Hi all,
I just installed my new RTX 2070 Ultra Gaming. It seems to be running fine but I'd appreciate some advice as a novice user, having been a Radeon user for many years.

First, there was no software in the box, just the card and nothing else. I downloaded & installed the latest driver from EVGA, 430.39

It's up and running and feels very responsive and smooth, so all seems to be good.

But when I run a game, say for example Elite Dangerous, my FPS is mid 40s sitting in the space station, while Nvidia Inspector shows temps of only 40 degrees, and GPU usage of less than 40%.
With my R9 Nano I was seeing higher frames than this, and I feel as if my 2070 is not working to its full potential.
The temps are not rising, the fans are not operating, and I can't tell if the card is actually using it's 1725 boost speed.

I see mention of Precision X1 software - is this recommended, or am I missing some settings that let me switch to high performance over power saving?

I have an i7 4770K at stock speed, 24GB ram (2400) & Win10 64, on a 1920x1080 DP monitor. I know my mb, cpu & ram will need updating, but I'm not sure this is enough to stop the card working more powerfully?

Any advice gratefully received.

As long as you have the Nvidia Driver installed and PX1 (Precision X1) you should be ok.  Go into PX1 and hit default, apply and than hit save if your fans aren't moving on load.  It's possible that your GPU isn't working too hard and doesn't necessarily need the fans to work as of yet till it gets to a higher temp.

Seeing you're only @ 1080p (assuming 60hz), your GPU won't work too hard on many titles as that GPU should handle high FPS/Hz for 1080p no problem.

Thanks GTXJackBauer,

I'm a bit surprised EVGA don't point new users to the Precision software in their instructions.

I did as you said, installed Precision X1, ran it, and left it on default target of 100 GPU, 81 temp, and when I started a game it immediately worked, went up to 57 degrees and 97% GPU usage.

And it also allows LED adjustment which is an added bonus.

I think you're right, my 60hz monitor is probably not taxing the card enough, but it'll do for now till I upgrade the rest.

I'm very pleased with the card so far.

Thanks for the help

Yeah at 1080 screen res your CPU is the bottleneck.

Swap to 1440 (2k) or 4k will see the card start to work hard.

Glad it all worked out.

Yes, the 2070 is a great GPU, especially for 1080p 60hz gaming.

thanks Daniel, I will definitely take your advice and look for a 144hz this time.

Just to update from my original post, it appears I picked the wrong time to test Elite Dangerous with my new RTX2070. Unbeknown to me, the game had updated in the previous day or so, and now has a confirmed bug which is badly lowering everyones framerates, so it gave a false impression when I got those low numbers.
(In case anyone reads this who owns ED, just turn off 'FX Quality' in the game settings to get your fps back, until a proper patch arrives).

I've since tried a few other games - Assetto Corsa Competizione, No Mans Sky, rFactor2, and my framerates are all massively increased over the Nano.

Just to update this, I chose an AOC 31.5" curved 144Hz 1ms monitor, £320 on Amazon, & I thought it seemed too good to be true, but the picture is amazing.

It's definitely made my 2070 work harder, 90+% gpu usage in many games now.
There are still some games that don't even use half it's power. I assume it depends on the combination of game code/age of game/resolution/refresh rate. But I've stopped worrying about frame rate now, every game I play is smoother and looks fantastic so that's good enough for me.
I'm very happy with monitor & GPU, and over the moon that I chose the EVGA - plenty of power and stays nice and cool. Thanks to all for the replies.
