The pricing between the 980 FTW and the 980 Classified literally makes no sense for how close they are in terms of specs.

to top it off, there's probably a full cover water block already available

so what's the difference to the Classified except the GPU base clock?
another cooler, PCB? there is a price deference of 120$.

smaller cooler / pcb, i think 2 less phases, and one less bios,  thats about it,
may be a hot running card , but I will get one and let ya know how they clock

I dont get it what is different? 13mhz? pay $10 for EVGA to OC 13Mhz for me?
 
This is a reference board? Works with reference EK blocks?

For some reason, I though GTX 970 FTW will be ok for 4K but not really - deeps down the 20s, as benchmarks show. Looks like 4K requires you to spend $ for top of the line card... why are 15% suddenly making so much difference?
 
I hope I can get that card before new year... I wanna order it from your EU store but it's not there.... :(

I thought the classified and HC 980 were already overpriced but this kind of just solidifies that stance.  I opted to go for 970 FTW's to SLI but unfortunately my step-up came back with some serious coil whine.

 
The Classified is a complete waste of card and money if you don't use it with LN2. It is specifically designed for that and to take that abuse. A FTW card would likely not take the voltage that you'd want to give it under LN2 and to attempt to break records. You are buying the monster PCB that can pretty much take any voltage you can throw at it when you buy the Classified. You certainly aren't paying $120 for a one bin clock increase out of the box.

A lot. Classifieds usually have 14 power phases as opposed to the 6 that the FTW has. Classy has an inch taller PCB to make room for said power phases. Haven't paid attention to the voltage saga with the 980 Classified specifically, but usually the Classified has some level of voltage control beyond what non-Classified cards have either with an EVBot or the Classy Voltage Tool. As I mentioned above, all of this is geared for LN2 use at extreme voltages and clocks. A Classy is a waste if not under LN2. They charge a pretty good chunk of change for a card built to take that abuse over a normal card.
 
I have owned Classifieds in the past, and they aren't for me. Too big and I don't use them like they're intended, so it's pretty much just a waste.
 
This 980 FTW is a pretty sweet looking card, but I really don't like how they used old designs and went with the Kepler style outputs. One thing that really appealed to me was the 3 display ports on the reference 900 designs. Of course, I realize this is just because of my particular setup and for every one of us that likes the new style there is likely one that prefers the old style as well.
