    Performance drop 5-50%.
Imagine if our processors suddenly start to work 30% slower after some Windows Update.
I think that would be revolution.
    From Nehalem to Skylake-X.
Same as I need to revert Update if I want SBZxR to work.
Can you imagine such mix of Rage and Rabies.
New Skylake-X i9-7900X same as Ryzen 1800X. Hahahahahaaaaaa but price still same 1000$.

More and more news show up... all of them before few hours.
Looks like fix will drop performance because some hardware bug.

Serious Intel CPU design flaw may require a Windows patch, but probably won't affect gaming performance

The Intel fix (patch) is probably temporary while another solution is being researched by Intel. As mentioned AMD processors such as EPYC are not affected.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

Not only Epyc, Ryzen and Threadripper are not affected as well, AMD Processors.
Long time Intel cook something in their basement.
    1151 V3, can you imagine.
Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake would be able to work on same motherboards but they want new chipsets.
Did they bring Gen4 PCI-E 4.0? No. Cosmetic changes and new mobos, advartised with new DDR4 compatible kits.
Only difference higher frequency, and higher timmings + RGB.

Long time people suspect that at least 1/4 of Intels performance are tricks with Microsoft and softwares from most famous companieslook. Cinebench, CPU-Z Benchmark and Real Benech sell more processors then real need. To many models on market, small period between them..... Small time for optimize better and recognize problems.

It’s at multiple sources the performance drop is going to happen. The only speculation is how much performance we are going to lose.

Where the issue resides Intel cannot fix it with a microcode fix. It is going to have to be resolved at the OS level. Soooo we are kind of going to get bent over without any lube. Some of us will be forced to upgrade especially on aging hardware. The result will be people going with AMD.

I don't see a massive exodus of Intel users going to AMD quite yet. I am already using Threadripper.

Well... It’s a good thing gpus do all the heavy lifting nowadays :-)

I wonder if it has any impact on mining rigs...

yes, anything running Intel silicon and the only bandaid fix they think would be possible is at the OS level.

From other side from AMD arrive completely different news.
AM4 will be used until 2020. That mean at least 3 generation of processors will be compatible with these motherboards.
Maybe even up to 50% upgrade in total.
    Damn lack of OC.

    Intel's CEO sold his stocks.
It will be tragedy if performance of Intel Skylake-X drop for 20-30%.
People will sue Intel. I don't see other way to finish this.
People want to sue Apple because they only little slower older models.
But if they sold processors with bugs to people this will not finish good for them.
Only 15-20% Performance, even 10% completely change picture of their processor compare to AMD.
Now you need to pay 600$ more for same performance as 1950X.

I'm only not sure is it bug fixable complately, or bug could be fixed only with performance loss as news say.
Cooperation between IT companies is similar to cooperation between services during September 11 2001 and before.
That's tragic what they do and how much they charge. I see use as donkeys, all of us.
Special beople who hurry to replace Z270 1151 V2 with Z370 1151 V3 and processors are not compatible, even RAM manufactuterers launch different memory modules and motherboards vendors sabotage some of them with BIOS.
That's not Z270 QVL memory, you need new kit.... Hahahaa

Back in the day with the Pentium bug...I remember Intel replacing all the Pentium CPU's after the bug was found and fixed.  This just may be the straw that breaks the camel's back.  Depends on how Intel decides to handle the situation...

Intel and Microsoft should be able to reduce the performance drop to single digits.
If they can’t then I guess AMD will have another good year in the CPU department.

    The Intelpocalypse?!

I bet the performance decrease isn't as serve as it's being hyped up. I bet this does negligible damage to Intel's market share. I bet for gaming this has no noticeable impact.

I sure as hell not going to go AMD. Abu Dhabi not welcome!

Re: Intel: Serious Vulnerability Speculation in all CPUs Wednesday, January 03, 2018 10:05 PM (permalink)
This is newest statement by Intel before 2h

    Performance Issue is Workload-Dependent

    https://www.theverge.com/...rity-flaw-bug-response

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/3245508/components-processors/intel-responds-to-the-cpu-kernel-bug.html

We only could hope to performance hit is less than 5%.
If slow down is bigger example 10% Intel will hide that information at all cost.
Can you imagine, people buy 400-500$ worth watercooling to increase voltage from 1200V to 1350V and get 10-20% performance.
10% is difference bettween OC on default voltage and cheap cooler and pumping up voltage for higher OC.
    And now what...

One thing is sure, We have no Choice.
Intel is our best processor manufacturer of two who could satisfied enthusiasts and overclockers.
Now one year after Ryzen and Threadripper Intel is again Boss. With less advantage than before but no one is capable to react for 6 months after competition launch product developed several years.
With Z390 and LGA3xxx AMD will not be able to fight again.
These generations now are modified after Intel figure out that AMD have best processors ever.
Now we need to wait on completely new generation and answer from Intel on AMD Ryzen-Threadripper story.
Because AMD not allow OC, almost locked multi. Overclocking Bus Speed give same performance increase.
Only chance for users is to wait newer generations and Install in AM4 and with BIOS update will work.

Good part of reason why I like more X99 and X299 is because they are longer on market, similar to AMD, not so long but at least more than mainstream. In mainstream now you Install one generation and that's it. But difference is far better OC than AMD.
Everyone are satisfied how Haswell-E and Broadwell-E OC, that's back in time of SB and SB-E.

    Yes and goodbuy OC.
I'm not sure how all processors are stable on Turbo if they can't work 200MHz higher clock.
Everything under 4.3-4.5GHz have serious impact on gaming performance no matter on core number. Don't even to talk about less than 4.0GHz.
I don't say that CPU should work on 5.0GHz with 4 cores. But something between, 6-8-10 cores on 4.5GHz is best.

Quite a few people over at Guru3d.com have already received the patch and claim that there is no performance hit that they can find, using Cinebench and some other benchmarks.  Supposedly the patch mainly effects Virtual machine.  Time will tell...but so far, news is encouraging...

Patching info starts on page 8 of the thread

Back in the day with the Pentium bug...I remember Intel replacing all the Pentium CPU's after the bug was found and fixed.  This just may be the straw that breaks the camel's back.  Depends on how Intel decides to handle the situation...

If you're talking about the Floating Point bug in the 2'nd Generation Pentiums (P75, P90, P100) it was a very obscure bug and a lot of us didn't bother going through the hoops to take advantage of Intel's offer to replace the bad CPUs.

Microsoft HAS announced it will be patching Windows 7 8 and 8.1 to fix the issue - but the applicable patch won't be "auto-updated" as soon as the Windows 10 version.
That info is in one of the links in one of the articles posted in the original post.

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

    Confirmed fake news.

For consumer desktop user the Windows 10 fix increases performance. This is exactly why you should rarely believe tech hype on the internet.
