You are protecting the contacts from condensation which is from moisture in the air. you displace that air with Vaseline in the socket. When you seal off the socket, there is still moist air in that socket (albeit small amounts-but its there regardless)
Always put that stuff in the socket. cleans up will with a hair dryer, just up-end the board and heat. most will melt off. and acetone on Q-Tipps will help with the rest.

I tried the eraser, and the thing I didn't like was it did not all stick together like it went on. tends to stick to the motherboard in area's but I only tried it once, maybe twice. and it was a while ago.

that stuff sticks, it's just the molding part. i put it on and took it off fairly easy, but i had it stacked on to high for my block...i got a bit overly excited..lol so have to redo, but trying to work it out in between my foam cutouts. so maybe a little around the cpu socket, then over the top....still testing ideas to see what works. i a new idea...pm'd it...

Yessiree. I'm surprised you nate or john havn't put up even anything tonight. I have had one interesting moment benching tonight though. I was ready to get so mad and sad at the same time, but i got lucky, or my mobo is one tough SOB. The board is a DFI LP UT-P35-T2R. It has onbaord power and reset switches. So after a failed oc, i go to turn it off. I pushed the power button, and felt a SHOCK. I thought, "Oh sh*t, please don't let this happen to me." I was so freakin nervous that i killed the board from the shock. But luckily it booted up just fine right afterwards when i hit the power again. Yay me! *knocks on wood*

ehh. Nothing worth posting right now. Just tinkering with settings. Voltages, speed, ect. trying to figure out the best configs for benches still. I did hit 1150mhz consistently and 1175mhz a couple times with my Dominators (ddr2) at stock timings 5-5-5-15, with just a bit of voltage over stock. Used 2.15v and 2.19v compared to stock 2.1v. Trying to hit 1200mhz without too many volts is a PITA. I have a quick question though. What is considered acceptable for benching for ddr2 volts, with a fan blowing on the sticks? Gonna turn in for the night though. I'm beat from a long week.

I usually just use manufacturer specs....probably somewhere around 2.1v on ddr2?
