As the title states, I'm folding on my 970 SSC and am having some issues with NOISE. The left fan is running full tilt, the right fan is not spinning at all (might make one or two revolutions then stops and shudders, repeat). Included is a screenshot. RPMs read 0, and you can see where as I adjust the fan speed with the override it does not change. Any idea if this is a flaw in the card? I don't recall it doing this before.... but it was always in the floor where I couldn't see the fans (now it's up above my desk in my line of sight).

Sounds like the fan controller on the card has a problem.

Like a hardware or a firmware problem? Wondering if a different bios could be flashed to this puppy to overwrite the default fan curves and spin both at say, 50% or 75% at all times.

Hardware issue. Yep, you could definitely flash a different bios to the card with an adjusted default curve, but it won't help with your current issue.

man your quick with that answer.. when it likely that cheap power logic fan failed as I point out several times here before . I guess you scrap your cards before checking that out ? lol,, junk a 300 buck card over a 155 buck fan [ well that 2 fan wired and evga is 25- 45 bucks ] see that circuitry in the fan motor housing ? that tends to be what fails and with 2 cards wired together the bad fan affects the good one wired to it and the is what controls the speeds from off the cards senders the card tells the fan its getting hot and the fan adjusts that speed 99% of the time here for me its just been replace the fan and alls back to good if the cars bad then you will be seeing more then the fan at issue I think that card uses a power logic 87mm dual set up ? should be some new one at ebay example https://www.ebay.com/p/87mm-VGA-Fan-PLA09215B12H-2-Pin-for-NVIDIA-EVGA-Gtx750ti-Video-Card-From-USA/1938999432?iid=142901152852 https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=evga+gtx+970+fan&_sacat=80151 just check your #'s example PLA09215D12H, PLA09215B12H - powerlogic fan #'s

Changing the fans wouldn't be a bad idea. Hopefully that will resolve the issue. If changing the fans on the card doesn't fix the problem then the fan controller on the card is busted.

bad thing is finding easy to get at a fair price fans [new] its not like ebay is so trustworthy 35$ +/- aint bad for dual matched stock new fans . I had a few cards and been those powerlogic 's lucky for me I got old / junk cards to pull good fans out of . may not of been the correct match and had to super glue one or 2 in place but all's well after , so far has not been the card at fault may look at dual fans from like asus or sapphire or whoevers that match up to your size with out going too small in mm or too big in mm where its hitting the shroud hole . next thing is the fans mounting arms to match the cooler screw holes [where that superglue comes in to play ] .. if you go with a non evga speced fan/fans I'm just from my experience with them that one fan went bad and the sister fan is working its butt off to maintain any proper temps . now one thing I don't know is if being a dual fan and wired together if they got to be matched or if you got another different say 87mm or whatever fan and wired it in the ''bad'' fan place if that would work out or not . never had need to test that yet if you had one fan from any card [known working ] you could unplug the fans from the board and plug it in there place on the cards fan header and monitor the behavior [just let it hang loose off to the side for testing with out it able to fly off and bang around ..lol..] if the fan works normal stopped or slow at cold temps and rev's up as temps climb as they normally should then its a easy guess its the stock fans or one of the 2 went bad I just hate to see a guy think he got to junk a nice 300 card over a 15 buck fan and spend another 200-500 bucks on a new one over that . thing is having fans around to test with or risk the new fans to give a try , that's all your call my experience with the power logic's just try new fans lot cheaper try the a new card and if it don't work out you stll getting a new card anyway that's still a slight risk good luck

well I got my fans out, and was able to match them up. 42mm hole spacing - PLA09215B12H. Now to just find a shipper that's not located in china. I really don't want to wait 6-12 weeks for a pair of fans for this card (there's folding to be done and Lan parties to be had!).

that's a trick now look at fans from say msi sapphire ,ect.. may have the same from a usa guy ? fans I used did not matck on the mounting or size I used https://www.amazon.com/IC-2000-Rubber-Toughened-1oz-Adhesive-Glue/dp/B002N507I0 to glue them in instead of screws [ that's mean stuff sets slow so you got good time to work withit like lining things up spot on ] I got one NVidia card and one powercolor like that over a year old as still going none of the fans used were correct in size or mounting legs , but now cool and spin up/down as new as with correct fans that were in them me . I don't care I make it work satisfactory or junk it /junk box for what comes up next to give a try / parts . I try all with what means I have available at hand first . buy something new is last resort / no choice just comes down to how much you feel comfortable to be able to do or want to do and time/money your willing to put in to something .

Found a guy in Jersey who had them in stock. Should be here Monday. Part number, connector pins, blade diameter and mounting hole brackets all matched up (checked with digital calipers because I want a direct fit).

I hope it works out then . the fans has so far been the trick for me on other cards weather using the correct ones or not , but maybe as well for you or something else like the card is bad in some way . just what you posted I like the chances of the fans . like anything it works out or it don't I think trhe price of a fans is worth the try over just junking the card right off best of luck

Thanks. I wouldn’t junk the card if the fans don’t fix it. It’s just loud, not unusable. :). I might cut out the fans and swap their locations so the RPM can be detected on the other line (if like you said the replacement doesn’t do the trick or unless there is something wrong with the card itself).

also those aftermarket air coolers are reasonable priced as well like something from here for example https://www.newegg.com/VGA-Cooling/SubCategory/ID-576 I could be wrong but from what I seen here the fans like the powerlogics are a smart fan they get the temp reading from the card and they do the speed or whatnot ? anyway so far with them fans the card s had fan issues just replacing them with known working fans did the trick and those cards work well as normal now ? trhat don't mean it still could be something deeper in the card .. its just a try this try that and hope for the best easy cheap out come and save a card thing

Dr. Death, today you have earned your PhD for as far as I'm concerned. You were spot on, in that you were exactly - 100% - correct in the fan being the problem. The replacement from Jersey via ebay arrived today, and after the installation I now can see the RPMs of the fans, adjust the duty cycle of the fans, and most importantly, the card under full load is no longer a jet engine (as both spin together - the way I assume God intended). Thank you sir, for your most helpful posting. For $33 I have a quiet house again when the folding month rolls around, and for this my wife (and my own peace of mind) thanks you. Cheers!
