I'm about to purchase a new GTX 980. I've decided on EVGA, now its just deciding between the FTW, or one of the two SC cards (one blower, one open air).
The quirk is I have a silverstone Raven case (RV05B) which rotates the internals 90°. The manufacturer recommends blower style cards, but whenever I've asked around people say the case has enough airflow to stick with open air, which made sense and had been my plan.
The question that just occurred to me, is how much can the orientation affect the heat pipes. I found pictures of the 980s heatsink and I'd say 70-80% of the heat pipe real estate would be below the contact plate when mounted vertically. Wouldn't the liquid sit down there due to gravity, making the heat pipes ineffective?
And how much louder are blower cards anyway? I cant find any videos or anything that do noise comparisons.

Thanks for any information you have

The heat pipe orientation does matter, but it depends on the length of the heat pipe and the type of wick inside the heat pipe. I don't think you can know all the answers unless you do a lot of testing and cut one open.

That is why I was posting here.  I was kind of hoping to maybe hear from someone at EVGA.  Do they post on these forums?  Or is there a better way to maybe ask them directly?

I'm sure you've taken a look at this from Silverstone's site:
CPU cooler:
"Horizontal style cooler

Good orientation                 Good orientation        Bad orientation

Many CPU coolers can be rotated when installing on motherboards, the illustration here shows a SilverStone NT06-E
VGA cooler

The illustration here shows a VGA cooler that will not work well in the FT02 because the heat source side (touching the GPU) ends up being located higher than the other end."

I have not owned the RV05B, but I did use the FT02 and FT03 case which both had the 90° turn. Using many styles of open shroud heat sinks with heatpipes in different orientations, I did not notice much (if any) difference. Blower style coolers (Titan cooler) can be pretty quiet at idle, but imo louder than acx at load (though I found that ACX coolers give off a resonance during certain rpms that can be annoying).

Thanks for that info El-Dubya.  I had not seen those images but that pretty illustrates my concern.  I think the blower style will be the route I take.

I can just get the EVGA style blower correct?  the EVGA with the reference cooler is just a different shroud from what I've heard.  Just want to make sure the internals are just as good and will perform the same correct?  I don't have a window so no need for the awesome looks of the titan shroud.

Honestly, I've not seen a lot of people on the these forums comment on that type of cooler (although reviews from Amazon/Newegg look good). While it looks similar in design to the Titan, I cannot be certain on the internals without some images.  .

Re: Question about heat pipe orientation. 2016/06/14 15:53:55 (permalink)
I know this is an older post but im curious as to what you decided and what your experience was like? I have a Silverstone fortress 2 case which is vertical positioned as well and im debating the 1080 FE or an ACX version. Im not concerned about the price difference, im concerned about heat...
I currently have the gtx 970 scc acx 2.0 installed and the idle and load temps are a bit to high for my liking. I use to gave a gtx 670 blower style card and I remember the heat being much lower so im wondering if this may be the same case? anyone have any experience between the blower and acx temps making a difference in a 90 degree rotated case?
