solved.  Keeping it up for future reference.

It was the NVIDIA drivers.
Even though I reinstalled the drivers, I should have done the DDU complete uninstall (and in Safe Mode) before doing the reinstall.

The odd thing was it worked prior to Win 11 upgrade.  So in doing the WIN 11 upgrade, something happened with the NVIDIA drivers.

Noob mistake.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Here is the original post.

The HDMI port is (mainly) not working.

When I boot the system, the port works for making changes to the bios, so that is good.
But when it gets into windows, I just get a black screen.

I have all the software/firmware updates.
Running the last NVIDIA software for Windows 11.
I am running Windows 11.

If I boot using the motherboard HDMI port, it works fine.  The other card ports work since I can use them for the VR system.
However, if I unplug from the motherboard and then try the 3080 HDMI port, same problem.

I rather not RMA the card since I suspect there is some software/configuration problem since it does work when making changes to the BIOS, and I can still use the card for the VR app (my main usage)

ASUS Maximus Hero motherboard.

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

What TV or monitor model are you using? If it's a 4K TV, you might need to turn on the 4K mode (usually called something like UHD Deep Color for LG, or something similar for other brands).

    Thanks for the idea!
Unfortunately it is an older LG 1920 monitor, so nothing fancy.
I wish I had a second one to see if there is any hdmi output as a second monitor.
(you gave me an idea to see if there is some setting in the nvidia driver that is forcing a higher resolution that the monitor can't handle)

could be a bad hdmi cable. swap it out and check again.

bios doesn't need high bandwidth, but windows does so the cable may be crapping out.

the motherboard hdmi port may be forcing low bandwidth so that is why it works with that. but the card is forcing high bandwidth in windows so that may be why.

I bought a pny 3070 back in the day and a similar thing was happening to me until I swapped out the hdmi cable. I can't recall if my problem was exact as yours, but I did swap out the hdmi cable and it was fine.

Have a spare drive to see if windows 10 causes the same issue? Could be related to windows 11 only.

HDMI and Dp connection issues.  I wish they would just go away.  Had my fair share.  Start with the rotisserie of cable's u pay for what u get.  At this stage of the game u just have to wonder y it's still an issue at all

Is is possible your 3080 is running at a resolution/refresh rate your monitor doesn't support when loaded into Win 11?  Try booting Win 11 into safe mode and see if that works first.

Also, is it possible that your BIOS settings are defaulting to onboard graphics instead of the card?

    Thanks!
    The plot thickens...

I was able to boot into Win 11 using safe mode with the GPU HDMI.  BUT, the resolution was the same as what the monitor normally runs at (1920x1080).  So it maybe that either:
    -  Win 11 in non-safe mode is picking a resolution that the monitor can't handle.
        -  However, when I boot via the motherboard HDMI, it has the right resolution, so I don't see why Win 11 would choose a different resolution when I am plugged into the GPU.
    -  The NVIDIA drivers are messed up.  This seems to be the logical conclusion - but these are the same drivers I was running pre Win 11 upgrade.  I will try to wipe those out and re-install.

(btw, i do have BIOS set for GPU)

thanks to you and others for helping out.

Is this a brand new Win11 install or you upgraded in place from Win10? If later was everything working before upgrade? If former is there a way for you to try it with Win10?
