Re: RTX 2080 TI FTW3 ULTRA HYBRID GAMING pump noise 2019/04/09 07:50:07 (permalink)

I took apart my 2080 TI Hybrid XC last night to try a simple mod to see if controlling the pump via the motherboard would be worth the effort. I ordered a JKtech 4 pin mini to 4 pin fan adapter from amazon for 9.99.

The tear down is simple. You just take all the screws off the back plate and remove the front cover screws.  The shroud easily comes off and the led cable is easy to remove. I found the fan picking issue immediately because the fan wire was touching the bottom on the fan blades. So that was an easy fix to solve that problem (the fan still clicks when coming off and on, so that is another issue). I noticed that the cable from the pump and vrm fan connect to a simple power source by a split cable. This was unexpected as I assumed there would be two connectors to the board. No matter, I added the new cable and ran it out between the two pump cables.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte X399 Aorus Xtreme. I went into the bios and under fan control manually set the pump. I ran several noise test and temperature test by custom setting the voltage to the pump. My conclusion is like most on the forums who have done this mod, any thing about 90% has the same loud refrigerator whining sound. I set mine at 85% and it’s much better.

The temperature various between stock 100% pump fan and 85% is around 1 – 3 Celsius. My card never got past 58 C in the test I performed with the fan power limit at 85%. The card hovers at 55 with the pump at 100%. For this test, I also replaced the standard 120mm fan with a Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM, 4-Pin Premium Quiet Fan and connected it to my motherboard so that I can custom control the rpms. I am sure that helped with lower temperature readings also.

I believe EVGA could do a simple BIOS mod to allow custom fan controls. I am sure this would save them money over RMA’s for fan whines.

I must say that I am a bit disappointed that I spent 1400.00 on a card that I had to mod to get to a point where I like the sound. Next time, I am doing a full custom loop. Over all I spend around $35.00 to perform this fix.

Great info. Thanks for posting. I may do the same mod to mine.

I agree that the fix should be simple on EVGA's end, by implementing the ability to adjust pump speed in X1. Even if it requires an update to the GPU's bios, I really don't see why this can't be done just like it is with AIO software from Corsair, NZXT, Collermaster etc.

Don’t forget that you have also void your warranty. I replaced mine for a full refund from Newegg and got the aircooled version. Max temps of 64 and no fridge whine

This is not true. EVGA has stated multiple times in this forum that tearing the card down does not void your warranty. If it did, no one would install the hybrid kits or the Hydrocopper (or aftermarket) waterblocks.

As long as it's returned back to stock form prior to sending in for an RMA, there will be no issues with warranty claims. In fact EVGA is known for being one of the best, in this regard.

I have no regrets installing the hybrid kit on my FTW3 Ultra Gaming card. If I ever run into issues I'll just slap the triple fan cooler back on and send it in. No big deal.

tearing the card down wont, but i think lowering the pump to anything less than 100% will...at least i read that somewhere.

I gotcha. That is a good point but still unlikely. There really wouldn't be any way for EVGA to see whether or not you decreased the pump speed when you send the card into them.

Not that I'm condoning warranty fraud, but I just don't see how EVGA could realistically deny warranty claims for that.

Yah i dont think theres any way to tell, but i also did read somewhere that those pumps are designed to operate at 100%, i mean if they didnt then EVGA wouldve allowed us to control them and solve this issue once and for all. So if the card does fail or something after your warranty expires, they wouldnt need to deny anything....

Fair points.

I just wish, at this point, that EVGA would just say SOMETHING about this pump fiasco.

And I really hope that EVGA went with a different pump for the $1900 Kingpin cards that sold out yesterday. Otherwise they are going to have some very upset Kingpin owners wanting RMAs.

Any plans on the KingPin AIO being sold separately for the FTW3 cards?

yah im waiting on the reviews for those as well, its the same Astek 6 Gen Pumps but its a larger radiator, so lets see (i think there will be pump noise, if they wanted to fix it they wouldve done so ever since this started with the 1080ti hybrids) . If theyre silent, ill be willing to upgrade (if theyre part of the step up program) as they are 2 slotted as well and can be mounted vertically...

I'm fairly certain in the Kingpin thread, someone from EVGA said they won't be part of the step-up program.

They also sold out completely. So unless EVGA decides to make more I think that limited run is gone. I had one in my cart and ready for check out yesterday morning. I didn't pull the trigger but now I'm hoping I don't end up regretting that decision.

I think you made the right decision, i wouldnt upgrade from a 2080ti ftw3 ultra to a kingpin paying the full 1,900 USD. I would do a step up yah and add another 400, but the card we have now is more than great.

Re: RTX 2080 TI FTW3 ULTRA HYBRID GAMING pump noise 2019/04/09 09:21:22 (permalink)
True. On the air cooler I was able to hold steady clocks of 2040 -2050MHz and 8000 memory for long gaming sessions. With the hybrid cooler I'm able to hold 2070-2080MHz and 8000 memory with slightly cooler temps.

FPS is about the same.

I think I'd rather take that $400 price difference and put it towards a custom loop, instead. 2100MHz and 8200 memory should be no problem with a proper open loop. Now I just need to get the nerve to do something like that.

For those of you who are experiencing higher than expected noise levels on the HYBRID kits can you let me know what the serial number is that is on the bottom of the radiator?

I'm probably just more sensitive to it lately, but I swear my pump whine is getting louder. I have to keep my 4x120mm intake/exhaust case fans at a minimum of 60% to drown it out and even then it's still slightly audible.

Really hoping EVGA implements a way for us to decrease the pump speed by the time EK comes out with their FTW3 20 series water blocks. Otherwise I'll finally take the plunge into a custom water loop. At which point the hybrid kit will waste away, collecting dust in my basement. Such a shame...

At first I didn't notice it much but I got used to the fan noise (moving air basically, thanks nf a12x25 for only having air noise under 1.5k rpm) and now I can hear the noise thats not supposed to be there aka the pump noise. Its not that loud really just I can now hear the difference in pitches and all. So it might be that or idk lol

Re: 2080 ti Hybrid kit pump noise.  I really had no option to mount the hybrid radiator properly in my haf xb case so I mounted it sideways and it still worked fine with excellent temps but plenty of pump noise.  I modified the hybrid kit with the suggested adaptor cable connected to my motherboard and the pump is almost silent at 80% dc voltage.  Again, excellent temps and the radiator is exhausting heat appropriately.  I connected the radiator fan to the motherboard on a curve tied to the GPU.  Works great.  The card fan is run from Precision X1.  Works great. My Gigabyte z390 has Smart Fan, so setting up the pump and radiator fan was a breeze.  I would suggest making your settings in the bios for the fan header you intend use for the pump before first use so the pump is running upon first startup.  I'm happy with this set up but the question I have is - could I also use an adapter cable to connect the radiator fan back into the Hybrid cooler instead of the mother board so it can be controlled by Precision X1 as well?   Anybody try this yet?

rsogge - Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for your question. But I have a question for you...

What adapter cable did you use to connect the pump to the MB? I've got this one bookmarked and like that it comes in a black sleeved option. If this will work I may place my order to have on hand if I decide to make this change.

Yes. Thats the one I used. I wish I  bought the black sleeved version. Others have turned the pump down to 50% but my experience was that 80% eliminated the noise.

I wouldn't use curves on fans or pumps based on microprocessor temps because it fluctuates so rapidly, you could lessen the longevity of your motor whether it be a fan or pump, let alone create different annoying pitching sounds.  For a curve, I would only base it on gradual delta temp changes or on water temps.  If those options aren't there, I would just leave the fan or pump at a constant speed where it's audibles are tolerable and performance is optimal.

If I were to do it I'd just set it at a static 80% or 85% at all times.

Comparing the EVGA 2080 hybrid to the EVGA 1080ti hybrid, I find the 4 pin radiator fan a big improvement.  No... it's a HUGE improvement.  The pump noise is about the same.  I'm all set to attempt the 80-85% pump mod because I can't take the constant whine.  Can you please elaborate on the process?  You mentioned both the pump and vrm fan are powered by a split cable.  Do you just unplug the pump section of the cable from the board plug it into the modded extension and then into the mobo?  The vrm fan is plug in separately to the power source?  Any chance you have any photos of this?

Thanks!

My conclusion is like most on the forums who have done this mod, any thing about 90% has the same loud refrigerator

Do you just unplug the pump section of the cable from the board plug it into the modded extension and then into the mobo?  The vrm fan is plug in separately to the power source?  Any chance you have any photos of this?

Thanks!

Both the pump and radiator fan operate from the mini 4 pin on the card. When you unplug the pump from the mini 4 pin on the card and use the adapter to plug the pump directly into a motherboard header the vrm fan will continue to operate and be controlled from the Precision software.  The vrm fan is still connected directly to the card. You can unplug the radiator fan from the lead coming from the pump harness and plug the radiator fan directly into a fan header on the motherboard to control it separately.  I'm certainly no expert but this worked for me.
