walleye, power supply dying maybe?

Have not checked that PSU as it was only a back up and was using only on the one 480 in question.
But I have since ordered a Antec TQP 1200, Because I did have to use a second psu for only 2x480's.
It makes more sense to me that the "pops" were from psu and not 480. But on visual inspection nothing looked bad or burnt.
But I also have not hooked that psu up to anything either for fear of frying something.
Going to check out puts later this week.

My vcore is so high, its at like 1.5750  for what kinda OC and what are temps.

Interesting. What PSU is it? Did you smell the PSU? Also, did you just look through a fan hole on the PSU to see if it was burnt?

You could put the psu hooked up to just a few things (to keep it from burning out from no load), jump it, and see if it starts smelling like it is burning. Maybe just hook it up to some fans for the load, so if it does burn up, it would olny take a few fans with it instead of a mobo or gpu. Just an idea...

I broke everything down the other day and found a little rust. Just like you, John...I guess I'll experiment more with insulation. Good thing for plasti-dip!

So then, tonight, I put one of my 295's back on air. I was thinking of rma'ing this card since I still have some output quality issues. I spoke about it before and thought it was the sli bridge, but no, it still has low resolution "look" to it.  Not the low res of a performance vantage run, but a little worse than that when running vantage.  the color is not fully saturated.  It happens only in 3d applications.  Desktop is fine.  I don't really know how to explain it...maybe I'll take a pic later.

So I benched it a little, and on air, it still beats iride's best single GTX 480 on water with heavy overclocks. (He currently has the best 480 single card run, followed closely by awalleye)

It's a killer bench card, but if I ever sold it, I'm not sure gamers would like the screen quality. Evga said they could get me a dualie replacement, but it would take 2-3 weeks. I don't care about the down time.
What do you guys think...rma it, or keep it.

damn...i think i may plastic dip the front of my board tonight.

oh yeah....that rust is hella crazy.....im thinking it means the eraser is not fully sticking to the bracket and air is getting in...speculation of course.

also...i bought me a laptop...nothing fancy though...just needed something better than my old nc8430

Q:
do an advanced rma...that way you keep your card till the new one arrives.

How you guys get so much rust??   even a slight coating of Vaseline will help with that.
Q, I would suggest calling anyone you know at EVGA and seeing if they know of any hamburger 295's laying around, or you will end up getting a single PCB back.

The rust looks like it comes from the hold down bracket screws.  It wipes right off the hold down bracket.  And as long as you have plastidip or eraser on the mobo, you should have no problem.  I even wiped the rust off the plasti-dip coating.

Like John said....it's somehow air is getting in and around the bracket.  I tried eraser and PJ, but that turned out to be a real mess.  PJ breaks down the eraser into a messy goo.

I'm thinking some real think layers of foam stacked up on the area surrounding the socket (like Nate does), and some thin strips of foam between the socket and the bracket.  I saw that on xs forum...on of the top guys does it...forget who.  You have to be precise though...air has a funny way of finding it's way through sloppiness, lol!

i got the gateway nv7915u. the i3-330m model and since this thing is upgradeable from the cpu point of view...i grabbed it. ran a few benchmarks with it and grabbed a few trophies. so far i like it. will switch out the the 2.13 ghz cpu for the 2.4 or 2.5 with turbo boost...later

I don't mind cleaning the bracket.  Because the eraser was mixed with the pj, I just wiped it off once I heated up with the hair dryer.  It was the remaining goo around the socket that needed the hands of a surgeon to remove.
