Did this on normal water. RAM was at 9-9-9-28 with a 2:8. This was with Windows 7 and no tweaks. Im sure I could do a lot better if I did it with XP SP2 and some good tweaks.

This was done on plain water too

Im not sure how much disabling HT helps. I did find out that disabling 2 cores HURTS the max overclock that Ive been able to get.

My first 03 run ever.... Worth like .6 Hardware points, oh well. Wish I could submit my x2 275 scores in the x1 295 section

That is probably because your voltages are to high, vtt, qpi pll even v-core etc. There is no reason you should not be able to at least equal your 4 core overclock. It's the same cpu but using half of its resources or is it 1/4 (ht off). Speculation of course.

Disabling two cores does some funky stuff to the CPU. It just doesnt want to clock any better than when I have 4 cores enabled on it. I dont know why and one can only speculate, but most all of the WR's and top scores ive seen use 4 cores, so its definitely not just me.

No argument on 4 cores vs  8 (ht on) but from above statement I thought you meant you can not clock as high with 2 as with 4 cores.

I cant. My CPU wants more and more VTT to go any higher than ~245 Bclk with an x15 multiplier (im sure enough Vcore and cooling I could do it with x21). I had to push +500mv through it to get to 245, and I was only using one stick of RAM to minimize stress on the IMC.

Going down to two cores felt like overclocking an entirely different, less capable, chip.

Re:Get It Colder......2 2010/02/28 22:13:55 (permalink)
I know for me reducing my multiplier makes for a lot of head aches. Vtt is pretty much for uncore. My experience shows me you can muscle a chip to a certain point of over clock. After that you really have to tweak precisely, which could mean that a voltage that you needed for say 4.4 might have to be lower for say 4.6 cause that said voltage was actually compensating for something else either a voltage that was to low or maybe even canceling some kind of electrical noise. One thing for sure temperature can have a big affect, even if your cpu is well with in the "safe zone".  Try messing with clock skew 500ps or higher, sure will not hurt anything. Those really high frequencies get very picky of all settings being just right. One of the many reasons sub zero cooling works better is cold means less molecule movement = less frequency to interfere with other things. There is absolute zero but as far as I know there is no absolute highest temp cause you can't go slower than nothing but you can always go faster.  Just babbling sorry. Good luck.

Well its the electrons that determine temp. So Im assuming the maximum tempeture is when those start moving at the speed of light.

Why would the speed of light be the limit?  Tachyons travel faster than light. So I do not think the speed of light is the cap. Just saying.

they sure do...cause all these people benching new products...lol

im stuck till hopefully tomorrow...i jacked up my bios and waiting for a new bios chip. i couldn'y see doing an rma for that. i dont want to be taking my board apart/cleaning it then shipping it off then waiting for them to send it back. i just ordered up some extra bios chips...will get me an eprom later down the line for safety reasons.

The electrons do travel at around the speed of light in a good conductor.

It's how hard they are pushed (voltage) through a restriction (resistance) which causes heat, not how fast they travel.

They always travel the same speed in the same conductor/circuit in the same conditions.  Increasing the CPU speed does not cause the electrons to move faster.  Increasing the CPU speed just increases the frequency of the logical on-off cycle.  Higher frequency equals more cycles per given time.  All the while, the electricity never changes speed to a noticeable extent.  Increasing CPU frequency changes how fast the electricity is allowed to pulsate between different electrical potentials, not how fast the electricity moves.

EDIT:  Alright, the speed of electricity does change.  I didn't want to confuse you and say it NEVER changes.  It just doesn't change in this application by a noticeable amount.  The speed of electricity is different through different conductors and different depending on the temperature of the conductor, the density of the conductor, and other atmospheric conditions -- including atmospheric pressure to a small extent.  But these changes in electrical speed are not what you are referring to.

In the application we are referring to (CPU), the change in electrical speed is negligible.

So how can we control the CPU's heat (other than cooling)?   We have no control over the CPU's internal resistance and the conductors utilized.  The only thing we really have control over (other than cooling) is the CPU voltage, CPU speed, and CPU load.  More voltage will create more heat because it will push the electrons harder through the resistance and therefore increase the current.  Higher CPU speed will make heat go up also -- even if the voltage is left the same.  The transistors in the CPU which act as logical switches require some electricity just for their operation.  So, the transistor will consume a bit more power than what it is providing for the load.  The faster the the transistor frequency, the more often it will need voltage provided to it to excite it to logical on state as needed. And by the same token, as CPU load is increased, more transistors will be switching back and forth between logical on and off states (instead of a certain percent just idling along at a logical off state) since more computational power will be needed and therefore more power will be consumed and more heat produced.

wow look at the luck I wasnt going to bench his rig but look what I found contest. I guess ill have to go for atleast one run just so im eligible for the random prize

Yea np ill just take out some of my extra ln2 and ,,,,,,,,,,, no im not going for anysort of real score I might just stick my 5850 in it though and clock the hell out of that. But as for his build too risky I cant afford to buy it, my 1 rig is hard enough to keep up with.

lol i know how you feel i just build a rig for my mate (and paid for it) with a i3 530 chip in it on an evga FTW motherboard. this rig has some insane potential but he wont even get a decent air cooler for it for me to get a lil extra juice out of it........ i managed to convince him to get the COGAGE TRUE but he is still reluctant :S something about shortening the lifespan from a bazillion years or something....... i guess ill just OC the crap out iof it while he is asleep :P
