thanks.. it took me about two hours to do it.. no i didnt polish since that leaves a film. i just worked at it with 500, 1000, 2000 then 4000 and finished it with 8000 grit ultra fine sand paper till my arm bout fell off.  i got the 4 and 8k paper from a hoby store. i kept polishing it till i had a very smooth mirror finish.  there are still micro scratches in it but they dont show up unless i used the flash. otherwise its rather shiny.  hehe

Using polish fills the micro abrasions with it and leaves a layer of film on the CPU. Both reduce heat transfer.

Thanks CraptacularOne I will have to test this for my self.
I lapped my TRUE and the performance improved but I polished it in my final step.
So I will have to rid my self of the polish an see what happens.
    Thanks again!

Acetone works wonders.  Q-tips/cotton ball and nail polish remover will take anything off.  be careful with that stuff though... it HURTS in your eyes, and not good to inhale either.  When you see your cotton getting dirty, you know your getting lots of crap off the metal

wow, your just laying em in aren't ya??

in my defense:  I just installed my waterblock, and both were lapped to 2000 grit.  I also just installed my thermal probe.  The thermal probe reads within 1-2°C of the bios cpu temp.

    ****, I didn't even know 8000grit existed!

I would've bought that instead. I did this with 2000grit:

You can get the same results with polishing compound.  I have done that, but again, totally not necessary for anything beyond 800-1000 grit.

Hey all, this is not meant to hurt feelings or belittle anyone's hard work, but "shiny" is not the only goal to lapping. Flatness is the real key to proper heat transfer and I can say with my experience using the lapping guides inside these forums, it is not easily obtainable. My last attempt to lap my i7 peaked my curiosity as to how flat was it? It's shiny and reflective but.....So I took it to work and used and optical flat to measure it and it was not even close! It's extremely difficult to maintain equal pressure during the lapping process which translates into a surface with concave/convex characteristics.....What I did to resolve this was to use a lapping plate at work which is essentially a "certified" flat surface made of granite/quartz.....After many hours of hard work and numb fingers I was able to produce a visible "flat pattern" of apprx. 80% coverage of the cpu face and my TRUE....it was not as shiny as the photos in this thread, but it was truly flat and that is more important for heat transfer. Again my intention is not to disrespect but to share knowledge.....

thats the first rule of thumb, find a flat surface or a really thick glass table, it will still be an improvement since you will still help reduce hight spots.

agreed.  so what was your technique for using equal pressure.  Glass is usually the DIY choice for lapping, so would would you suggest?  do you have a pic of your chip?

Does his head look flat to you?

I have gotten the same mirror polish on 2000 grit, but  i needed polishing compound to do it.  I am not sure how much better it performs, but for a north bridge chip, it didn't make a difference for me.

agreed. so what was your technique for using equal pressure. Glass is usually the DIY choice for lapping, so would would you suggest? do you have a pic of your chip?

    nateman_doo,

I don't have a pic...One of the problems with lapping is that you can't get the paper to be one with the glass, there will always be an air gap, and other imperfections due to the paper itself. What I did was use the lapping process as described in these forums, BUT after it was "shiny" I took it to work and held it (right handed) with my thumb on one end, and middle finger on the other end with my index finger on the middle of the chip and lapped it in a back and forth motion, with short strokes and medium down force on a certified flat inspection granite/quartz plate. It took a long time and numbed my fingers, but it was worth it. As I worked the metal you could slowly see the "contact" pattern develop, until after a while a contact pattern developed from the center outwards in both directions until apprx. 85% of the surface was "flat." I figured this was good enough considering the position of the cores on the chip.
