Hello,

I just bought an EVGA GTX 1060 6GB video card, and I'd like to know if its temperature is too high.

When my computer is idle - without running any program - its temperature is around 45º. Dependind on the last PC activities, such as gaming or alike, it easily reachs 50-55º, even in idle mode, but after a while, the temp decreases a little bit.

NOTE: my computer case is currently very clean and well ventilated.

In the meantime, when I play a bit more complex 3D games (such as Black Mesa, which is the comteporary remake of Half-Life) the temperature stands around 82º - sometimes it varies to 83º or 81º (depending on the amount of details of the game's scene). The usage of the fan in this condition is around 60-70% (you can see the temp inside the game in the print-screen attached to this message).

It turns out that I have other video card that is a lot cooler than this. For this reason, I decided to search on the internet regarding this situation, and found some people saying that this specific video card that I bought is a bit more hot than the others (like my old GTX 750 Ti).

So, in the end, I'd like to know if these people are all right: Is this video card really hotter than the others? And of course, I also would like to know if my currently temperatures, as reported above, are considered normal. Or is it really too high?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks in advance,
Erico

Max allowed temp for the 1060 is 94c, so you're fine.

Haha.. that pic I thought was your pc room! Lol

Room temps. Get those fans working sooner. Dont let them shut off. I'd try to have them at least 30-50% at idle temps and a known load temp say 50-60c let them eat at 75-100%.. whatever you can handle.

See: Why does my EVGA graphics card run hot? in the EVGA FAQs

"'Graphics card temperatures typically range from 30°C to 40°C at idle and from 60°C to 85°C under load. Most high end video cards typically have a maximum temperature between 95°C-105°C, at which point the system will shut off to prevent damage. A video card is not considered to be overheating until it exceeds 90°c under load."

And pushing 293 FPS like in your screenshot can increase temps dramatically..Turn on Vertical Sync in your games or in the NVIDIA Control Panel (preferably) and see how it rolls.

You want to check the GPU Clock Speed at idle, and say what it is..If the card's not downclocking (for various reasons), that will cause elevated idle temps.

Although, that is a bit higher, it seems to be pretty normal, and I wouldn't be concerned. If you like, you can always replace the thermal paste to see if that helps decrease your temperatures. You can also adjust the  fan speeds in Precision XOC or X1 to allow for the card to cool a bit more.

Hello,

Firstly, I want to say a BIG THANK YOU for all the responses - they're very helpful and clarified my doubts.

Now I know that although theses temps are a bit higher than the usual (at least higher than my old GTX 750 Ti, as I said before), it doesn't mean that this is a [serious] problem I should worry about.

I still don't know how to make "the fan curve" to speed up the video card ventilation using the Precision X (or Afterburner) but will try to do this as soon as possible.

Turns out that my main goal right now is to make a performance/measurement test "as is" - i.e. I'd like to make a "raw test" without any kind of modifications and see how it is going on.

By the way, below is the screenshot of my memory clock, as suggested by bob16314. It was almost idle and marking something around 202.5 MHz. I was wondering if this is normal and made a rapid search on the web but couldn't find a straightforward answer. Will try to search this later again.

Cheers,
Erico

PS: english is not my first language (I'm brazilian), so forgive me if I made any grammatical mistake.

This would be normal as your card is at idle. The card will down clock itself to save power. :)

Fan curves/control in MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision..They both work pretty much the same way..There's more instructional videos on YouTube you can search for.

Also: How do I set a custom fan curve in Precision X OC?

The only thing I noticed in your second pic is that the graphics card's fans are not spinning, so of course idle temp isn't the lowest you can get.
Gaming with a temp lower than 60 C is ideal!

Re: Is the temperature of my EVGA 1060 6GB too high? 2019/04/17 21:39:35 (permalink)
albiss, you're all right!

The fan were not spinning, and I think this is strange. In my opinion it should be "on" by default, without the need of third party software to switch this.

By the way, the nVidia control panel doesn't have any options regarding fan control/configuration. At least, I didn't find any.

So, as suggested before, I decided to investigate these two softwares: Precision X1 & MSI Afterburner. I didn't have time to learn them yet, but it looked somewhat intuitive for me.

Thereafter, I turned on the fan speed and realized a reasonable decrease in idle temps: right now it's standing around 35-36º, and after a little computer work it jumps to 40º (which is much better than before).

Also, when I play "Black Mesa" -- a pretty heavy game that always had an average of 82ºC -- I'm getting 70-75º right now, which is pretty much OK, I think, considering that this game requires a high frame rate (something around 120-240 FPS).

In other games that are more lightweight, such as "Fallot: New Vegas", I had pretty low temps (something around 47-53º), even with high settings.

Last but not least, I have to thank you again. After all, it's never too much to thank people, hahah :)

Cheers,
Erico

You're very welcome Erico! :)

Beside the fans speed, there are other parameters to consider when you're aiming at low temps.
1) The FPS count: High FPS is very demanding so the card will heat accordingly;
2) Some of the games settings will make a big difference without having too much impact, visually speaking.
Have a look at the links below, you'll get some interesting info:

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/3z64ck/what_graphics_options_in_pc_games_are_the_most/

P.S. I find your English to be very good. I'm no expert either, I live in Quebec which is a French province in Canada.
We have in common that we both natively speak a Latin language! :)

Do you mind me asking where you found that information? I am currently researching max temp on this card and am curious.
