Hi folks -

I have 2 identical HP monitors and an LG tv. I had the 770 for a few weeks, no problems - did the StepUp thing, got my 780 today and it won't detect the TV - "Rigorous Search" finds nothing. I tried rebooting with the TV off, with it on, etc etc etc Nothing works.

it's all the exact same hardware/cable that worked perfectly with the 770.

Thanks if you can share any thoughts or help!

Can you try a different cable?

What about the monitors?  Are they working properly?

Have you reinstalled the drivers since you got the 780?

thanks for the replies you guys -

ruled out the cable by connecting it to the Cable Box / TV - works perfect.

The 2 monitors (HP LP2475w 1920x1200) are working fine.

Hopefully it's all a driver issue. I didn't reinstall the driver yet but I will in the morning. EVGA has a BETA driver too, maybe that's worth a shot?

    Thanks again!

I installed the drivers from the DVD - after cleaning out all the old NV stuff - same story - no TV. The 2 computer monitors are fine.

I used the cable to connect the TV to the Cable Box and it worked right away so I'm sure the cable is fine.
Hard to imagine I'm the only one who has this trouble. But I don't see much on the web as far as fixes.
well if you have any ideas I'd sure love to read them!

    Thanks.

Did you change the input on the TV to your HDMI connection from the PC?

Yes - if you mean, did I select HDMI 2 instead of HDMI 1 - yep, did that. You have to choose the port you want active. And that's why I know it's the 780 or the graphics driver because the 2nd HDMI port is greyed out until I connect the cable. Then the TV offers to "Enjoy this device?" But selecting it only produces a blank screen with "NO SIGNAL" flashing around the screen.

I tried the BETA driver from EVGA, tried the DVD drivers and the current one from NV - 337.88 - all no luck.

I hope like hell it's not a bad HDMI port on the card - that would suck. I already waited 2 weeks doing the StepUp program I sure don't want to wait another 2 weeks while they ship me a new card - unless they'll cross-ship an RMA request.

It has to be a driver issue. I have Ultramon installed but I uninstalled it, thinking maybe there's a conflict. No help. I don't know what else to try.

Do you happen to have a DVI to HDMI adapter?  This way you could rule out the HDMI port on your GPU.

that's a good idea thanks - I don't have one but Radio Shack a few blocks away has one, according to their website. $20 plus tax. Meanwhile monoprice dot com has them for 3 bucks. ARgggh. All of them are single-link, which I guess is okay as my TV is 1080i.

Male DVI - Female HDMI adapter into the card and run my HDMI cable off that into the TV. If it works the HDMI port is probably bad - yeah that's a great idea thanks! Except now I have to sink more money into this setup - to troublshoot a $600 card. That sucks.

Not sure if this is a clue but I tried installing older drivers - from January and March of this year (332.21 and 335.23) - the setup "couldn't find appropriate hardware" (something like that) and refused to install. Both drivers were found by Advanced Search on NV's site for the GTX 780.

It feels like a software conflict, maybe something in Windows. The DVD driver complained about .NET Framework 4.0 - popped up saying it couldn't install the driver because of NF4 on the system. But then it installed it anyway so who knows.

You need .NET Frame 4.0 for the Geforce exp. btw.

    Here's what I'd do:

Do a Windows update to start.  That should give you the latest .NET software.  Should be 4.5 now.  Make sure to check for updates again after any reboots of previous installed updates.

    Then:
If using PrecX or MSI AB, set to NOT install with Windows in the properties and close it.  Then reboot!
D/L and save to your desktop the driver of your choice making sure it's for your GPU and OS.
Go to Prog/Feat and uninstall everything Nvidia.  Reboot!
Once back in Windows, run the driver by doing a custom install.  ONLY leave the graphics & PhysX components selected.  Uncheck everything else and put a check mark in the "Clean" install box.
    Reboot and test it out.

Thanks bd - unfortunately I've already followed that procedure quite a few times now - with one difference: I've been letting it install the HD Audio driver. I'll do it again w/out that.

I keep Windows updated regularly, checked anyway - nothing new - I haven't installed AB or PrecisionX yet till I get this straightened out - and I've cleaned out everything NVIDIA related including registry files the Driver Uninstaller didn't find. Got it down to bare bones VGA rez, then installed the DVD drivers - repeated the process and installed the current driver from NV.

I've done Clean Install every time except once, when of course it installed everything - so I cleaned it out again and I'm currently running the latest NV driver  337.88.

.NET Framework vers installed is 4.5.

Then verifying your HDMI port works or not would be the next step I would think.  Sounds like everything else is good.

Is it likely that I'd need to update my BIOS?

I know it's a different chip in the 780 compared to the 770 but ... I really don't want to do that until / unless it's absolutely necessary. Flashing the BIOS scares me - lol - I've only done it 2, maybe 3 times.

Anyway the latest BIOS is 2 years old - mine is 1 version prior, 3 years old. The Fermi card and the 770 had no issues but this 780 is being a PITA for some reason.

When troubleshooting, best to rule out everything you can.  It's very possible you need a bios update.

The DVI > HDMI adapter worked. Using the same cable out of the adapter, running to the TV and it works. All 3 displays are active now, working perfectly.

But that doesn't necessarily mean the card's HDMI port is bad right? Maybe it's a "handshake" issue that a new driver could fix.

Any thoughts? I guess I'll call EVGA support on Monday, see what they think too.

    Thanks you guys!

It sounds like you did a good clean driver install (a few times), so I have my doubts a driver would fix this.  I may be wrong, but it sounds like a bad HDMI port.  You may want to contact tech support to see what they have to say.  Reference your thread here as well.

damn. Well I'll call tech support on Monday, see what they say. I did come across a number of posts talking about HDMI handshake issues. That sucks if it's a bum port. As smooth and painless as the Step Up transaction went I really don't want to go through an RMA process. Maybe I'll just do without HDMI.

then again...if the HDMI port is wonky...what else is f-d up on the card? Right now it runs beautifully, just tears through the GPU rendering tasks I throw at it. All the while it stays silent and cool (full load I saw 60C max).

Well I'll see what EVGA says.

Thanks again for your help bdary - and everyone else - much appreciated!

Well my joy sure didn't last long. Now one of the HP monitors (via DisplayPort) is having trouble displaying text properly. There's no artefacts just crunchy text, as if no anti-aliasing is happening at all. I reverted the Global Settings on the "Manage 3D settings" tab and nothing helps. What the heck is going on with this card!~!!??

On the PCB of both the 770 & 780 is the card stamped "EVGA" or "NVIDIA"?

I don't have the 770 anymore because I exchanged it for the 780 - EVGA's "Step Up" program. I have pictures of the 770 but unfortunately none of them show the PCIe tab.

[edit: I assume EVGA would've rejected the 770 I sent them if it wasn't legit. And they're the ones who sent me the 780.]

I'll pull the card later tonight to double-check the electrical connections again and then I'll have a look. Yipes - I sure hope it's there.

What's the idea, that it could be a counterfeit card? If so these guys are seriously good. I'll definitely check it out - thanks!

Just curious if yours is stamped "EVGA" or "NVIDIA".

Oh okay - interesting - so there's no cause for alarm - I didn't really think a criminal enterprise could sustain itself trying to hawk phony GTX 780s!

Is there any way to choose once and for all which display shows the boot screens? If the TV is on that's where the boot screens will be displayed - even if the TV is currently sourced from the cable box. There has to be a way to change that.

I guess the 780's HDMI port is bad - I can't even get it to light up one of my computer monitors.

Thanks again for your help folks - I really appreciate it!
