I just finished putting together my x299 Dark board and am wondering if a regular sata cable fits into the asmedia sata ports or do I need a special sata cable?

As long as it is a SATA3 cable it will work.

There's no difference in SATA data cable transfer rates..The difference between SATA 1/2/3 is in the motherboard SATA controller, and the SATA device..The Intel SATA 3 controller on your mobo is 600 MB/s (6 Gbit/s), same as the ASMedia controller as far as speed goes (refer to your mobo manual)..But say if you would connect a SATA 2 (3 Gbit/s) device to a SATA 3 (6 Gbit/s) connector/controller, it would run at SATA 2 (3 Gbit/s) speed.

The SATA 1/2/3 cable/connector interface is industry-standard and backward/forward compatible..No special cable is needed..Use whatever cable you have, it really won't matter.

In the light of what bob16314 posted let me clarify my words for better phrasing:

ASMedia SATA ports do not require any "special" cable, any cable that would be in any way different from cable that will work with rest of SATA ports on that mb. That is the whole point behind having a standard.

What bob16314 is talking about is never-ending 'net debate whether there is any functioning difference between cables that are marked as SATA2 vs. ones marked as SATA3, and that is a whole different ball of wax that got started by cable manufacturers introducing confusion in the market.

However, I don't think that topic needs to be started in response to your question because even -IF- there was any I assume you won't be using some odd cable you might have laying somewhere, I assume you will be using one of cables that EVGA shipped with your mb which brings us back to original question: Any cable that works fine on non-ASMedia SATA3 ports will work fine on them too, there is no "special" cable.

no "special to asmedia" does not exist ... as mentioned it is a SATA socket

use the cables that came with the MB

Exactly. I see absolutely no reason to use ASMedia ports unless it is for exception cases described in manual.

Yes, there are also requirements/limitations imposed when using the Intel and ASMedia SATA interfaces/controllers..That's why it's important to RTFM (Read The 'Friendly' Manual).
