1920x1080 is like the lowest of high end gaming.

Now 2560x1600 is where its at.

+1 to that.
1920 x 1200 was nice but not even a sniff of what its like now with 2560 x 1600 real estate.

I can second this. I have a 2560x1440 resolution and really would have  a hard time going back to 1920x1080.

damn guys stop bashing on 1920X1080

i just spent 450 dollars on that asus 3d 120hz monitor bundled with 3d vision and i want to think that it will be awesome lol. then again i am coming from a viewsonic a97f crt.

I agree. It is hard to go back to 1920x1080 after gaming at 2560x1600.

for the Folders and Seti'ers the GTX 590 ii the better bet, you could make your own Fastra III with 6 of these in an EVGA SR1 or 2 or 4x SLI Classified,, 4x GTX 590 will fold more than 4x GTX 580 lol.
8x 512 Cuda cores versus 4x Cuda Cores, go figure..
More on how they did Fastra II here with 1 GTX 275 for display and 6 GTX 295 for rendering:
http://fastra2.ua.ac.be/

Reso wise I want a real monitor reso and not a cloth reso, 1920 x 1200 and up for me.

Aspect Ratio 16:10 = WIN, as where Aspect Ratio 16:9 = phail, that being a cloth Aspect Ratio imo, as being that, Cinema's use cloths to display their images on, as where real monitors do not.

Spot on... this is why im stepping-up my 580 to a 590, purely for folding, not for the gaming side of things. I just found out you cant use EVGA bucks on step-ups as they are already considered a promotion offer lol. That means ill have to buy that 560 Ti I was thinking of buying too :/ Meh, more folding goodness. Might even get a rank B in Mafia 2 benchmarking too atlast...

Anyways, in regards to teh OP, I wouldnt bother chasing tech just enjoy what you have. I'm stepping-up as its a nice way to keep the original purchase price of your first card so you dont lose value on teh card within the first 90 days.

I don't need a bigger monitor, I have my Acer 1920 x1080 23 inch, and I have my 46 inch LCD TV at 1920x1080 so I dont want to see it bigger, I like power and I don't give a dam about monitors.  I don't want to use glasses for now. thank you very much, also provably next month i will buy another gtx 580 SC

For 1920x1080 you dont need any more than one 6950 2GB unlocked to 6970. Anything beyond that is just waste of money unless you buy a 30" and use 2560x1600 that is smaller than 1920x1080 on a 46" so i fail to se the point of size you try to make unless you only use the TV as intended, for TV and the 23" for gaming where the 1920x180 looks the best.

Off topic... but you seriously gave the Govt 20K in a free loan? You could have invested that instead of letting the Govt keep it.

Yes, it is unusual.  I had some unexpected (large) credits.  But varriable income sucks.  No matter what you do you always give the IRS a loan.

I have thought of doing something like that via a 762. But if these cards are based on the GF110, then putting them right next to each other could result in the load temps being too high. One option might be to remove the fan shrouds and fans and then have two large Delta fans behind or on top of the cards pushing air over them to keep the cards cool.

well since the GX2 580's aka GTX 590's are gonna be using single PCB's , why not water cool the thingsmake them single slot this way, I have seen that most builders here do use water cooling to make such cards sinlge slot right, even so I reckon they will do fine as cooling goes, like how NVDIIA used Vapor Chamber cooling for thier GTX 570 and 580 cards, these do fine even if 4 of them are opeprating side by side, take the GTX 480 and 470 for example even these work fine side by side and they don't even have vapor chambers!

So nah I'd not worry about temps man, GPU's like PCB's are made to withstand quite high temps under large loads.

I wnet for am EVGA GTX 580 SC for project G34, this one is plenty for my needs, hereby a GTX 590 won't be needed, I prefer to wait for GTX 680 if I'd want more Cuda Cores and more GPU rendering capabillites if I need more Cuda Cores the GTX 480's are fine in the system they are in now.

Hmm Id' go for an EVGA GTX 570 over them ATi cards, the reason is more features are usable, better Multi GPU scaling if willing to go SLI and they fold way better also 1x GTX 570 does like 17.000PPD as where a HD 6950 @ 6970 does about 4700 PPD maybe a bit more but alot less than a 8800 GT would even fold for heh.

Even in games a GTX 570 beats a HD 6870 in mostly every game, nah I have been healed from ATi cards, they just lack the needed rendering power to do advanced Tesselation and other apps to where Cuda & PhysX are needed.

But everyone has their own views on what VGA brand they prefer, I just have my reasons to use NVDIA cards over that of ATi cards,  that leading to amuch more complete feature package, better drivers, better with Folding@Home which I do plan on doing with Project G34 and better 1 to 2 GPU scaling.

Like you would have your reasons to use ATi over NVIDIA branded cards, it's not a crime to hide what you prefer, we all have our differences this way

As aspect ratios go I prefer 16:10 over 16:9 I want a real monitor reso and not a cloth, aslo 16:10 allows the gamer have amuch more native aspect ratio in the game he or she plays over 16:9, you also see more, 1920 x 1200 is aslo a much larger reso than 1920 x 1080, since the height is 1200Pixels over 1080Pixels, this would also bring the GPU you are using to abetter purpose.

2560 x 1600 remains the best reso if you want the best image quality.

I would love to do that but unfortunately all the promo shots have a DVI connector in the second slot, so it's impossible to make the card single slot without cutting this off and voiding your warranty (and risking shorts). I have already ranted at length about how it makes no sense to compromise air cooling (smaller rear vent) and make single slot impossible like this, instead of just using mini-DVI ports (the kind MacBooks have) and shipping a couple of dongles for DVI-2 and DVI-3. The tiny extra expense is hardly a big deal on an ultra-high-end card.

hmm I think you are confused with the GX2 560 Ti the card EVGA showed during a press conference ;)

here the EVGA GX2 560 Ti which I call it for now:

By looking at the rear view of this card, you can clearly see that the Dual GF114-250-A1 GPU's have been placed vertically instead of horrizontally like they are placed on the GTX 560 Ti VGA's, I can tell by the layout of the rear traces of the GPU's themselves

Here that early GTX 590 Engineering Sample from December 2010:

But yeah I see what you mean, there are traces on this early Engineering sample for the same Dual DVI setup as that EVGA GX2 560 To Development Board, okay you got a point.

btw Zotac also planned something similar with Dual GTX 460 GPU's

The layout of the GPUs isn't the issue. They're all single PCB cards with the potential to be single slot. However every card you posted has at least one DVI stacked connector protruding into the second slot area, which makes all of them impossible to single-slot without cutting off connectors (and voiding your warranty).

Re:GTX 590 2011/02/09 03:52:13 (permalink)
I know that, but it's still possible to use 4 of them side by side for a folding rig, WOLF_TEAM_LEADER does tht with 4 GTX 295 RE's they do fine actually, this way he has 8x 240 Cuda cores insead of 4x 240 cores if he'd be using 4 GTX 285's ;)

With Folding@Home, the amount of Cua Cores is more important than the amount of ram  ram bus a GPU has.

Even that the GTX 590 is a Dual Slot unit, there are ways of getting 7 of these ina PC as well.

Just use these Extenden PCI-E x16 to PCI-E x16 extension connectors:

Do some case modding so you can fit 7 GTX 590's:

And done.

So even that they are Dual Slot, with sollutions like them Belgians used for FastraII like the ones I just showed, you can still create your home bred Cuda based supercomputer with GTX 590's and a like

That means this card replace the 1000 only unit card with gimped and underclocked GF110 GPU.
2x8 pin seams more like what one other late rumor say, EVGA do a dual GF110 in limited edition (1000 unit) and then replace it with the official nvidia dual GF114 card.

+1   ......for general use, unless you poop money, and are a graphical artist etc, the price point for the extra 640x520 of "real estate" is very high IMHO. Not to mention the uselessness of the "extra real estate" for 1080P blu-ray/3DBR applications.

While there is definitely a use for much higher resolutions, casual use of films/gaming/entertainment is not one of them. All depends on what your primary intention of utilization is.
