Ok, i've been saving up, possibly for a SS. For me, is it worth it? Remember, i'm a senior in hs, so i still have 5 or so years of not paying the electric bill.

Also, sdumper said he tunes his for -40*C @ 300w. I have always wondered something about this. If i put a lesser load on it, say 150w, will the temp be lower (ex. -70*C), or does it only go to -40*C, but it can stay there up to 300w?

I'm just thinking, because my dice place is far away, and with phase i could be up and benching immediately. I would think this would be nice for me especially now during the school year, because i have alot less time to bench.

Thanks Reg. I'm pretty sure my main rig (i7) would get some SS love if i got one.

Wow that would be so awesome.

I may look at a SS but idk.. It's a lot of $$$ for what it is. Also I don't know my college plans yet looking at Air Force/Navy Academies so I doubt a rig like mine would be at home there.

Yea, i'm definitely not gonna jump on it or anything; gonna think about it for a good long time. One major positive i would think is at college i don't know if they would like dice/ln2 in the dorms.

@Reggie: How much for the Biostar TPower i45? I have really wanted that board, but cant find it for a decent price anywhere. It is a sick board btw. Can get crazy fsb, like 700+ if you have the ram to go with it.

Currently looking for a cheap AC unit on Craigslist, I figured now would be as good as time as ever with summer just ending. I only have $80, hopefully I'll be able to score something. I know we have a igloo cooler in our garage, not sure if my dad will let me hack it up though .

Have any of you tried running your chillers outside during the winter? I was wondering if they still worked, I know that the gases they use rely on certain ambient temperatures in order for the gas to change phases properly. I was curious to see if they still worked, It would be nice to be able to get evap that much colder.

I'm going to give it a shot, or at least rig something up to help continuously maintain -20C with 2 fermi's at 100% load.  Now I have to wait a little bit between bench runs to get the chiller back up.  Before with my 2 295's it was bench at will....not with the heat of the fermi's.  It's amazing they don't melt the pci-e slot, LOL!

No its a very bad idea to run a refrigeration system at that low of a condensing temperature.
typically units that are run in the winter use a "head pressure control" essentially it just shuts off the condensor fan to allow the condensing temperature/pressure to rise to an acceptable level.

The problem is that at low temp,  lower pressure is required for the refrigerant to condense from vapor into the liquid,
this in turn will massively reduce the cooling capacity of a unit, as you have now decreased the actual amount of refrigerant traveling through the metering device(captube,txv, etc...)

this will result in poor metering,reduced capacity, and possibly overheating of the compressor, remember the compressor is cooled by the returning evaporated refrigerant vapor, decrease that and BAD things happen.

and NO, running the unit outside in the winter will not yield lower temperatures, because ...again you have reduced the liquid refrigerant pressure.

I hope I explained this properly, I haven't had my cup of coffee yet and am kinda sleepy still.
