So my ASUS CM-32 AC2600 finally fully died a little short of one year. Simply not pleased with ASUS over this. First My ISP did dumb stuff that blocked the router and wireless and once that issue was solved the modem section randomly died a few months later. Now the router side has kicked the bucket turning what was a $289 component into junk. Not even going to deal with ASUS support over this. At this point I have an old Netgear holding it's place but I need a much stronger unit.
I run a fairly large home LAN with 5 desktops and a 48 port switch for my work shop for more machines of various types and then I have probably 10 wireless devices spread out in the house which is a single floor but the modem and router are at the opposite end of the house from the bedrooms which have Smart TVs and some other IP home stuff so I need a solid range. I need a pretty beefy feature rich router that doesn't require third party UA for data snooping (ASUS).
It doesn't need to look pretty either. I keep it tucked out of sight and may even prefer a rack mounted solution if they are cheap enough as I plan to eventually install a network rack bracket to manage a home LAN in the future for POE security systems and other smart home things.

Are you happy with your network speed? If not just FYI there are some load balancing routers that are able to pair a 4G connexion to your classic DSL line to boost up the speed when needed. If you dont need that then why dont you just use your ISP router? You can add the functionalities you're missing with addons and since it would be your ISP's router you'll never have problems with blocked access.

Thanks for the suggestions every one.
@Cool GTX This was really the first time I had a bad experience with an ASUS product. But I will admit I have become a bit hesitant on getting into their new line of high end routers after looking at some of the reviews along with my experience of this unit.
@Neutro We were using the ISP's router originally and it just didn't reach everywhere it was needed. The router blocking issue was because we were not paying for wifi through their modem which was replaced with my own modem, the ASUS CM-32. When I finally understood why the ASUS wasn't working because of that the issue was fixed on their end but the modem section went out a few months later. So we went back to using one of there basic modems w/o wifi capability since the ASUS unit still retained that functionality up until this weekend.

Your ISP had no way to know you were using wifi if you were not using their own router. The only thing they can know in this case is if your line is synchronised or not so it's really strange! If i were you I would use the ISP router and buy a wifi extender to repeat the signal of the ISP router where ever needed. This way you don't have to pay more for another router and if your ISP router dies they'll replace it for free.

I'm kinda in the same boat. Netgear has become such a horrible company recently with botched firmware updates and terrible security practices. ASUS routers are questionable as well. I may go with Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X with one of their APs.

As Nereus suggested, go for Asus AC68U, you can't go wrong with that. If you have more cash to burn go for RT-AC86U which is pretty much a successor for AC68U

The ISP router is trash and they charge 10 bucks a month for it. ( in my area)

I agree, go with some ubiquiti stuff. I've got an edgerouterX and a unifi LR AP, both work flawlessly for over a year. The GUI on the edgerouter lacks some advanced configuration, but there are plenty of guides on using the CLI. If you want something a bit simpler, go with the USG. It integrates very well with the UniFi software and AP.

if you want the most control and the best features then build your own, use PFSense and enjoy all the tweaking you can do. mine runs on a older dell optiplex with 17 2600, 8GB ram and a 64GB ssd, with a dual port 10gbe card installed, you can add a wifi card if you need wifi or use a standalone AP as i did. its been rock solid for the past 6 months with no crashes or reboots.

If not, then a newer may still make improvements to your network security and broadcast quality. It may also be somewhat, or perhaps even significantly faster due to iterative hardware improvements and other software factors that are too numerous to mention here.

Almost a year now! No issues, I have my NAS attached, and all my smart TV's are routed to a drive on the NAS all my movie downloads/videos are attached! Haven't had any issues with that as well! I personally like the Nighthawk and have been using them for a while. Overpriced in my opinion, but if it works for me, I'd pay for it.

I've had an RT-AC3200 for over a year and have never had any issues with it. Great range and get full download speeds through Wifi ~120mbps and 6+ devices on wireless at any given time. If it's still under a year, wouldn't you be able to submit for warranty with ASUS?

bg8780 Ubiquiti. All day, everyday. Get away from that consumer trash. Router: https://www.amazon.com/Ub...r=8-3&keywords=usg Switch: https://www.amazon.com/Ub...&keywords=us-8-60w AP: https://www.amazon.com/Ub...-1&keywords=nanohd Controller and remote access (optional, can also be run on a Pi, server, VM): https://www.amazon.com/Ub...amp;keywords=cloud+key
That is the basic setup that I want to get from them. I just can't decide if I want the USG or ER-X. Yes, I know if I get the USG I'll have the eye pleasing Unify Controller GUI to manage both the router and AP, but I really want OpenVPN server support, which USG doesn't seem to have. I currently run an OpenVPN server on my existing router for remote access to my home network. I know the ER-X has this functionality and some more through its CLI. Plus, the ER-X is quite a bit cheaper.
The USG can support OpenVPN but it's done via a modified json file. ER-X is a good choice too. I have a EdgeOS and Unifi hybrid network for the in-laws. Newegg had the ER-X for $32 while back and I couldn't pass that up. SO I have ER-X>US-8-60W> 2x AP lites. Managed with a Cloud Key. So far so good.

So by going the EdgeRouter route, it is my understanding that you manage the EdgeRouter through its own interface, but any APs will be managed through the Unify Controller. Doesn't seem like a huge inconvenience - I think this is the route I will take. Unify seems like a nice concept, but you seem to give up some advanced configuration functionality that Edge equipment have and replace it with convenience. Also, I've found that Ubiquiti is working on UNMS - essentially the "Unify Controller" counterpart for Edge equipment - and is slated to eventually support managing any UAPs through it as well, which would be nice.

I started with an Edge router and UAPs. It's really not bad. Just go to the router's IP via your browser like any other router. UNMS is pretty slick but a waste of resources if you're just managing one router. Why spin up a VM when you can just go to 192.168.1.1? UNMS is mostly useful in a cloud instance if you manage multiple clients' networks. I ended up going with the full Unifi stack and I've been pretty happy. My only gripe is the current USG and USG Pro cannot handle QOS or IPS/IDS on my pipe. The hardware simply isn't strong enough to process over 250mbps with either of those features enabled. Once an upgraded model is released then it will be perfect. You mentioned "advanced configuration" that is available on EdgeOS and not Unifi. You are correct, but I'm curious what you plan on implementing that Unifi can't handle. My home network consists of 3 VLANS and 3 SSID's. (Main, IoT, and Guest). The USG also hosts a small RADIUS server for VPN users. (VPN is L2TP) The Unifi stack handles all of this with no problem. You are correct, Unifi is a bit more limited than EdgeOS I just don't think most people will use those advanced features in a home network so Unifi is a better and cleaner solution. The good news is, you can't go wrong either way.

Appreciate the info. I don't necessarily require OpenVPN, it's just what I currently use, but L2TP would be sufficient. I just prefer to use VPN to use RDP to my home workstation rather than have my RDP port always open the traditional way. Other than that, there isn't really anything else "advanced" that I need at this time - it's more of a "just in case" thing if I need something set up in the future that the USG may or may not provide as a feature. But it seems that Ubiquiti has been hard at work porting things over from Edge to USG so maybe in the long run it might be the more streamlined choice. As for QOS, that is a bit of a requirement for me as I do a lot of gaming while others in the household stream video constantly. My home network is 100/10 mbps, so I think that the base USG can handle that. Decisions decisions...

Others have gone insanely deep about the Puma chip, but I also upgraded my N66U to an AC86U, Merlin recommended. Oh, btw love my MB8600 Modem
I might have to take a look at the MB8600. bg8780 Ubiquiti. All day, everyday. Get away from that consumer trash. Router: Switch: AP: Controller and remote access (optional, can also be run on a Pi, server, VM):
I was looking to replace my setup. This was very helpful! Thanks
