I've modified my ini to look like his mostly and the game looks really good now though I've taken a FPS hit as a result, but its worth it at this point

Play this on my desktop with nvidia 3d, looks amazing, using most of the tweaks listed previously. Good frames, no lag ever. My alienware laptop with a low end 6870m plays the game perfectly on max settings as well...which is suprising since its half the performance of a desktop 5850.

It's in there, I promise. Amient Occlusion option is at the very top, then further down are the options for Ambient Occlusion.

read the entire list, I only have 1 option for ambient occlusion under common.  I dont have the other 2 settings that are supposed to be available.

at the very top, all I have are antialiasing options.

Thanks for the tweaks.

However, I'm having a pretty bad framerate issue. I'm using 2x 460 SC EEs. If I use a single card with these settings I'm getting 20-30fps.  If I enable SLI (with newest beta drivers) I get no improvement and it shows GPU 2 at 0% usage.

Does anyone know how to get SLI working properly?  Or is this something Bethesda needs to patch?

What were the major water ini tweaks? I'm having a hard time remember them all. My water and shoreline doens't look as good as gullerbacks

Still gotta diddle with the tweaks, obviously.  There is one sure way to make Skyrim look better, even without Bethesda's support-

What video card and driver version are you using?

It should look like this:

I am running the new beta drivers...  the first option that you have in compatibility is the only one that I have available.  And that one is in the common section.

Pretty sure just the 'iWaterMultiSamples=8' should do that.

Can you post a screenshot of roughly the same position or angle on the water?

(Note that water effects do vary quite a bit based on weather and time-of-day)

It should look like this:

Beta 285.79 does not look the same.  The whole top section is missing, is that only available when creating a custom profile for TESV.exe from the NVCP?  Now that it is defined in the beta, is that even possible?  I messed around with it for a while and couldn't get AO to work.  Too bad, it is such a nice effect.

Does the nVidia Control Panel let you directly set 'ambient occlusion' for Skyrim, then?  In the WHQL driver, the ambient occlusion value is 'disabled', which is why nVidia inspector is needed.

At this point, not directly without hacking/tweaking it, so I haven't bothered.

Its gotten to the point the last few days were I can't even keep track of all my changes and sources of all my INI changes and what works and what doesn't really do much. Can someone link or tell me what have been the ultra ini change settings for water in the game? I had to create a fresh INI and start over. Plus, I'm just spending to much optimizing the game, I'm hardly playing it so I'm taking a tweaking break for awhile and actually enjoying the game

Well, some folks swear by the config files made by this site:

http://donotargue.com/cfg-makers/skyrim/

(Combining with the external-to-the-game 'ambient occlusion' tweaks)

...on the other hand, I'm just using the changes outlined in the original post in this thread.  I've been keeping it up to date with tweaks I find that seem to help improve the experience in the game, so...just follow that, and you should be fine!

Specifically, it allows a game in window X64 to access 4GB of RAM instead of the default 2GB. This definitely helped with my random CTD issues, which seem to be texture/shadow related. Just use the program to select the Skyrim executable and open. It automatically saves an original copy - bonus!

Re:Making Skyrim look and run better 2011/11/13 21:46:33 (permalink)
That's...odd.  I don't remember Skyrim ever using more than about 1.5gb of ram, and usually it's closer to 500mb-700mb (I run two monitors, so usually have task manager up on my second monitor when I'm not doing anything more productive with it).

It's true that I'm kind of surprised they didn't compile the game with 'large address awareness' set, but the game really doesn't seem to need it.  I've certainly never seen it go high enough to run out of 2gb address space.

Yeah, I went after a REdguard guy in a cave and damn, I was having glitching that included casting spells which were basically "Frozen" in place, graphical glitches, horrendous frame rates going up and down, it was a mess....

if anyone wants to know where its happening. its inside the Alftand Cathedral a bit southwest of Winterhold.

I can confirm.  It only happens in dungeons or grids with water, even if it is in another room (game map doesn't care since it works in grids).  I had it happen a little bit when walking in shin-deep water, but when I started getting that flashy screen and broken water noise while in dungeons, I decided to roll back all of my tweaks (except 6000x1200 resolution) and see if it goes away.  Revocation of the .ini tweaks made the subtle changes that I incremented one or two at a time seem pretty important to the atmosphere of the game.

Also, using the added lines from DNA's .ini creator caused making quicksaves to hang for 20 seconds or so, where as before an F5 (or an F9) was instantaneous and occurred completely in the background with no hitch in gameplay.

Only that dungeon?  I'm using only the tweaks in the first post, and I've not seen anything like that, yet.

no it happened in quite a few areas, thats just the one I was in when I noticed it the worst,

Hey man, thank you very much for this.  Game looks a lot better for me on my 560 Ti.  I couldn't do the AA improvements like you did, but the rest all works great for me.  The mouse acceleration trick is epic.

Let me add:

2500k @ 4.8ghz
EVGA 560 Ti FPB @ 910mhz
8gb 1333mhz DDR3 Ram
1920x1200 Resolution

I did all the tweaks except SSAO and stuck with 4x AA with medium shadows.  Could definitely increase more, but I like to stay as close to 60fps as possible.

It sounds like SSAO is broken in the beta drivers - I'd strongly suggest rolling back to the WHQL to get it.  It REALLY improves image quality a LOT, and when set to 'performance' isn't actually as dreadful on framerate as the original recommendations.
