Dear Admin, please pass this IMPORTANT recommendation to the software (or firmware) development team. I have an RTX 2080 Ultra, which I bought because of the promise of much more silent fans. Before buying it, I read various users complaining that they can often hear a clicking noise from the fans. I thought it'd be some unlucky users who got a slightly faulty fan. BUT I have the same problem (it's very annoying) and the reason is not faulty fans. Fans are turning off when the GPU temperature is below 55 degrees Celsius. That's a great feature, but the problem is that the software checks for the temperature very frequently and turns off the fans immediately once the temperature drops below 55 degrees. It just so happens that with a room temperature of about 22 degrees, during standard (non gaming) tasks my card's GPU seems to oscillate almost always between 54 and 55 degrees. So what happens is that the software turns off the fans at 54 degrees, half a second later the temperature is 55 degrees, fans turn on, then again half a second later the temperature is 54 degrees, fans turn off. And this creates a really annoying clicking noise, PLUS i wonder how long the fan engine life will be when you constantly turn the fans on and off. See the attached video.

There is a VERY EASY solution to eliminate this problem: turn OFF the fans only when the temperature is below 55 degrees for AT LEAST 5 SECONDS. Turn the ON when the temperature is 55 degrees or more for AT LEAST 5 SECONDS. That way, you won't have any issue as the one described above, and you won't have any problem also with temperature control (5 seconds is not enough to overheat the GPU).

PLEASE do pass this suggestion as a CRITICAL one. It is an extremely annoying issue and although you may believe it's very rare, it just so happens that 54-55 degrees is the most common temperature for the GPU at standard room temperature levels (as I mentioned, many users complained about this issue on the web). I cannot attach a video to this post, but if you contact me by email i can send you a video of this issue happening regularly.

Thank you,

Giacomo

Yes it is very annoying. i think this is something EVGA can fix only with a BIOS Update?

Yeah this really needs to be looked at. I have the same issue, they constantly turn off and on when not in use. Spinning up for half a second just to run back off seems pointless. click click click.... click click click....

I just set a custom fan curve for now

The word for this is called hysteresis and you are correct this would be a good change.

However, your GPU should not be idling that hot, something is likely keeping your GPU idle clock high. Use GPU-Z to see what the idle frequency is, should be like 300 MHz or so. If it's higher you need to find the culprit (most often you have set the card to max performance in the NV control panel). Doing a driver reinstall with DDU is often the easiest way to fix.

Also check Task Manager to see if there's a background program unnecessarily putting load on the GPU.

Just wanna chime in on this too, my new 2080 is currently Idling at 54-55 and I'm hearing the fans constantly spin up and down which in my quiet room is driving me crazy!

GPU is sitting at 300mhz and 405mhz Mem clock

I installed precision to try and change the curve but it wont actually apply the curve I setup or even the default curves, the fan slider also just drags the entire precision window around which from using it in the past isn't what its supposed to do.

new installed windows 10 here. idle temps at 55-56. fans constantly spin up (with click/rattling) then turn off a second later.

@EVGA: Can one of you guys forward this to the dev team or can somebody confirm this is a thing that is beeing worked on or ill have to return my card :(

EVGA does have a youtube channel.
I would strongly suggest watching "Ask EVGA".
If they do not address an issue feel free to comment in here to get a propper discourse going.:

What cases are people using, and how are your fans set up in your case?

55 seems awefully high for any case that has decent airflow.

Yep I have a 2080 TI and it did the same thing.. Idles right at the point of fan spin up. With a little bit of moding I slapped on  G12 bracket and Corsair H100i V2 ... End of fan issue and it idles at 32c and maxes out at 59c during heavy game play.

Now those are some nice hybrid cooling temps.

Curious so I will ask, what mods was done to get this fit?  Zip ties? lol

Are there any AIO brackets compatible for these GPUs?  Afaik, Corsair and NZXT make GPU brackets for their AIOs but not sure if they are compatible with the 20xx series as of yet.

On NZXT's website it says the g12 bracket is compatible with the RTX cards but if you go on a website like Amazon and search up the g12 bracket and their description it doesn't say anything about the RTX cards..... I want to buy one but I don't want to buy the old version of the g12 bracket

I believe the old version was the G10 iirc and the new one is the G12 unless they've made a new revision of it but yeah, you have to be careful with that.  I would probably get a hold of NZXT and see what they say to be sure.

Modding the card with aio cooler is no option for me.
CAN EVGA confirm this is an Issue and confirm that i have to RMA the card OR can i fix it by myself, PLEASE!

Also: i would like to replace the card at the reseller but im afraid it will have the clicking too ... is there a certain batch already sent out to the resellers wich have this issue fixed?

Thanks

Precision X1 software allows the user to adjust both the "Hysteresis" & the "Fan Speed Update Period" in ms (refresh rate)

So if your fan is going Off & On all the time: adjust one or the other

Temperature Hysteresis: will make the system wait till the "set number" in degrees C, has been passed before the fan will slow (mentioned earlier bynsomethingc00l)

Fan Speed Update Period: is the number of seconds between the info being updated  1 second = 1000 ms

Use the Large Carrots to move the bottom of the screen Left or Right to get to the screen as seen above

Select "Automatic Control" (check box) - when checked it looks illuminated as in the photo above

Adjust Fan Speed Update Period or Temperature Hysteresis to get the desired result

Click the Save button (near lower right of screen) & then click Apply

well I can tell you that it is saggy wires touching the fan blades  the clicking noise

RMA it for EVGA has the fix for it now  unless you are good with your hands and a Q-tip with silicone

I took the AIO pump cold plate, and loosened up the screws that attach it to the pump housing just enough to get it onto the bracket and then tightened the screws down. Its a nice and tight fit onto the G12 bracket. I loosened the 4 screws holding the Stock cooler down onto the Gpu. Kept the backplate and Memory/Vrm plate in place. Used the AMD brackets that came with the G12 kit since the Nvidia brackets do not line up with the Gpu holes. Added the AMD brackets to the card, then used the AMD CPU standoffs that came with the Corsair AIO to hold the g12 bracket and Pump housing onto the brackets I installed on the card.. The thumb screws that are supposed to be used are too wide and rub against the AIO pump housing. the Amd standoffs fit perfect and rub just a lil against the housing, but the mounting is flush and TIM is spread evenly across the GPU die.  Not the prettiest solution but its works great.

Did EVGA made this fix ? To both fans ? Because the two fans make noise on my card and the wires don't seem to touch the blades at all.

I think this problem is a fan issue. Probably bearing? If the fan blade touches the line, it should not only start, but also continue to make a clicking sound The fan blades and wires do not touch. Setting the zero fan hold time is also a problem, but more importantly, the noise itself is a problem when the fan stops and then operates. I wonder how many people are experiencing this problem. And I wonder if the problem is solved if I replace it.

It's not my video, but it's like 100%.

Well i did RMA my card because of this fan noise and received a replacement card that have the exact same issue. Both fans are concerned on these cards. Someone mentioned in the " GeForce RTX 2080 XC Ultra, fan issues and base temperature" thread that he had this problem too and after getting another card, the issue was gone.
I really think that EVGA should clearly make a statement on this issue and not letting people send their card back, spending expensive shipping costs to receive a replacement card that is affected too… There's probably a good number of faulty cards .

Maybe they will correct the issue in factory for newly crafted cards but how to be sure about that and when will that happen ?

Till now nobody in the EVGA staff told anything about this...
