkyness with the drives connected to the system as I have seen it happen more than once in the past building other PCs. However, when that happens, it always just sticks on the splash screen and does not go all the way to checking if an OS is detected on any media connected to the board.

However, still can't navigate within the BIOS. I have both keyboards connected this time.

Further, further update; I just now disconnected one of those keyboards and inserted it into one of the USB 3.0 ports on the case itself (I had the keyboards connected to the ports on the motherboard itself). It made a beep as it was plugged in and now I am able to navigate the BIOS.

So the ports on the motherboard are faulty, perhaps? I have seen boards where one port stops working, but not all of them. So weird.

Sorry for all the posts in a row. As suggested earlier, I am under the Boot section within the BIOS. However, I am not seeing any option that sticks out to me that would switch it from Legacy BIOS to UEFI or vise versa. But, on the otherhand, adjusting things within BIOS in general is a blind spot for me, other than some basics. The options I see is as follows:

Setup Prompt Timeout
Bootup Numlock State
Quick Boot
Fast Boot
GateA20 Active
Option ROM Messages
Interrupt 19 Capture
Boot Option Priorities

Ports on the board could be bad, or disabled inside the bios. Looks like you may get it working now.
