At least my 2P will stay Folding until they change it to 48 Cores then I will start Crunching on it.

I never understood why they make folding on older equipment such a waste, just let people put those old recycled machines to work doing research, who gives a damn if it takes them 4 days vs 1 day to complete a unit, the research they are doing hardly requires hourly updates. I was not a fan of losing the PS3 folders and this is another step in the wrong direction. Also you should make a new post announcing the strike rather then having it come together in here. Would grab more attention. I might switch my new streaming rig to crunching, folding @ Home seems to be too much about the monies then the science. edit: didnt like the fah name lol

Some of us have brand new rigs as well, lets not for that that as well. In the long run they really do not seem to care anymore, as far as I can tell they are also not showing a good future for the GTX 6xx and below Cards.

Maybe Bill, when they increase the number of cores needed, they cut the time to finish them too. So if they are bottom end AMD cpus, there is a chance they may not make deadline. A little overclock may fix that. ghz to ghz Intel chips fold better than AMD. So if their reference system is Intel????? It is too early to tell. We are waiting on a statement on the deadlines from PG. Then we will know exactly what will work.
If that happen then all I really can do is stop Folding on BigAdv and move over to Crunching. It cost a lot of money to Fold BigAdv and with low or no PPD per cost it will be time for me to pull out as well.

Crunching questions I'll answer in the Crunching sub-section as well as numerous others. I'll try to post the install for BOINC on Linux today if needed but I think we already have a sticky for that. FYI I have the folding appliance running with both the FAH setup from [H] as well as BOINC... set up was fairly easy but if you follow Berkley's just 'double click' on the file to install it's not going to work. The file needs to be made an executable. Linux reminds me of the DOS days and I do miss the command line.

Good Morning Folks!! I'm still mad!!! Looks like the Strike has begun for some folks... My 24 core rig is still folding, but next time I get a chance (probably later tonight) I'll look to switching it over to crunching for EVGA. Time to make the move!!! I used to use BOINC w/ Seti about 15 years ago, so maybe it won't take that long for me to figure it out. Peace out Stanford. Hope you ungrateful you-know-whats lose you cushy jobs... Morons!!

you'll need to start a cmd line in ubuntu... at the command line type - "chmod +x boinc_7.2.33_i686-pc-linux-gnu" without the quotes. This takes the .sh file and turns it into a magical .exe file. The whole installer thing didn't work for me. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Ubuntu

I don't think that's what your reading it's what you interpret your reading. The deal is they killed off the low end machines and the power to run the machines for a point isn't equal to the same you get when do bigadv. The complaint is there isn't a point to power ratio that is consistent. The next point is and I've posted this on the folding forum... when will PG require me to purchase a super computer just to be competitive or even contribute? As much as it boils down to it teams compete that's what we enjoy. We almost thrive on it. If you take the incentive away to compete by reducing the points and marginalizing equipment you really have said... you need steroids to be competitive since you puny little machines just won't cut it. [H] and specifically tear has hatched a plan to run the smp pool dry on Pande and do no bigadv folding. Put PG and FAH on notice. Lets just say people spend good money to be competitive and when that is ripped out from under them they take offense.

Horvat is correct, it would be a total waste of time. Tear sent an e-mail to Dr. Kasson and recommended that more do the same. I sent mine expressing my concerns and here is a link for you to do the same https://foldingforum.org/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=6 just use the pm button.

For me it's about the point's to kilowatt ratio. If they want the smp's worked, then revisit the point structure. There is no reasonable explanation as to why some smp's make 10k ppd and some make 25k on the same cpu when the same amount of electricity is used. Add to that, Gpu tasks now use some cpu power to run correctly and that further slows down smp. Fix the points! Carry that over to the ankle biter people who shelled out a lot to get into the bigs and now there told it's back to the minors. I'll stand with our 4P guys because it's the right thing to do imho.

The problem is FAH 'thinks' it's the only game in town. It's always been that way. I've no problem with that except other than I know better. I'm still eligible for bigadv but maybe in two years I won't be... or even a year from now possibly. Fine... but I'm not buying the hottest CRAY just for FAH. I can crunch... it's worthy enough and in my opinion at least they treat us as assets and not as dumb folders who owe them a paper to publish.

I was going to write my standard thinking about how PG could use more donor communication and positive motivation with change vs allowing the Bigadv hammer to always drop on donor heads. But then I was reminded that it (traditionally) has no impact as was the case the last time this happened. The bottom line is rather simple. If you go after Bigadv, this day always comes at some point. To avoid this day, you would have to avoid Bigadv, or be OK with a continual investment in even more expensive equipment each time this happens. I do feel that Folding as a choice is still just a relevant as ever and has just as much potential as other forms of DC to one-day amount to something. I know (from experience) that these changes are hard to take. But, I also feel that the people running F@H are also committed to doing the right things with this science. They just don't do very well at managing donor motivation and that is unfortunate every time things like this happen. If you believed in the science of Folding, then try to retain that hope and get past this event. Whatever you do, stay the course with the science somewhere whether Folding or Crunching.

It be just as simple for them to change a few things up on there end if regular SMP is falling behind or if they can't supply enough bigadv for the users it has now other than this. A few simple changes to each server would make everyone get SMP even on bigadv rigs. So its doesn't need to come to this. I still say we boycott to show them without us "the donors" there is no folding @ home. Without us no one there has a job to do. What would they do then?

Yea but without donors to buy said hardware to work these they have no job. There is no way they will ever raise the type money the donors spend each few years to do this work for them. Without us they are nothing and they need to wake up and smell the roses before its to late. If this goes forwarded as planed I will no longer be apart of fah as many others will move onto other things as well.
