atfrico Ok found some videos that can guide you to OCing your CPU and motherboard, PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, if your PC does not boot, shut down and reset CMOS. Also, make sure you have the proper CPU cooling for your CPU to handle the OC, if you are using the stock heatsink, i'll suggest you invest in a better heatsink to keep your CPU cooler. Here are some videos, try the first one first since it is easier to understand if not go to the 2nd one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV-J2TU08Qk&app=desktop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pL_n5l4gWU&app=desktop Good luck and post your results
To be honest, he shouldn't need to overclock anything to keep from dropping to 30FPS. OP, have you turned off Gsync (and Vsync if it is on either in game settings or in the Nvidia Control panel)? It should be listed under the Nvidia Control Panel settings somewhere (I don't have a Gsync monitor so I can't say where it is exactly).
+1 The OP shouldn't be overclocking anything until he gets his system stable at stock speeds.

What you should be doing right now... #1 Update your motherboard bios to the latest version. #2 Manually set your memory frequency, timings & voltage to the correct speeds. #3 Retest opening hwinfo again.

If you think hwinfo is the problem you could just use gpu-z/cpu-z to check and see if your gpu/cpu is clocking up to their rated speeds while gaming.

RAM timing are correct. 15-15-15-35. At least, that's what they say on the back of the sticks and that's what the bios is stating too. Motherboard has been updated to the latest version. Running Nvidia driver 368.39.

Is 1.2v the correct voltage for your ram?

Instead of criticizing my help why don't you be more helpful to the OP? you think turning off Gsync would help? I want to see how much juice he can take out of the hardware he has, is that bad? I don't think so. As far as motherboard goes, ASUS, as well as many other motherboards out there, have the nag of choosing the wrong settings in the bios whether is memory, system, CPU, GPU wise. Showing how to overclock, IMO, is the best way to educate someone who does not know about what type of hardware the user has. To the OP, if you are willing to spend more money in another board, you can go ahead, but i don't want you to give up on it that easy. I just want you to watch the video and educate yourself a bit, i am going to do more research on it. Take pics of the video for every setting so you can go back to the bios and start setting the proper configuration.

T hose who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. @Sajin, the pink one. @atfrico I see what you mean, of course. However I do not think my CPU is truly the problem (although, I may be wrong.) I was getting much better performance with my 980 Ti with no overclocking, and it doesn't seem right that an i5-6600K would be hampering a 1080's performance THAT much.

It could be the CPU? might be, why? because the GPU is running past 1500hz and GDDR5x (memory running faster than a regular GDDR5) that is why i want you to OC your CPU to see if the extra Ghz helps. To the OP, i always push my hardware to a certain limit where it keeps me happy to know is fast enough meet my needs and demands. From the CPU, to the memory, SSD, GPU, even LAN, as long as i am able to tweak them, it is something worth doing, specially if you are constantly upgrading every 3 years or so

Your CPU speed is fine, it shows 3.9Mhz, all i can think of is you need to set up the GPU speed to GEN 3, do not let the motherboard choose Auto. It should be in the Advanced Tab. Could it be the PSU or GPU?

CPU temps get up to about 40-45c (sometimes a bit higher, depends). I will set the GPU speed. Edit: set to Gen3... no changes. :/ Edit2: I loaded up Witcher 3 (everything maxed) and it was getting 70+ fps. what is going on D:

If you have a friend near by where you can test your 1080 in his machine and run the same games you have will determine if it is a faulty GPU or not, just a FYI.

I must have hit a nerve. You do know I was offering help to the OP? It was based on what I've read of problems people have had when they forgot that they had a Gsync monitor with Gsync/Vsync turned on. Just you you are fully cognizant, I was not criticizing you as a person, yet I was criticizing (just in my own mind until now) your judgement in overclocking an already unstable system. If that's something you don't want to come to terms with, well, I can live with that

For the record, what are the specs on the Wife's PC? How did the test(s) go using the Wife's PC? Did you run DDU to clean out the old drivers in safe mode, reboot, install the latest Nvidia drivers, reboot, and then test? Or did you just put the card in without cleaning the drivers out? (that can be a problem!) Oh, and what version of Nvidia drivers are you using?

I have the Maximus 8 hero rog motherboard and same CPU and as you do, the only difference is I have 8 GB of 2133MHz system RAM (2x4 GB modules in blue slots), from my research the Maximus 8 Hero does not like 2133MHz ram in 4GB modules populating all four DIMMS, even Corsair do not recommend 16 GB 2133MHz kits, you can check on Corsair memory finder, the Maximus 8 Hero manual also does not dupport 2133MHz 16 GB kits. I am on the 1701 BIOS, I leave everything at default settings on the Maximus 8 hero ROG and only disable the HD Audio. I have just installed a GTX 1080 Founders Edition and I have not tested any games out yet, got some things to do, but your tomb raider framerate looks on the low side but it depends on what settings you have chosen, one review shows rise of the tomb raider with very high quality settings and DirectX 12 @ 2560x1440 showing minimum framerate 66 and average framerate 102. EDIT: Just wanted to add 368.39 driver installed with all GeForce software installed too, and including GeForce Experience, I use CPUID's HWMonitor version 1.28 to check CPU and GPU temps and speed.

Ram is in 2x8 GB config. I will try pulling one and see if it makes any difference. I am on driver version 368.39. Not at home to test it, but could the Steam FPS overlay be causing extreme performance dips at all? I know that the MSI Afterburner overlay was causing some issues, could it potentially be the same thing here? The reason I ask is that Witcher 3 was running at fairly optimal fps BUT I have it through GOG not Steam. Does anyone else have either Hitman (2016) or Rise of the Tomb Raider that they could test and see what the performance numbers are? I want to rule out if it's the GPU (hopefully it's not, and it appears not to be).
