Assuming this is true, I'm really interested in the PCIe allocation of Z790 Classified.  Since the press release didn't mention PCIe 5.0 x8/x8 on Classy; I'm guessing slot "PE2" is PCie 3.0 x4, and "PE3" is PCIe 4.0 x8??? or are both x4 electrically?

Also, THANK YOU EVGA for including 10GBe on both boards!   Can't wait to see what these are capable of with the new I9

Classified is PE1 x16/x8 Gen5, PE2 (the x4 slot) is x4 Gen4, and PE3 x8 Gen 5.

I have 2 questions:
  1. Is there a 2-pin thermal header somewhere on the board this time (either KP or Classy or both)?
  2. Will there be an official bios update to use 13th Gen CPU on Z690, meaning it would be mostly pointless buying a Z790 if I already have a Z690?
Thanks.

To the first, yes, there's supposed to be one on both.  Haven't seen a picture yet of the boards sans heatsink so I can't confirm yet, but it's on the spec sheet I have.

To the second, yes, there will be an official BIOS at some point.  Until now, it's been an unreleased product.

Thank you Lee! Very happy see see the 2-pin thermal header finally!

It was clearly great to see some good news coming out from EVGA. Hopefully signaling business as usual! The new KP arrival and Vince sticking around for the Z790 MB design is indeed welcomed. I also noticed some talk about the wondering and if it's actually worth upgrading to a KP Z790 and by comparing or highlighting the very few visual differences made available to date. This initial wondering was perhaps that EVGA has been a bit light in not exactly furnishing a more 'deeper-dive' into all of the new KP generational improvements and head-to-head with their outgoing Z690 MB products?

I would also think that the pricing for the new KP Z790 will be close to the $1000 mark as the Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme is touted to be over $1200. With this kind of estimated halo MB pricing the thought prevails to what level will EVGA be ‘sales-pricing’ the Z690 (KP) to clearing their shelves and to attracting those who initially did not have the deep pockets to simply realizing or snagging a Kingpin. Economic times as we all know are tough and with really no end in sight! As to myself I am interested in making a jump to the new KP and upgrading away from my trusty Z690 Classified. Until then and for now, I however remain in anxiously awaiting that we all will very soon be rewarded with a deep-dive by EVGA into the new KP board design, its exact tech-details and advantages in tune with the 13th Gen Intel series.

I don't feel like the Extreme is a fair comparison for a price point.  For Extreme ASUS seems to have the kitchen sink approach, put as many bells and whistles on the thing and load the box full of extras.  I would likely put the KP more aligned with Apex on price point (a more overclocking focused board).  I'd assume EVGA come in at a similar range that they did for Z690, probably at $800.

Now if EVGA throws in an e-leash and the PCIe release stick with the Z790, then we're blowing way past that $1K price point.

I got a good laugh when I opened the box and saw the release stick.

But thank you, Lee. The thermal sensor header is a great addition.

Oh gee, I had come look see the EVGA Z790s will exist, I got no email what so ever, news wise. And to top it all off my Intel i9-12900k was deflective, trashed by a ASUS BIOS Z690 ROG Strix. from the start 90+ days ago. I am getting a brand new i9-12900k when instead I could of bought the i9-13900k for same price. Noticed the Dark also does get 10Gbps and 2.5Gbps NICs.

Love the OG Classified logo!

In my profile pic, I got a custom CPU waterblock done with the Classified Logo until the lights dimmed out. lol

I wonder since the Classified Socket is the same as the Kingpin, does that mean the AIOs with displays will be set sideways?

I have the Z690 Dark Kingpin, with a top mount EVGA CLC 280, my CLC display EVGA is sideways, aligned with the CPU socket just like it was vertical. WHY? is because it puts less strain on the tubes/hoses from, the radiator.

damnit, just bought and recived yesterday the Z690 dark, and I bought it so I could use it with 13th gen, since I saw the bios update. Now theres the Z790  I literally waited what I thought was long enough to see if they'd release a board like this or the Z690 Dark was going to service both (because sometimes they do that).

Do they do step up for motherboards? Would there be any real difference in the end?

Is there a release date for this?  Will we be able to pre order soon to be able to have them when we get our cpu's?  I don't want to be sitting on a 13900K cpu I receive on October 21st and be waiting for this board to become available.

What??   No more big yellow capacitors on the z790?  What will people complain about??

I liked the look of the caps...

Or, did they just cover them up?
They should be exposed for all to see

EVGA Z790 Motherboard Talk 2022/09/28 11:35:11 (permalink)
Indeed your comparative points with the Asus Apex MB are well taken. And thank you for your comments! Perhaps it was my initial ‘off-the-cuff’ thinking giving me a kitchen-sink attitude? For immediate starters I was hoping however to immediately noticing more NVME slots.  Even if currently there are no PCIe Gen 5.0 SSDs out there to take advantage of the Gen 5 slots. Perhaps I was expecting for the new KP in boasting more noticeable 'real changes' in different architectural layout aesthetics. This is how I first met my blond girlfriend and who had assets which were highly visible and she could walk that walk. Then I did not enquire further about her other qualities.

As to pricing it’s a tough one and I would think that even EVGA corporate already had long marketing and debating discussions on this subject given their current in-house situation and the unfortunate lingering US economic condition. Vince is apparently now looking for new and additional work assignments with others! But despite that and from what we already know MB prices for the upcoming generation have essentially gone way overboard. At the recent local computer show I heard people talk about whether or not in upgrading from their Z690 to a new Z790 MB or getting a new more powerful GPU instead and which would give them a bigger bang for the buck? What can I say…never a dull moment. Greetings from Stehekin, WA far away from the madding crowd.

i just looked at the side by side between z690 and z790 chipsets...and it looks like the only differences chipset wise...

-z790 has 1 more usb 3.2 port
-z690 supports optane memory (no mention of it on the z790 page)

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/218833/intel-z690-chipset/specifications.html
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/229721/intel-z790-chipset/specifications.html

how this translates in to board features i cannot say, as each board maker makes their own choices based on these. i'm sure the magic is in the bios and how the cpu features are best supported by the vrm etc

yea the chipset diff is a meme. BUT WHERE IS OPTANE... 905P 380GB NVME USER HERE.. NOOOO. the new beta bios improves memory overclocking even on mdie, and adds more features, like power down disabled, tvb(BORKED), the only thing borked on that bios on the 12900KS is RING ratio, cant set it above 47 ecores off for some reason. everything else seems working as expected . i can boot 7400 now.. could never do that prev bios (MDIE 6600 GSKILL KIT)

did you test a die on 1.15 or older yet? i've been working w rma apex this week and with 0082 (unpatched avx ucode) i managed north of 8000 https://hwbot.org/submission/5086857_

i spent hours wrestling with getting 8000 to even post last night with avx ucode patched in tho, very frustrating. my green sticks also have this weird "feature" where they just 55 at stock/cmos reset. i need to post in w m die, set 5600 + 1.65ish, post in power off, swap to a die then i can play. weird af

not sure if it's this apex or what, but i'm thinking about giving the dark a try tonight. if you have any bios recs for a die from your experience i'd appreciate it!

This is something we're looking into.

OMG, yes please bring this to lite Lee!  Can we also add it to x570, or perhaps some new AM5 boards peas!

I've been asking for this since the z390 dark, as well as supporting the z390 dark with the new eleet x1 and that's still not happened.

What I've been looking for is a board that will allow for 128GBs RAM running at 6000MT/s+
As it is, almost no one even tests 32GB sticks, let alone 4. This keeps me from jumping onto a DDR5 platform.

As it is, almost no one even tests 32GB sticks, let alone 4. This keeps me from jumping onto a DDR5 platform.

from what i've seen it sounds like 2DPC boards will clock mem significantly higher on z790. can't say you'll get that w 32GB dimms but there are 64GB (2x32) a die kits available if you know where to look. a die is what you want.

damnit, just bought and recived yesterday the Z690 dark, and I bought it so I could use it with 13th gen, since I saw the bios update. Now theres the Z790  I literally waited what I thought was long enough to see if they'd release a board like this or the Z690 Dark was going to service both (because sometimes they do that).

Do they do step up for motherboards? Would there be any real difference in the end?

Technically yes. Realistically no.

Do you mind sharing a bit more about higher memory clocks with 2DPC and z790? Do you have any links that elaborate a bit more on this as it's the first I've heard of it? Every article i've seen on z790 only references the slight upgrade in pci-e. I'm debating picking up the z690 kingpin while it is still available at a discount for a new 13th gen build and 64GB of ram is my minimum so this seems pretty important. Not that DDR5 64GB ram kits are clocked very high at the moment anyways so maybe it's a moot point?

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this article from tomshardware that raptor lake may require z790 for a 350w turbo mode?

It'd be pretty disappointing to see the z690 kingpin/classified kneecapped by this?

*edit*
can't post links, google "Intel's Raptor Lake Reportedly Has 350W Turbo Mode, But Only on New Motherboards" for the article.
