My brother wants me to locate parts for a computer of his. He will be using it for gaming and other minor stuff like web browsing and academics. His budget is $750 and he wants an i5 2500k, so that knocks off $220. He will eventually want SLI with an EVGA GTX 560. What parts do you guys suggest? So far- EVGA GTX 560 Superclocked ($200), i5 2500K ($220), GSkill Sniper 8GB 1600 ($44). These haven't been purchased but are the components he wants.(Still open for suggestion) With these above specs, if remaining in the $750 limit is impossible, feel free to voice your opinion on other components that meet his budget. Thank you!!

he got already the 570? if so you can't sli with a 560!
the other things are all ok...
mind a PSU of 750w or above if you want SLI...
you got already mobo? and other stuff?
you start from an other build?

That was a typo, sorry. No, he doesn't have any of the hardware yet, it was just a list of possible components. I think is price range is kinda unrealistic if he wants a power supply that can eventually power 2 GTX 560's at full load.

For that budget, the i5 2500K seems like a lot. You haven't mentioned case, motherboard or PSU yet either. What games will he be playing? Personally for his use, I would recommend getting a better GPU vs CPU. No point getting a top of line CPU (on a budget) and then skimping on all other parts.

You can find the i-5 2500k a little cheaper if you look around. I think I paid $179 for mine. My mobo was under $100 too. Newegg ALWAYS has ram for cheaps on their daily deal thing.

here in italy price are too much different from yours, i can't help too much...
BTW if it's going to game an i5 2500k it's more that enough!!
for the GPU i suggest a 560 ti 448 that's it's the best price/perf... i would wait a bit till the prices drop...new AMD are coiming and you may expect something from nvidia...

Well he's obsessed with BF3 and wants high frame rates. He doesn't care about the case so allow 50-100$ for that. He needs a CPU that could communicate to 2 560's so I'm trying to find a motherboard for SLI around 100$.
I don't know- maybe an AMD build is better in terms of price for him but if Plymouth guys could suggest some parts for an AMD or Intel build then that would be nice. I'm sure he would appreciate it and I would as I'm trying to help him but I'm not as experienced wih the comp

I think it's totally possible with a $750 budget. $180 i5-2500k (Microcenter) $30 CM 212+ heatsink $150 Gigabyte P67-UD4 or $95 MSi P67A-G43 (Z68 is more common now, has additional features, costs more) $44 G.Skill 8GB DDR3 $95 Corsair TX750 (it will power SLI GTX 560's) case $100 Windows 7 $544 without a case so far...

I have to agree that the budget listed is unrealistically low for a system he wants to be able to push BF3 with. Seriously, there's a lot more to it than just the CPU/GPU and mobo. As mentioned cases, fans, cooling, drives optical or otherwise, PSUs, etc.

Thanks as well. I might be able to take a HDD from my friend because he doesn't use his old computer which I think is 500Gb 7200rpm which is fine in my opinion. We have a spare monitor and will have another when I upgrade to a single 26inch. I can also pull the optical drive out of an old Win Vista computer that's lying right beside me and there's a pair of speakers in my bathroom, I don't know why but they work regardless

Have him look at these two reviews, he'll discover what type of hardware is needed to fullfil his desires to determine how realistic his budget is: BF3 is GPU-intensive, he won't need to overclock the CPU, let alone buy something new. Also, RAM frequency isn't that impactful during gameplay, so the slowest is generally the cheapest and gives him an upgrade path should he want faster. Note: fast RAM does allow faster program loading, but not as much as an SSD. If you brother doesn't have an OS or monitor, then he has two choices: - Swallow his pride because he can't afford his desires (sure you could have told him that, but you got to prove it, with links and stuff)
- Save up for a higher budget. If he allocated $1000, then he could afford the newest HD7970 and keep the PSU choice but not CrossFire. As is, he could get over 60FPS ultra details even with the i3-2100.
If you want to try the AMD route (since BF3 doesn't care for CPU type that much, per reviews above), all things equal apart from these: $120 -- AMD A8-3650 2.6GHz quad-core $ 85 -- Gigabyte AMD A75 mATX (x16, x4) and he saves $80 while getting a quad-core. Although I'd use that $80 towards a better video card, like the GTX560 Ti 448-core -- of course he can't SLI because it draws 60W extra than the GTX560, but he can overclock the graphics card as much as it will take.

The budget does not include the OS, speakers, keyboard, mouse, optical drive, or HDD. As I said before, I could possibly get a HDD from my friend and the other stuff is just lying around. We both like the Intel route better and we're a little more familiar with it. With blacksapphire08's comment I think the budget will be met with a little $ over because of shipping. He can't save up for better components because he's in college and doesn't work because of his major and such. The money he's using is what he's allotted from his scholarships to building a computer, the budget won't increase by much.

I disagree that a dual core i3-2100 could keep BF3 above 60 fps at all times with ultra details.........

+1 i agree on-line it's really hard...maybe off-line...but it's not exactly the same game...
