According to sources speaking with Kotaku, Microsoft is still working on two new consoles for 2020, with the term ‘Project Scarlett’ referring to both the more powerful and cheaper boxes. According to one game developer, Lockhart (the cheaper console) is targeting PS4 Pro levels of graphical power but with a faster CPU in hopes of making 60 frames per second gameplay more common. This version of the next-gen Xbox will also have an SSD just like the more powerful version and of course, the PlayStation 5.

Pricing is still a bit of a mystery but so far, these two consoles are being described as successors to the Xbox One X and the Xbox One S, targeting both price and power brackets at once.

The Sony versus Microsoft console war will be very interesting for 2020.

I do wonder when/if we'll see Nintendo try to compete more directly with those two, as it's been awhile. I do like that there's a focus on interface for Nintendo (from the Wii remote, Wii U pad, and mobility of the Switch) But a console that has good GPU power, and is played with a normal controller connected to a TV would be interesting. The fact that a bunch of games that are PC - Playstation - Xbox with Nintendo left out (or coming in the following generation of hardware)

More directly on topic, I do wonder what we'll see from the new consoles, what resolution will they be able to render at well? I haven't followed how well they work at higher resolutions.

Nintendo has been very successful at releasing unique and innovative products. The same sort of success is unlikely if it tries to position itself as just a third console company battling head-to-head in the same market segment.

The thing that is mind boggling is that everyone wants to go disc less but then cheaps out by not including enough storage space to hold all the games...
I will always be preferential to  discs or cartridges  ....

The disc drive I feel is important and shouldn't go away since I can use a console to play my movie collection. So being able to load a 4K Blu-ray is what I want to be able to do with the PS5 or Project Scarlett.  It makes it easier to justify the cost and the console taking up an HDMI slot when it does more then one thing.

If people are smart, they won't buy disc-less version. Not if you like being able to sell/trade old games or be able to play them without the need for internet connection. Lots of young gamers can't afford to buy all the new games that come out, they have to rent them.
